Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move through eastern NC early this evening.
High pressure then builds into the area through mid-week. Low
pressure and another front is expected to impact the region late
in the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 730 PM...The frontal boundary continues to slowly push
south and will slide farther offshore this evening. Showers and
thunderstorms linger from a line roughly from Rodanthe to
Wallace but have been weakening as we lose heating this
evening. The showers will continue to slide offshore and expect
most to be offshore before midnight. Evening update mainly
captures PoP and T/Td trends.

Previous discussion...As earlier expected, the surface cold
front has merged with the sea breeze near the immediate coast
during peak heating. This has led to the development of heavy
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon along the coast. The
showers have had intense rainfall rates of 1-2" in only 30-45
minutes which has led to minor poor drainage flooding and deep
ponding of water on roads. Outflow boundaries associated with
the initial convection are moving inland which will result in
additional showers and storms developing for the remainder of
the daylight hours with the main threat being localized
flooding. The CAMs support common amounts of 1-2" with local
amounts of 4"+ certainly possible with PW values >2" and ML
CAPES up to 1500 J/kg. The showers and storms are forecast to
decrease in coverage and intensity around 00Z this evening with
the loss of heating. Any residual evening showers should be
confined to the coast and end around midnight as seasonally
strong high pressure builds in from the north tonight behind the
front which should be offshore by late evening.

Cooler and drier NE post frontal flow develops tonight with
clearing skies and noticeably cooler low 60s low temps expected
inland. It will take longer for the dry air to filter in along
the coast thus low will be milder in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY/...
As of 320 PM Mon...Tuesday will be breezy/windy and pleasantly
cooler and less humid as strong high pressure builds in from the
north. Skies will be mostly clear inland and partly cloudy
along the coast. The models have trended drier so will confine
any mention of precipitation to the offshore waters. It will be
breezy inland and windy coast with northeasterly winds around
10-20 mph inland and 20-30 mph along the coast with higher gusts
up to 40 mph.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 2:30 AM Monday...A cooler and drier air mass will make for
pleasant weather through the first half of the week before an
approaching low will increase rain and thunderstorm chances towards
the end of the week.

Wednesday...Increased moisture and an additional source of lift
in the way of a surface trough across the coast will create an
environment that's suitable for more widespread shower and
thunderstorm activity east of Highway 17 (25-40%). Highs will be
around the same (low 80s) but it will be slightly more humid
given the increase in moisture. A low off the FL/GA coast be
moving its way up the east coast.

Thursday - Saturday...High pressure will be moving off the northeast
coast while a low off the FL/GA coast will be moving its way north
towards the Carolinas. In the upper levels, a trough will dig into
the upper midwest. This setup will bring daily chances of showers
and thunderstorms across ENC. As of now, chances will peak on Friday
(45-55%) but there remains a 30-50% chance Thursday - Saturday. The
track of the low will greatly impact the severity of any
thunderstorm activity.

Sunday...The low will be moving away from the coast and leave ENC in
a pleasant air mass with much lower dew points.

SHORT TERM /through Tuesday/...
As of 730 PM Mon...Frontal boundary and lingering showers will
slowly push offshore through the evening. Pred VFR across rtes
this evening except occasional MVFR assoc with showers which
will continue through around 03z, potentially impacting EWN/OAJ
the longest. High pressure builds in behind the front with NE
winds with pred VFR through the rest of the TAF period. NE winds
will become gusty Tuesday with gusts up to 25 kt expected which
may bring cross wind issues at EWN runway 14R/32L.

LONG TERM /Tuesday night through Saturday/...
As of 3 AM Monday...Daily shower and thunderstorm chances will
be increasing through the week with greatest coverage on Friday.
Also of note is the gusty northeasterly flow expected through
the period. Winds will be their strongest Tuesday-Wednesday at
10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt (25+ kt along the OBX). NE flow
will decrease to around 10 kt by Thursday and Friday.

SHORT TERM /through Tuesday/...
As of 730 PM Mon...SCA's are in effect for all of the waters
tonight through Tue. The cold front was moving slowly through
the southern waters late today and should be south of the waters
by late evening. Behind the front tonight NE winds will
increase to 20-30 kt with occasional gusts to 35 kt late this
evening through Tue as strong high pressure builds in. Seas will
build from 2-4 ft late today to 5-9 ft late tonight and Tue.

LONG TERM /Tuesday night through Saturday/...
As of 3 AM Monday...Hazardous Marine conditions are expected
through most of the period. Winds will somewhat relax on
Wednesday (NE 15- 20 with gusts to 20-25 kt) but elevated seas
will stick around through the period. Given these conditions,
SCAs should remain in effect for all of the coastal waters
through much of the week.
