...WINTER STORM ARRIVES EARLY FRIDAY AND LINGERS INTO SATURDAY,
THEN DANGEROUSLY COLD AIR FOLLOWS INTO NEXT WEEK...

.Accumulating snow will make its way into southern and eastern
Minnesota early Friday morning. This will be a long duration 
event, with relatively low snowfall rates around 0.5 inches/hour 
or less. Forecast confidence remains low thus large ranges remain
in the snowfall forecasts. The best chances for 6 or more inches
of snow is generally east of I-35 and south of the Twin Cities
metro.

Northwest winds will increase Friday afternoon in Saturday,
gusting up to 40 mph in portions of southwestern MN. This will
lead to blowing snow and the potential for brief white out
conditions. Confidence is high that dangerously cold wind chills
will follow into Saturday night, with widespread values of -25 to
-40 likely through early next week. A Wind Chill Watch has been
issued for much of western and southern Minnesota.

...SNOW AMOUNTS TRENDING DOWN, BUT DANGEROUSLY COLD AIR REMAINS
ON TRACK FOR THIS WEEKEND INTO NEXT WEEK...

.Snow is moving in a bit slower, and as a result forecast
snowfall amounts have decreased across the region. This will be a
long duration event, with relatively low snowfall rates around
0.5 inches/hour or less. By Saturday night, the best chances for
6 or more total inches of snow remains east of I-35, south of the
Twin Cities metro, and south of I-94 in western Wisconsin.

Northwest winds will increase Friday afternoon in Saturday,
gusting near 35 mph in portions of southwestern MN. This will
lead to blowing snow and the potential for brief white out
conditions.

Confidence remains high that dangerously cold wind chills will
follow into Saturday night, with widespread values of -25 to -40 
likely through early next week. A Wind Chill Watch is in effect for
much of western and southern Minnesota.

ON TRACK FOR THIS WEEKEND INTO NEXT WEEK...

.Snow is moving in a bit slower, and as a result forecast
snowfall amounts have decreased across the region. This will be a
long duration event, with relatively low snowfall rates around
0.5 inches/hour or less. By Saturday night, the best chances for
6 or more total inches of snow remains east of I-35, well south 
of the Twin Cities metro, and south of I-94 in western Wisconsin.

Northwest winds will increase Friday afternoon in Saturday,
gusting near 35 mph in portions of southwestern MN. This will
lead to blowing snow and the potential for brief white out
conditions.

Confidence remains high that dangerously cold wind chills will
follow into Saturday night, with widespread values of -25 to -
40 likely through early next week. A Wind Chill Watch is in
effect for much of western and southern Minnesota.

will be less than an inch. Northwest wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph

especially across western and southern Minnesota.

Meanwhile, confidence remains high that dangerously cold wind 
chills will follow tonight, with widespread values of -25 to -40

Today will be the only truly quiet period for the upcoming forecast,
with a strong winter storm impacting a large portion of the central
United States beginning early Friday and lasting into the weekend.
Satellite imagery this morning shows what has been the case for the
last several days with low stratus evident across much of the MPX
CWA as higher clouds drift over Wisconsin. While we expect the base
of the clouds to raise higher off the surface, we will struggle to
see any kind of sun today as the aforementioned system begins to
move closer to the area. Temperatures this afternoon will vary
significantly from west to east with cold air already beginning to
surge southwards as the system advances, with highs in the single
digits in portions of western Minnesota to low 20s in the Twin
Cities to upper 20s in western Wisconsin.

The strong weather system moving into the area will begin to produce
snow showers across southern Minnesota by late tonight into early
Friday morning, with the setup this far north being an inverted
upper level trough as the main low pressure center closer to the
surface begins to form over the south/central plains. The trough
will sweep through the area over the course of the day Friday as the
surface low strengthens and moves towards the Great Lakes. High
resolution guidance continues to vary on the location of the low,
which is a significant factor in the snowfall forecast as the
difference between a central Lake Michigan location as portrayed by
the RAP and a location farther southeast is the difference between
warning/advisory level snow in portions of western Wisconsin and
southeastern Minnesota. Another significant factor that will depend
on the final location of the surface low is the strength of the
winds, with a significant pressure gradient likely causing
significant winds for a large portion of the area, and coupled with
any potential snowfall could result in significant blowing snow and
visibility reductions as well. Right now, the gradient of snowfall
accumulation potential stretches roughly from Redwood Falls to the
northeast through the Twin Cities and towards the north shore, with
the highest confidence in seeing accumulating snow of 4 or more
inches south and east of the Twin Cities and along I-94 in
Wisconsin. The areas with highest confidence in seeing enough snow
coupled with the winds to produce the greatest impacts have been
upgraded to a winter storm warning this morning, with the winter
storm watch expanded to include the Twin Cities as there is still a
significant amount of uncertainty based on the potential track of
the system. Travel hazards are likely as snow falls, mainly for
Friday evening's commute as snow ramps up with much of it falling
overnight into Saturday. For now, expect the main impact outside of
the areas that see snow to be the significantly colder temperatures
that will result from colder air surging southwards due to the
powerful system, with temperatures plummeting to single digits for
highs and below zero for lows with wind chills in the 20s to 40s
below zero by Sunday morning.

Colder temperatures will persist into next week but moderate
slightly towards the teens as our upper level flow becomes zonal and
further cold air struggles to reach this far south. Highs by midweek
in the teens with lows near zero are expected, with sunshine also
become a possibility as weak subsidence from upper level ridging
returns to the area. This will be our first look at significant
sunshine since before the Christmas holidays, as we've had a large
amount of cloud cover persisting over the area for the last few
weeks.

GOES visible satellite imagery reveals VFR conditions following
the departure of low stratus at all of the Minnesota terminals.
MVFR stratus, with even a few snowflakes mixed in, continues to
be the theme at RNH & EAU through midday. Visible satellite
shows another region of low stratus moving into northwestern
Minnesota, which may reach AXN & STC by late afternoon/early
evening. The primary focus in the second half of the TAF period
will be the arrival of accumulating snow and reduced visibility.
Latest hi-res guidance depicts a precipitation shield moving
into southern Minnesota late tonight, with light snow starting
first RWF & MKT, and then expanding northeast towards
MSP/RNH/EAU through the morning. Visibility near or below 2SM
will prevail following the arrival of sustained snowfall.
Northwest winds will turn north/northeasterly by Friday morning,
with an expected increase in intensity by midday and beyond.

KMSP...VFR through this afternoon and evening. Ceilings lower
tonight, but have opted to trend VFR until ~10z Friday, with the
arrival of light snow. Long duration light snow will drop
visibility at or below 2 miles through much of the second half
of the period. Winds turn slightly to our of the north by late
tonight, with gusts reaching 25-30 knots by midday onward.
