Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 1224 PM CST Wed Dec 18 2024 .KEY MESSAGES... - Accumulating snow begins overnight & continues into Thursday evening. - Accumulations of 3-6" are expected within the main band of snow, with the best chances north of Interstate 94. - A dry slot south of this band will limit amounts to around an inch or less, this is most likely across southern Minnesota but could potentially extend as far north as the Twin Cities metro & I-94 corridor of WI. && .UPDATE... Issued at 1222 PM CST Wed Dec 18 2024 Latest CAM guidance and HREF has suggested a southward shift in the axis of the heaviest precipitation and therefore snow amounts. For example, the HREF PMM suggests the heaviest snow will be along and to the north of the I-94 corridor. This axis of heaviest snow would likely be in the 5 to 7 inch range based upon expected snow ratios of 15:1 to 18:1. There is also a signal for some Fgen to move in along with the passage of this system which could result in period of heavier snowfall. The most likely timing of this heaviest snow would be in during the morning. This would be the early morning across western Minnesota to late morning in western Wisconsin with a morning rush timing looking likely for the Twin Cities metro. Much of the snow will be driven during the WAA phase of the event with winds on the back driven by CAA. The best chance for gusty winds will be across parts of western and southern Minnesota. So thankfully there is an offset between the heaviest snow and the highest winds. Blowing snow will still be a concern as the winds pick on Thursday, but it is not expected to approach blizzard conditions. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 253 AM CST Wed Dec 18 2024 Overall quiet weather today under a narrow region of Canadian high pressure. On and off flurries are likely with stratus sticking around through the day. Temperatures will be cooler with highs in the teens across west-central Minnesota and low 20s elsewhere. The forecast still remains consistent regarding a modified pacific low/clipper that will track through the northern plains & Upper Midwest late tonight through Thursday. Forcing is strong with this system with combined upper level lift from an approaching jetstreak & strong vorticity advection, while increasing frontogenesis north of the surface low supports the low & mid levels. This consistent forcing has been responsible with the models good handling on a well-defined swath of 3-6" of snow north of the surface low & tied nicely to the track of the 700 mb low. Probabilistic ensemble guidance continues paints the Advisory-level nature of this event well, with very high probabilities (70-90%) of >3" within the main band of snow, while the probabilities for amounts >6" are near 0%. A few high- resolution models are able to depict some 6-7" amounts within the main band of snow, but these would most likely be isolated. While we are near-certain that this band of snow will develop Thursday, uncertainties still exist with the track of the low, which brings where exactly this swath of 3-6" of snow will set up. Short term high- resolution models are also able to depict a dry slot likely developing along and south of the track of the surface low, which will greatly limit snowfall amounts to around an inch or less during the day. The ensemble guidance consensus keeps this dry slot & reduced snowfall across southern Minnesota, but enough short-term models bring it as far north as the Twin Cities metro & I-94 corridor in Wisconsin that it's still too early to say we have high confidence in where the heaviest band of snow will set up. In general, confidence is high for 3-6" of snow north of Interstate 94 across central Minnesota & US 8 in western Wisconsin, but still medium farther south towards the Twin Cities metro & Menomonie/Eau Claire region. Confidence is high that southern Minnesota will see little in the way of snowfall, with amounts generally around 1" or less. A Winter Weather Advisory will likely be issued later today once we have a better handle on the track of the surface e low & location of the dry slot/band of heaviest snow. The snow will begin around midnight across western Minnesota & spread eastwards through the overnight hours, with snow likely ongoing area-wide in time for the morning commute. Snowfall rates should generally remain on the order of 0.5" an less, but could approach 1" during the day within the center of the main swath of snow. The snowfall rates will begin tapering off during the afternoon, but impacts are still expected for the evening commute with most of the snowfall with this event having accumulated by then. Light snow could linger over eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin through the early evening, but should be totally out of the area by Thursday night. However, northwest winds will increase as the snow begins to end as a strong region of high pressure moves in behind the surface low. Gusts of 30-40 mph look possible, which will lead to impacts from blowing snow continuing into Thursday night after the snow ends. Colder air accompanies the Canadian high pressure with highs in the teens & lows in the single digits below/above zero in place for Friday & Saturday. Temperature return to seasonal values Sunday, & this warming trend continues through the end of the year with ensemble guidance continuing to show temperature anomalies of 10-15 degrees above normal developing by Christmas, and potentially even warmer than that to end the year. The next chance for precipitation looks likely late Sunday into Monday as models continue to develop a compact shortwave/upper level low that tracks over the Upper Midwest. Precipitation type still remains somewhat in question deepening on just how quickly we warm up, but at least some form of wintry precipitation looks likely. Other than that, the week looks dry heading into the Christmas holiday. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/... Issued at 1222 PM CST Wed Dec 18 2024 MVFR/VFR stratus deck will attempt to scatter out late this afternoon, resulting in a few hours of VFR before our incoming Clipper moves in. A combination of light to moderate snowfall, reduced visibilities, lowered ceilings, and gusty winds will be in play with this system. Onset will be around 04-06z across western MN, 06-08z in eastern MN, and 08-10z in west-central WI. Expect visibilities to quickly fall as the initial burst of snow moves in, and then gradually improve heading into late morning. On the flip side, cigs will be decreasing throughout Thursday and winds will increase and stay steady after peaking at 15 to 25 kt gusts. The highest snow amounts, and longest impacts from snow, will be along and north of the I-94 corridor. Light snow will taper off through the afternoon and early evening. KMSP...Onset of light snow most likely around 07z. About 1-2 hours of lighter snow with VFR vis will quickly fall to MVFR/IFR conditions by 12z. It is expected that the heaviest snow will last about 4-5 hours during that early morning timeframe. Snowfall rates of 1/2 to 3/4 inch per hour seem plausible for the worst conditions, with 1 inch per hour less likely. If we were to reach that 1 inch per hour rate, it would likely be for brief periods some time between 12-17z. A storm total swath of 3 to 6 inches of snow is likely across central Minnesota and western Wisconsin on Thursday, with the heaviest amounts looking most likely along and north of Interstate 94, possibly including northern and eastern portions of the Twin Cities metro. Locations south of Interstate 94 can expect total accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. In addition, gusty winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected during the day Thursday which may produce blowing snow conditions, reducing visibility and exacerbating hazardous travel conditions due to the falling snow.
