.KEY MESSAGES...

- One more day of well above normal temperatures are expected on
  Tuesday. Some record highs may be broken.

- Thunderstorms continue to look possible for late Tuesday
  afternoon into Tuesday night. An isolated severe storm or two
  remains possible, but uncertainty remains high.

- A dusting of snow and sharply plummeting temperatures may
  cause a flash freeze and slick spots during the pre and post
  dawn hours Wednesday.

- Another rapid warmup is expected going into next weekend.

Temperatures are holding steady in the mid 50s to around 60 for
most of southern WI this evening. These will drop a bit, but
there is a good chance of breaking the record high minimum
temperatures at both Milwaukee (record 38 in 2000) and Madison
(record 38 in 1895).

Winds diminished this evening, but winds just above the surface
are strong out of the southwest over 40 mph. Therefore, a random
gust is possible through midnight until that low level jet
departs.

Tonight through Tuesday night:

Tonight, southerly winds will ease as the boundary layer
decouples from stronger momentum aloft. Overnight lows in
southeastern WI won't drop far, with temperatures in the
upper 40s to low 50s over southeastern Wisconsin and low to mid
40s elsewhere.

A strong southerly jet will aid in transporting a warm air mass
aloft northward overnight and will aid solar insolation in
giving us a very unseasonably warm day tomorrow. High
temperatures may widely reach 70 over much of southern WI,
especially in southeast WI.

Tuesday afternoon, an elongated trough is expected to approach
WI ahead a sharp baroclinic zone. During the afternoon, CAMs and
global models depict varying solutions regarding how the
elongated trough will evolve going into Tuesday evening. How the
trough evolves will drive our severe risk tomorrow. Some CAMs
depict the elongated trough deepening a sfc low over northern
IL. This solution would pinch off the warm sector over southern
WI as a secondary warm front forms, and southeast flow off the
lake causes a sfc stable layer. Still other solutions suggest
the trough will remain elongated, and southerly flow will
dominate, allowing a small window for sfc based storms in our
southeast.

Currently the thinking is that regardless of a window for sfc
based storms. Some elevated storms could occur in either
solution over southeast WI. These storms would occur with modest
mid level lapse rates of 7.5 C/km, 40 knots of effective shear,
and around 1500 J/kg of MUCAPE supporting mostly a hail threat.
Tomorrow, we'll be monitoring Mesoanalysis and sfc obs for the
surface based storm potential.

Wednesday Night through Monday:

Synopsis: Post-frontal high pressure will continue to linger across
the region Wednesday night, supporting one more chilly overnight
period heading into Thursday morning. Said high pressure will push
into the Ohio Valley Thursday afternoon, allowing southerly winds
and moderating temperatures to become established through the end of
the week. Upper level troughing will dig from the Pacific Northwest
into central portions of the CONUS this weekend, encouraging surface
cyclogenesis in the Central Plains on Sunday. The low and its
affiliated mid-level troughing will progress into the Upper
Mississippi Valley Sunday night into Monday, dragging a cold front
through the area in the process. The only appreciable precipitation
chances of the long term period thus enter the forecast by late
Sunday night/early Monday morning.

Thursday Through Sunday: Temperatures will steadily climb back into
well above-normal/possibly record-breaking territory as winds turn
out of the south behind departing high pressure. The afternoon
update shows highs remaining primarily in the 40s on Thursday, with
readings in the 50s returning to areas away Lake Michigan on Friday.
Anomalous temperature signals become particularly well-defined by
the Saturday/Sunday timeframe, when 850mb temperatures in the 90-
97.5th percentile range become widespread across southern portions
of the state. Said signals correspond nicely with the high
temperature grids, which show readings in the upper 50s/low 60s on
Saturday, and mid-upper 60s on Sunday. Expect that temps will be
considerably lower near the Lake Michigan shoreline each afternoon
given southeasterly winds in place locally.

Sunday Night Through Monday: The only appreciable precipitation
chances of the period enter the forecast as upper troughing and an
accompanying surface cold front approach from the west. Given the
anomalous warmth in place ahead of the aforementioned features,
precip will begin as all liquid/rain. Whether any embedded thunder
accompanies the rainfall/any changeover to frozen precip occurs as
colder air moves in behind the front remains uncertain, with trends
continuing to be monitored over the coming forecast cycles.

VFR conditions will persist through tonight. Southwesterly wind
shear ranging from 40 to 50 knots is occurring this evening as
the boundary layer decouples and sfc winds decrease while a
strong jet remains aloft. Wind shear should then decrease in the
few hours before dawn on Tuesday.

Toward dawn on Tuesday, some MVFR ceilings may deliver a
glancing blow to KENW as shower and storm activity moves over
the southern end of Lake Michigan.

Gusty southeasterly winds will shift to southerly overnight
into Tuesday as a broad surface low tracks over the northern
plains into Wisconsin. With strong winds just off the surface, a
few gale force gusts are possible tonight, mainly over middling
portions of the Lake. Southerly winds will then ease but remain
breezy around 20 knots Tuesday morning into Tuesday evening,
with a few thunderstorms possible across the southern half of
the lake Tuesday evening into early Tuesday night. Patchy fog is
possible over the south half of the lake Tuesday due to warm air
flowing over cooler water.

Low pressure will cross Lake Michigan and deepen over the lower
Mitten Wednesday night. Gale force northwesterlies look likely.
A Gale Watch is in effect for late Tuesday night through
Wednesday afternoon. Patchy heavy freezing spray is also
possible, mainly Wednesday, as temperatures drop across the
northern half of the lake. Northwesterly winds slowly diminish
Wednesday night.

The nearshore looks marginal for needing a gale warning, thus
they were left out of the Gale Watch at this time.
