Well, it's cold, but if you are west of the Mississippi River, at
least you have sunny skies today. Looking at BUFKIT profiles, the
troposphere across our entire area is colder than the dendritic
growth zone (-12C to -18C). When this happens, it can be tough to
form clouds (too dry), but when you do, you're essentially making a
low level cirrus. Cloud cover in these conditions is always
difficult to predict, but as long as we have a profile cooler than
the DGZ, there is hope for more sun than clouds. We keep profiles
cooler than the DGZ through Tuesday morning, but even when we do see
some parts of the profile warm into the DGZ through the course of
the week, it's only that portion below 925mb that does so. So it may
end up being a tough week to make/maintain stratus, with much of our
cloud cover coming from any passing systems. There will be a couple
of weak system Tuesday night into Wednesday and again Thursday into
Thursday night. Both feature limited moisture, so neither will have
the potential for any sort of meaningful snow. The bulk of the PVA
with the first wave looks to go north of us, so we have a dry
forecast for that. Most models show the second wave diving south
across Iowa, but do spread some moisture into southern MN, so there
are some small PoPs in our southern area to cover that threat. At
either rate, our snow drought will continue for another week.
For temperatures, 0F still looks difficult to achieve through
Tuesday morning. We aren't expecting to see much of an airmass
change today, which means lows tonight will be similar to what we
saw Saturday night. Winds will be a little lighter tonight, so
apparent temperatures will not be quite as cold, though we have a
large enough footprint of minimum wind chills cooler than -35F
tonight to hoist another Wind Chill Warning for western MN. We do
start to warmup ever so slightly Monday night, with lows expected to
largely remain between 10 below and zero. These warmer temperatures
means the threat for getting Warning level wind chill values drops
considerably for Monday night into Tuesday morning, though wind
chills between 20 below and 30 below zero will still be a cold way
to start the short work/school week. That upper wave passing to our
north on Wednesday will bring in a slightly warmer airmass for
Wednesday, with highs possibly getting into the double digits ABOVE
zero! However, behind this wave is another shot of arctic air,
though not as cold as our current one. We left the NBM in place for
highs Thursday through Saturday, though they may be several degrees
to warm as NBM highs each of these days are running above the 75th
percentile. Even if we do end up a few degrees cooler than forecast,
it looks like we would only need Wind Chill Advisories at the worst
for the end of the week.
This weekend, we see a return of our El Nino base weather pattern.
Right now we have deep troughing over the Great Lakes, but next
week, ridging returns to the Great Lakes, with much milder air
returning to North America. Any southerly winds will have to battle
a deep snowpack to our south, which will likely delay a warmup some,
but we're already seeing mean h85 temps from the EPS up around 10C
above normal next week, so seeing high probabilities of above normal
temperatures returning to the CPC 8-14 day outlook makes sense.
Staying with the EPS, there's a pretty strong signal that we remain
dry through next weekend, with our next potential for more active
weather coming in the middle of, not this week, but the following
week. And when you jump between QPF and snowfall, you notice many of
the EPS members that produce QPF don't produce snow. So hopefully
you can get out and enjoy our one week of winter...
