.KEY MESSAGES...

- Strong spring system this evening through Wednesday. Main
  concerns are the combination of strong winds and heavy wet
  snow.
- Widespread 20 to 25 mph winds with gusts up to 35 to 45 mph
  expected across Upper Michigan. Gusts as high as 50 to 55 mph
  possible along Lake Superior and in the Keweenaw.
- Widespread 6-12 inches expected. Higher amounts in excess of
  1-2 feet expected across the high terrain of Marquette and
  Baraga Counties into Thursday morning.
- Temperatures will trend to above normal by next weekend.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...

Forecast remains on track for the phasing of a Northern Plains
shortwave with an Intermountain West shortwave later today.  The
latter has since moved into the Central Plains per latest radar
mosaic/RAP analysis. And, phasing is progged to commence in the Tue
18Z-Wed 00Z time frame. Through Tue 12Z, forecast soundings for
all of the forecast area remain dry in the lower levels.
However, there is an increase in moisture across southern
Menominee County by Tue 13Z with a rapid increase by Tue 14Z.
Currently, light radar returns are drifting across central
Wisconsin with ground-based obs reporting snow and rain in the
Fox Valley, which correlates well with a surge in isentropic
ascent across the southern tier of Upper Michigan counties
progged for Tue 14-16Z. Isentropic ascent will then overspread
the central and northern portions of Upper Michigan through the
afternoon. Initially, ptype at onset of event could be in the
form of rain across the south and east. Therefore, any snow
accumulations through the short term period will be minimal and
confined to the far west and central portions of the forecast
area.

.LONG TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...

There is good model agreement through this week and into the weekend
with the track of the impactful winter storm Tuesday through
Wednesday solidifying. A closed mid level low develops over northern
IL tonight and slowly meanders east along the southern MI state line
through Wednesday before dipping through OH Wednesday night. This
deepening low with a trough over the northwestern pacific deepening
amplifies ridging over the Rockies that moves east setting up an
omega pattern across the U.S. Thursday. This pattern shifts east
pushing the closed low toward New England this weekend. As the ridge
begins moving east into the Great Lakes Saturday, the deep western
trough takes on a negative tilt as it moves over the Rockies,
forming another closed low over the plains Sunday into early next
week. The majority of this discussion will focus on the mid week
winter storm.

While there are a few outliers yet, guidance is now really honing in
on a solution for this midweek low pressure system. Starting
tonight, the sfc low starts centered over southwestern Lower MI at
0z, then lifts north along Lake MI as it deepens. By Wednesday
morning, the low is expected to be centered somewhere between
Ludington and Muskegon MI. Where there still is some uncertainty is
how far it then retrogrades on Wednesday. The general consensus is
to follow along the western shores of Lake MI during the day, before
weakening and sliding southeast into the IN/OH Wednesday night. That
being said, the HRRR and GFS have the low further west into WI and
then IL before tracking east again Wednesday night. This leaves some
room for adjustments on exact locations of the heaviest snow,
however the general impacts and expected risks are gaining
confidence. The 4/1 12z ECMWF EFI values for snow are within 0.7-0.9
and SOT of 0-1 across much of the central and eastern UP,
highlighting the potential of anomalous snow accumulations.

Primary p-type after 8pm EDT is expected to be snow as temps
continue to fall beyond sunset. Model soundings show a deep moist
profile lifting north through the UP and eroding the lingering dry
low layer, supporting moderate to heavy snow showers increasing over
the central/east. Looking at the ensemble guidance (GEPS/GEFS/EPS),
probabilities of at least 6" of snow by 0Z Thursday are around 80-
90% for the central UP with around 60-80% over the east and 20-50%
over the west; lowest along the western shores of Upper MI. This is
a significant jump from last nights forecast package. When you look
at the 12" or greater probabilities, 50-70% over Marquette County
highlights the support of orographic lift and potentially some
marginal lake enhancement due to the northeast flow. Lake Superior
is hanging around or just below 2C and 850mb temps drop down to
around -4C to -7C Wednesday night into Thursday, which may yield
marginally cold enough delta-ts for lake enhancement.

Winds are expected to pick up on Wednesday, also highlighted by the
EFI with values around 0.8-0.95 and SOT of 0-1, marking the
strongest area over central UP. Gusts up to 35-45 mph are expected
on Wednesday across much of the UP as the pressure gradient tightens
on the backside of the deepening low. Some gusts as high as 50-55
mph are possible along Lake Superior, especially in the Keweenaw.

With model guidance finally coming to good acquirement on the sfc low
track, boosting QPF and highlighting significant snow accumulations
across the CWA, opted to upgrade all counties to Winter Storm
Warnings. See the latest Winter Weather Message for additional
details.

As the low weakens and moves east into New England late week,
northerly winds should gradually subside. Amplified ridging over the
Plains Thursday moves east into the Midwest this weekend, resulting
in a warming trend accompanied by clearing skies and dry weather.
Slight chance PoPs are reintroduced early next week as a deep trough
over the western U.S. lifts northeast into the Plains, forming
another closed low.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z WEDNESDAY/...

VFR conditions will prevail at all TAF sites through early
afternoon. At that point, a low pressure system will approach from
the mid-Mississippi Valley. As precipitation overspreads the TAF
sites after Tue 21Z, cigs will begin to deteriorate to MVFR.  And,
as the snow and winds intensify this evening, cigs and visibilities
will primarily become IFR/LIFR.  With heavy snow accumulation
through the night and winds gusting into the 32 to 36 knot range,
periods of LIFR will become more predominant in rapid visibility
drops.

Light east and northeasterly winds this morning will begin
intensifying ahead of a strong spring storm system lifting into the
region. This low deepens as it lifts along Lake Michigan,
retrogrades, then shifts east late week.

By Tuesday evening, gale force gusts are expected to develop across
most of the lake, quickly increasing to high end gales after
midnight. Storm force winds are expected to begin mixing down over
the west half of the lake around 5am EDT Wednesday, spreading
northeast across the lake through the day, save for the far western
zone. Winds are expected to return to primarily gales by Wednesday
evening with gales then continuing, as they gradually weaken,
overnight into Thursday. Winds will primarily be out of the
northeast and north, so the largest waves (upwards of 17 feet
significant waves) are expected along the southern lakeshores of
Lake Superior from the Porkies to Keweenaw Point and Big Bay to
Whitefish Point. The Gale Watch has been upgraded to a Storm Force
Wind Warning, save for LS162 where the Gale Watch was upgraded to a
Gale Warning.

Winds should fall below gales Thursday morning, dropping further
below 20 kts by Friday morning. These light winds look to persist
through the weekend.
