.KEY MESSAGES...

- Area of light snow will continue to exit east early this
  morning, lingering until about 9 AM in the Sheboygan area. By
  the time snow ends, 1 to 3 inches will be common across
  southern Wisconsin. Snow covered road will be slick during
  morning commute.

- A winter storm will bring periods of impactful snowfall
  beginning late tonight and ending Saturday morning. Strong
  winds will result in blowing/drifting, especially Friday
  evening into early Saturday. There remains uncertainty with
  the low track and associated snow amounts.

- Confidence is high in an arctic airmass moving into the region
  Saturday through the middle of next week. This will deliver
  the coldest temperatures of the season with bitter wind
  chills.

early this morning. Snow will linger in central and east central
WI through the morning rush hour. Expect snow covered roads
(especially secondary roads) and slick spots for the morning
commute.

Friday into Saturday:

All eyes are on the developing winter storm that will affect
the region Friday into Saturday morning. Overall, the 00z suite
of guidance did not improve confidence, as the expected low
track Friday afternoon into Saturday morning continues to
diverge quite a bit. The range of low passages are from the
southern portion of Lake Michigan to southeastern Michigan. As
a result, there is still uncertainty with the degree of impacts
we can expect.

One area of increasing agreement is with the warm advection
phase of the system. Snow spreads into the area from southwest
to northeast overnight tonight. Solid, deep lift will result in
widespread snow for the entire area heading into the morning
rush hour. This portion of the storm alone should be responsible
for 2 to 4 inches of snowfall.

Forecast certainty declines heading into tomorrow afternoon.
Temperatures will warm to around freezing, and a few degrees
above freezing closer to the lake front. In addition, there are
questions on the quality of large scale lift. While the
GFS/ECMWF ensemble systems maintain broad frontogenesis aloft,
higher resolution guidance (NAM, WRF, ARW) suggest weaker, more
transient upper level lift until the surface low approaches. As
a result, there are questions as to how much snow we could
accumulate from late morning into a good portion of the
afternoon. If the more sustained, broad frontogenesis signals of
the GFS/ECMWF materialize, expect steady snow.

As the surface low surges northeast later into the afternoon and
evening, winds will shift to the north increase considerably. A
deformation band of snow will move across the area and with
those gusty north winds, blowing and drifting is likely. Given
the aforementioned spread in potential low tracks, there are
questions as to just how windy we can get. Have back gusts down
a little to the 35 to 45 mph range over east central WI and
along the lake front.

Overall, have opted to maintain the winter storm watch due to
the potential for greater than six inches of snow, gusty north
winds late Friday afternoon and night and the resultant
blowing/drifting snow. Snow confidence is highest with the
morning warm advection and the Friday night deformation band.

Sunday to Wednesday:

Arctic high pressure will dominate our weather regime delivering
the coldest air of the season thus far. Temperatures will be
well below average with fresh snow cover. Low temperatures below
zero with bitter wind chills are expected each night
Saturday through Tuesday night. Highs in the single digits above
zero are expected Sunday through Tuesday. Temperatures begin to
slowly moderate by midweek.

An area of light snow continues to move across southern
Wisconsin, exiting MSN and JVL within the next hour or so. Light
snow should exit UES/MKE/ENW prior to 14z and then exit SBM by
15z. MVFR ceilings/visibility with temporary restrictions to
IFR. Once snow clears MVFR ceilings are expected through the
day.

Attention then turns to our next winter storm which will enter
from the southwest overnight tonight. Widespread light snow is
expected, reaching far eastern WI by daybreak. The greatest
impacts from this snow are just beyond this forecast cycle, but
expect IFR ceilings/visibility with the incoming snow.

A strong low pressure system of 28.7 inches is expected to move
from the Middle Mississippi River Valley into Michigan Friday
into Friday night. This low will bring another period of north
to northeast gales Friday through Saturday night. There remains
potential for storm force gusts Friday night into Saturday
morning but the latest forecast has brought winds down a bit. A
Storm Watch remains in effect for the Open water and nearshore
waters, though the north half of the lake will see the best
chance for storm force winds. This will result in substantial
waves across the entire lake of 13 to 17 feet, with some areas
seeing as high as 20 feet.
