.KEY MESSAGES...

- A winter storm will continue bring periods of impactful
  snowfall this morning into Saturday morning. Strong winds will
  result in blowing/drifting of snow that will reduce
  visibilities. Near blizzard conditions are possible. Lower
  snow amounts are likely along the lakeshore.

- Confidence is high in an arctic airmass moving into the region
  Saturday night through the middle of next week. This will
  deliver the coldest temperatures of the season with bitter
  wind chills.

.UPDATE...
Issued 1040 AM CST Fri Jan 12 2024

After looking through models and observations this morning,
there are a few things of note with the ongoing winter storm.
Models were showing a rain/snow mix or transition to rain for
lakeshore areas for a time today, but not seeing this in any of
the latest short term guidance this morning. Accumulations are
struggling lakeside as expected though, with snow to liquid
ratios around 5 to 1 through mid-morning. Also, there was a
concern for some mid level dry air causing a significant drop in
snowfall rates this afternoon, but the bulk of model soundings
now show deep saturation throughout the event. Additionally,
this morning round of snow with the warm air advection has been
very impressive, with just over 6 inches of snow at the office
here by 9:45 am. Model QPF has stayed the course, if not nudged
up a tad higher compared to 24 hours ago. No real surprise with
the low track so far this morning, though a couple high res
models want to take the low almost to the WI/IL state line,
which would bring a dry slot into the south. Leaning away from
this though given the bulk of guidance and latest obs.

The highest widespread snowfall rates for this storm are still
expected to be through the morning hours with the strong warm
air advection. The higher rates may continue east into the
afternoon away from the lakeshore due to the lake enhancement.
Though many areas may not see 1-2" an hour rates this afternoon,
steady accumulating snowfall is expected to persist.

In all, it looks like this system is heading towards the higher
end of our forecasted ranges, with increasing confidence
locations could reach the foot mark. Still looks like the
highest QPF will be in the east closer to the track of the low,
with a boost from lake enhancement likely too. Though rates will
struggle along the lake through this afternoon, snow amounts are
expected to be significantly higher farther inland.

Mentioned near blizzard conditions in the update to the warning
this morning. Still not confident enough in sustained and
widespread blizzard conditions to upgrade to a Blizzard Warning. The
snow will be drier and easier to blow in the west, but winds
aren't expected to be quite as strong there. The winds are
stronger east, but the snow is wetter due to the milder temps
and will be more difficult to blow around. The snow will turn
more powdery across the area this evening into tonight, though
snowfall rates will gradually decrease overnight. Regardless of
whether we hit blizzard criteria or not, travel will be very
difficult due to the high snowfall rates, reducing visibility
and keeping roads snow covered.

Today through Saturday:

Lgt to mdt snow via a strong surge of 850-700 mb warm, moist
advection and frontogenesis is now overspreading srn WI from nrn
IL. Mdt to heavy snow will continue to develop early this AM as
it shifts nwd and is supported aloft by PVA and the right
entrance region of an upper jet.

A 995 MB sfc low over srn MO is then expected to deepen to 978
MB as it moves to ne IN by 00Z Sat. The main catalyst for this
deepening is the strong upper wave over TX that will lift newd
on a swly 150 kt jet streak. Occlusion will occur tnt as the sfc
low slows and moves to wrn Lake Huron by 12Z Sat. The shortwave
trough currently over the central Great Plains will move ewd and
become absorbed by the occlusion, but provide PVA and continued
lift to srn WI. The strong enely winds in response to the
deepening low will contribute to frictional convergence and lake
enhanced snow for the lake counties, including Washington and
Jefferson Counties today through this evening. Thus the highest
qpf of 1.30-1.60 inches is located over this area with 0.85-1.05
inches well inland and over south central WI into Saturday. A
rain and snow mixture is likely at the lakefront and could move
slightly inland this afternoon, but overall more snow will occur
than the storm a few days ago. Snow accums of 3-6 inches at the
lakefront and 7-13 inches elsewhere over srn WI. A wet to
neutral snow ratio will limit the blowing and drifting, but it
will increase late today and tnt as winds back to nly and temps
cool. Will have to watch for potential blizzard conditions
toward east central WI where wind gusts will be the strongest
and steadier snow tnt due to its closer proximity to the
occlusion.

Moderate to heavy snow will continue into early this afternoon
across the area, with 1/4 to 1/2 mile visibility at times.
Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour or greater are possible, except
for terminals near the lake where milder temperatures will limit
rates and slushy snow should occur. Gusty east northeast winds
will continue as well, with ceilings around 500 feet AGL.

There may be a lull in the intensity of the snow this afternoon at
times, especially near the lake with the milder temperatures.
Still expect generally moderate snow with visibility of 1/2 to 1
mile, perhaps higher values near the lake. Snow rates should be
1/2 to 1 inch per hour, perhaps higher in localized heavier
bands. Gusty winds will gradually shift to the northeast by late
afternoon and early evening. Ceilings should remain around 500
feet AGL or so.

Moderate snow with 1/2 to 1 mile visibility should linger this
evening, before becoming light and 1 to 2 miles or so later
tonight. On and off light snow showers should remain on Saturday.
Snowfall rates should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch per hour tonight,
locally higher, with up to 1/4 inch per hour rates with any light
snow showers on Saturday. Ceilings should gradually rise from 500
to around 1500 feet AGL tonight into Saturday.

Gusty winds will become stronger tonight into Saturday, as they
back from the northeast to northwest tonight and west on Saturday.
This will bring more impacts from blowing and drifting snow, as
temperatures drop and the snow composition becomes more fluffy.
May see visibility reductions to 1 mile or less at times with the
blowing and drifting snow tonight into Saturday.

A strong low pressure system around 29.4 inches over northwest
Arkansas early this morning will move into northeast Indiana and
strengthen to around 28.9 inches by early this evening. The low
will move across Lower Michigan and into Lake Huron tonight into
Saturday, before shifting further northeast Saturday night.

This strong low will bring gales to the open waters of Lake Michigan
today into Saturday, lingering across the southern half of the
lake into Saturday night. Gale Warnings are in effect.

Storm force gusts are expected over the northern half of the lake
later this afternoon and evening, where a Storm Warning is in
effect. These winds will result in substantial waves across the
lake today into Saturday night.

Gusty west to northwest winds and much colder temperatures Sunday
into next week will bring freezing spray across the entire lake.

Snow has begun to overspread the region this morning and will
continue to lift north through the morning, creating hazardous
driving conditions heading into the morning commute. Into this
afternoon we may see a lull in heavier snow but will pick up in
the evening again, especially near the lake as lake enhancement
will dominate. In addition winds will pick up later this afternoon

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Snow showers through the day on Saturday. Blowing and drifting
snow is likely at times through Sunday in addition so light snow
accumulations. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the entire

A period of bitter cold wind chills and cold temperatures is
expected Saturday night into early next week. Wind chills between
