Today through Wednesday Night:

Low pressure in the Central Plains this morning will continue to
advect northeast toward the southern edge of Lake Michigan today
into Tuesday. While the surface low moves closer to the state,
an upper level trough will begin to swing down from Canada.
Overall not much change in the synoptic set up here from
previous runs for today into Tuesday. Rainfall early this
morning is mostly confined to the warm sector and stationary
front across Illinois. There is some isentropic lift bringing
rainfall a bit further north into northern Illinois, but much
of the state will remain dry until the surface low closes the
gap between where it is now in Nebraska and Wisconsin. The
forecast area will remain on the cool side of the low in the
stratiform precipitation shield throughout much of the day.
Given the placement of the better lift, moisture and forcing
areas along the WI/IL border will have the better chances for
continuous rain than areas toward south central Wisconsin. As
temperatures cool late Monday into Tuesday there is a small
chance (roughly 25% chance) for a few snowflakes to mix in,
especially across central Wisconsin.

Now for Tuesday and Wednesday this is where uncertatiny again
begins to creep back into the forecast. Guidance continues to
struggle with the phasing of the two upper level lows and where
this will occur. Confidence is high that these two systems will
phase together, causing the low to deepen and occlude over the
central Great Lakes Region. The question is will this occur as
the low is passing through Michigan or will this occur over Lake
Huron/Erie. These discrepancies will largely effect the QPF and
areas of best lift.

Overall as the surface low traverses Illinois and Indiana
Tuesday, strengthening along the way, a deformation shield of
precipitation will develop and move through Iowa, Illinois and
southern Wisconsin. Precipitation is expected to peak Tuesday
afternoon/evening as the upper level trough digs in and places
WI on the right exit region. As the low pressure system
strengthens, the pressure gradient will tighten, which will
result in winds increasing. Now looking at the thermal profiles,
colder temperatures will being to advect south throughout the
day Tuesday. During the afternoon hours soundings trend toward
becoming isothermal around the freezing line. This will allow
southern Wisconsin to essential walk the line between rain and
snow for a couple hours until colder air can move in. Given all
of this, there is a potential for a narrow band of higher
snowfall to set up across southern Wisconsin. There is still a
lot of uncertatiny on placement and if all the ingredients will
line up to produce a wet heavy snowfall.

As the low begins to occlude Tuesday night into Wednesday,
Wisconsin is expected to remain on the western side of the low.
Again placement of the phased system is still in question, with
guidance clustering around three potential solutions. One
cluster has the sfc low lifting into central Michigan(GEFS),
another has the low shifting over Lake Michigan (Euro), while
the last option is further east with the low over eastern
Michigan (Canadian). Regardless of the track the general though
process is that snow will continue on the western flack of the
surface low Tuesday night into Wednesday. Winds will become
gusty during this time as the pressure gradient rapidly
tightens. With this expected to be a wet and slushy snowfall
there are not concerns for blowing or drifting snow. While
snowfall is likely to accumulate on grassy surfaces,
temperatures near freezing and a higher sun angle will likely
result in slushy snowfall. The differences in the guidance are
thus effecting the location of higher snowfall rates and the
potential for some larger accumulations. The closer the low
pressure system remains to Wisconsin the higher these totals
could become and the gustier the winds. If this system takes a
more eastern approach (ends up further away for our CWA), then
snowfall will trend downward.

The large low pressure area over the lower Great Lakes to New
England mid week will finally move ewd on Thu with lessening nly
winds over srn WI. An Omega Block will then slowly progress across
the USA through the weekend. The upper ridging of the block will
affect srn WI for the weekend with the sfc ridge first arriving on
Fri. Pleasant weather and gradually warming temps are expected.

No major changes to the forecast since the previous discussion.

The lighter northeast winds will gradually pick up through this
afternoon as a low pressure system lifts toward Wisconsin. By
this evening, lower MVFR to IFR ceilings are expected to move in
from the west. These lower ceilings will be accompanied by
gustier winds with gusts of 25 kts likely. The northeast winds
will become northerly Tonight into Tuesday. Gusts will wane a
bit overnight as the winds begin to shift.

Rainfall will begin to move back into the state late this
morning as the low pressure system gets closer to the state.
Rain will move across the area from west to east. Terminals near
central Wisconsin will likely see breaks in the rainfall and
will seeing lighter rain in comparison to terminals near the
WI/IL border. Light to moderate and more continuous rain is
expected across far southern Wisconsin. Tonight there is a small
chance for a few snowflakes to mix in as temperatures drop.

Northeast winds will gradually increase this morning becoming
breezy as a low pressure system in the Central Plains around 29.5
inches moves into the Great Lakes Region. This low will pass
south of Lake Michigan tonight. As winds increase today, gusts
to 25 knots will be likely, thus a Small Craft Advisory is in
effect from noon today through Tuesday night.  Breezy
northeasterly winds will then continue into Tuesday, becoming
northerly Tuesday night. Northerly winds will increase Wednesday
with gales possible as the the aforementioned low pressure
deepens to around 29.2 inches and occludes over Lake Huron,
dragging a strong pressure gradient over the upper Great Lakes
region through Thursday. Thus, a Gale Watch is in effect for
Wednesday morning through Thursday morning. Lighter winds and
high pressure looks to fill in behind this system for the end of
the week and into the weekend.
