.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 307 AM CST Sun Jan 14 2024

A cold & dry forecast will persist this week. If we look at the
calendar we will see that it's mid January and a quick step outside
will confirm it feels like mid January! An Arctic airmass has
settled into the north-central CONUS and will stay around for the
next several days. The core of the cold is west across Montana and
the Dakotas where current observations reveal air temperatures are -
40(!) to -20F. This cold will moderate some as it heads east, but
not significantly so. Current air temperatures in western Minnesota
are -20 to -10F with wind chill temps in the -30 to -40F range.
Central & eastern Minnesota are only a touch warmer with air temps
in the -15 to -5F range and wind chills in the -20 to
-30F range. Western Wisconsin is the "warm" location with air temps
in the -5 to 0F range and wind chills in the -25 to -10F range.
These are dangerously cold temperatures and they do not look to warm
up meaningfully until Tuesday afternoon. Air temperatures will
remain at or below zero through Tuesday morning. Highs will be in
the single digits below zero today and Monday afternoon with lows in
the teens below zero. Wind chill warnings remain in effect across
portions of western & southern Minnesota with Wind Chill Advisories
across eastern & central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. These
headlines may change from warning to advisory or vice versa over the
next 48 hours, but there will likely be some form of wind chill
headline in effect due to the combination of cold air temperatures
and strong northwest winds. The sfc winds will decrease some this
afternoon, but sfc winds remain in the 10-15mph range into mid-week.
While it may not be possible, but please try to limit your exposure
to the cold this week.

We finally have plenty of cold air so what about snow? The active
storm track across the central part of the country will be
suppressed further south through the next week or so. That should
rule out any major winter storm potential, but we could still see a
few light snow chances as a shortwave or two moves across the Upper
Midwest this week. This won't do much help our snow drought, but at
this rate any snow will be welcomed with open arms. Temperatures
will moderate some Tuesday & Wednesday before another shot of Arctic
air arrives for the second half of the week. This will keep our
highs a few degrees on either side of zero and our lows well below
zero heading into next weekend. There is a warm up just beyond the
forecast period, but with an expansive snowpack to our south it will
require more energy and effort to see widespread above normal
temperatures.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z MONDAY/...
Issued at 1119 AM CST Sun Jan 14 2024

A MVFR/VFR cloud deck exists across northeastern MN and WI and
is currently moving south-southeast with the low-level flow.
Forecast soundings reveal the thermal profile is just warm
enough in this region to be in the dendritic growth zone and
support clouds. These clouds should persist over our eastern
terminals through this afternoon. By this evening, the thermal
profile should be too cold to support any significant low-level
clouds resulting in VFR cigs and scattering skies for the
remainder of the period. Winds will remain west-northwesterly
near or just above 10 knots with gusts to 20 knots during the
hours of most sun.

KMSP...Low-end VFR expected this afternoon. Scattered clouds
