VFR conditions should prevail through this afternoon. A strong
cold front will approach and push through the region by this
evening and into the overnight hours. Ceilings begin to lower this
evening to MVFR and possibly to IFR for the overnight hours.
Scattered rainfall will also begin during the evening hours. Some
instances of freezing rain is expected tonight, especially for
interior areas west of I-65, where localized ice accumulation
values could approach a tenth of an inch in spots. Lastly,
northerly wind will strengthen during the overnight hours after
the passage of the front. Winds could gust up to 20 to 30 knots.

A large longwave trough continues to amplify across the central
U.S. early this morning. A bitterly cold arctic airmass continues
to spill from the Plains and Upper Midwestern states into the Mid-
Mississippi and Tennessee Valley regions early this morning. The
leading edge of the cold front has made its way into northern MS
and far northwestern AL where temperatures are falling into the
teens to near 20 degrees. Our forecast area remains relatively
"warmer" ahead of the front early this morning, with readings
ranging from near 30 to the mid 30s over interior areas to the
upper 30s to mid 40s along the coast as of 4 AM CST.

The forecast generally remains on track through Tuesday night as
we still expect a light freezing rain event to impact areas
especially along and northwest of the I-65 corridor tonight
through early Tuesday morning followed by the blast of bitterly
cold arctic air that will surge through our forecast area into
Tuesday night.

Winter weather impacts: A shortwave impulse embedded within W-SW
flow aloft is still on track to lift across the Gulf Coast states
this afternoon through Tuesday morning. An associated region of
enhanced moisture and ascent will spread over our forecast area by
early this evening with precipitation in the form of rain
advancing into southeast MS and southwest AL during the early to
mid evening hours. The cold front will begin to advance
southeastward across interior portions of southeast MS and
southwest AL between 9 PM and midnight this evening and should
eventually make progress to along the I-65 corridor through around
daybreak Tuesday morning. Temperatures will fall below freezing
behind the front and with precipitation still developing across
the region and a warm nose noted in the 900-700 mb layer,
conditions will be prime for light freezing rain to impact
locations along and northwest of the I-65 corridor tonight. Some
of the latest available guidance coming in overnight brings the
freezing rain potential a little further east of the I-65 corridor
before precipitation ends early Tuesday morning, so we have opted
to expand the Winter Weather Advisory to include Crenshaw,
Butler, Conecuh, and Escambia counties in AL. It still looks like
light ice accumulations mainly around a few hundredths of an inch
will impact locations within the advisory tonight into early
Tuesday morning, but it is possible there could be up to near one
tenth of an inch. We did mention potential for a brief period of
light freezing rain as far southeast as central Mobile/Baldwin
counties, but precipitation should be ending just as the cold
arrives, so confidence in light icing wasn't high enough to
include these zones in the advisory with this issuance. Overall
impacts in the advisory area include potential for a light icing
glaze that may cause slick roads, bridges, overpasses, and
sidewalks. Low temperatures early Tuesday morning will range from
as cold as 18-20 degrees in Choctaw county (where we have issued a
Hard Freeze Warning tonight into early Tuesday morning) to the
mid 20s to near 30 degrees along the I-65 corridor, to the 30s
across far southeastern portions of our region. Precipitation
should end Tuesday morning and expect dry weather Tuesday
afternoon into Tuesday night.

Bitter cold and wind chill impacts: Breezy northerly winds are
expected Tuesday afternoon with northerly winds remaining elevated
up to around 10 mph over inland areas and 10-20 mph near the coast
Tuesday night. The strong arctic ridge of high pressure will build
into the Mid-South and Gulf Coast states through Tuesday night.
Overnight lows could fall to near record levels over much of the
region, with readings ranging from 12 to 20 degrees over the
forecast area (barrier islands may be in the mid 20s). Given solid
confidence in these readings, we have issued a Hard Freeze Warning
for all of our forecast area from 9 PM Tuesday to 9 AM Wednesday.
The elevated northerly winds will result in wind chill readings as
low as 0 to 5 above northwest of the I-65 corridor and 5 to 10
above closer to the coast. A Wind Chill Advisory has also been
issued for the entire area from 9 PM Tuesday to 9 AM Wednesday
morning. /21

SHORT AND LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through Sunday)

Broad upper-level longwave troughing remains in place across the
eastern half of the CONUS through the remainder of the week. The
trough becomes more amplified on Friday as an embedded shortwave
digs southeastward and pivots around the base of the longwave
trough. The longwave finally begins to push into the western
Atlantic by the weekend as upper- level ridging builds over the
central US. At the surface, high pressure, directly overhead on
Wednesday, slowly shifts eastward on Thursday. Another strong
arctic front, associated with the digging shortwave aloft, looks
to quickly sweep through the local area late Thursday night into
Friday morning. Scattered showers are forecast along and ahead of
the cold front due to a brief increase in deep layer moisture
(PWATs around 1.1 to 1.4 inches) and weak forcing induced by the
front at the surface and the shortwave aloft. Thunderstorms are
not expected due to a lack of instability. After the passage of
the front, a strong ridge of high pressure builds in from the
north, bringing another very cold and dry arctic airmass into our
region for the upcoming weekend, with highs in the 40s and lows
Friday and Saturday nights potentially dipping below Hard Freeze
criteria. /96

Easterly to southeasterly flow persists through this evening. A
moderate to strong offshore flow develops by late Monday night
behind a strong cold front and continues through Tuesday night. A
Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the Gulf and a majority of
area bays and sounds. Occasional gusts to gale force may be
possible over the open Gulf waters. Winds subside on Wednesday and
a light to moderate onshore flow briefly re-develops on Thursday.
Strong northerly winds return on Friday as another cold front
