.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 136 PM CST Fri Jan 12 2024
An upper trough over the center of the continent will move a bit
east this week, keeping us in cold but mainly dry (after the
current system exist) flow. The obvious forecast concern in the
short term is the intensifying surface low over Illinois, which
will continue to track northeast. Although we've had some weak
forcing in place today, moisture inflow from the southeast has
been slow to occur, which much of it being cutoff by the
intensifying surface through mid-level low. We are starting to
see returns fill in again on radar across the east, and would
expect that to persist and back slowly westward this afternoon
into tonight. However, with a shorter window of precipitation
and reduced amounts given lesser moisture availability,
accumulations were pushed a bit down once again. Some
modifications were made to headlines earlier, and a few
additional modifications will be made shortly. The warning will
be ended across all but the I-90 corridor, with a transition to
a winter weather advisory elsewhere. The wind chill watch will
remain as is to highlight the potential for warning level wind
chills tomorrow night and beyond. A wind chill advisory will
fill the gap for the same area prior to that time, starting
later tonight. Locations farther east, including the Twin Cities
metro, will likely need a wind chill advisory tomorrow night
and beyond, but will allow later shifts to handle that.
The steadier light to moderate snow on the backside of the low
will continue to impact the southeast half or so of the area
through much of tonight, and then will transition to more of a
snow shower situation on Saturday. Additional accumulations
tonight through Saturday look to be from a track to around 2
inches north and west of the Twin Cities, 2-4 in the Twin Cities
metro area, trending up toward 6 inches in the far southeast
Wisconsin counties. Hoping this system doesn't have any further
surprises, but there is now pretty good consensus on
precipitation totals tonight through Saturday. The main issue
where it snows will be the winds, which continue to look to run
above 20 mph with gusts near 40 mph at times along the I-90
corridor (where the warning will remain for now). Temperatures
will continue to fall through the next few days, with wind
chills tumbling below -25 out west later tonight, and getting
near or below -35 in those area tomorrow night. The -25 wind
chills will make it to the I-35 corridor and points east
Saturday night into Sunday.
The rest of the period looks quiet, with cold northwest flow.
There could be a light snow event midweek with a weak shortwave,
but there isn't enough consensus to include any mention at this
point, so have no PoPs beyond tomorrow. Temperatures will
moderate some by midweek, but look to remain normal through the
period. For the return to school on Tuesday morning, current
wind chill forecasts are from around -25 to -30 across much of
the area, so it's a good bet that we'll still at least have wind
chill advisories at that time.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z SATURDAY/...
Issued at 1103 AM CST Fri Jan 12 2024
Surface low over Illinois will continue to intensity as it moves
northeast through the period. We will be on the west/northwest
side of the most significant snow from this system, but we will
be impacted with MVFR and IFR conditions at times, mainly from
visibility (although ceilings may get near 010 at times).
Deteriorating conditions are expected this afternoon, with the
steadiest poor conditions from late afternoon into the overnight
hours. We will see improvement with snow becoming more scattered
and lighter late tonight into Saturday. Gusty northwest winds
will persist through the period, with gusts above 35 kt possible
at times.
KMSP...Chose to omit any TEMPO groups for the time being,
although visibility could bounce around by a mile or so at
times. However, any extended period with visibilities below
3/4SM seems unlikely.
/OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/
Saturday night...MVFR. Chance of snow showers. Northwest wind 10
to 20 kt.
Sunday...MVFR. Flurries possible. Northwest wind 10 to 15 kt
becoming west.
Sunday night...MVFR possible. West wind 5 to 10 kt.
Monday...MVFR possible. Northwest wind 5 to 15 kt.
Monday night...VFR. West wind 5 to 10 kt.
Tuesday...VFR. West wind 5 to 15 kt.
