Some forecast changes as the forecast evolves with today's event
starting to come into focus. Starting off, the boundary meandering
across southern Miami-Dade County will likely serve as a
convective focus for any strong to severe storms that develop and
potential for excessive rainfall accumulations. The latest Day 1
Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center captures this marginal
risk of severe weather well. One factor inhibiting convection
north of the boundary is a relatively well-entrenched surface
inversion. The morning 12z MFL sounding shows a convective
temperature of 81 degrees F which will be difficult to meet today.
Actually trimmed back temperatures a degree or two in most areas
as the observed trends with this morning's warm up were quite
muted.
On the flip side, along and south of the boundary, convection has
been developing and quickly zipping east-northeastward. Key West
radar has shown several discrete supercell-like features
attempting to develop but as of yet they have not been able to tap
into the deeper shear evident on the morning sounding. At some
point, the expectation is that some more stout convection will
develop and be able to better access the conditionally favorable
environment to produce the localized threat of severe weather
including 60+ mph winds and tornadic activity.
Moving into the overnight period, guidance continues to trend
higher with regards to the wind and associated gusts on the
backside of the exiting low. By Monday morning, it is possible
that frequent gusts to gale force could materialize over the
Atlantic waters. A Gale Watch has been posted from 06z tonight to
06z Tuesday. Even beyond the Gale Watch, Small Craft Advisories
previously were posted through 00z Wednesday. We will continue to
monitor both the low track and how the winds on the back side
materialize. The threat of a wake low developing cannot be ruled
out which could enhance wind speeds on Monday and necessitate a
Gale Warning and possibly a Wind Advisory for portions of the
peninsula. The current boundary position continues to be south of
where previous guidance runs had placed it and the stronger winds
to the north could end up translating southward accordingly.

An approaching cold front will drive an increase in shower and
thunderstorm chances early this morning. Over the coming hours,
convective coverage is expected to increase overnight through
the morning hours, most of South Florida will wake up to a cloudy
and increasingly rainy Sunday. A low level jet will develop over
the southern portions of the peninsula which could help enhance
rainfall amounts and allow for more stout convection, especially
if a surface low is able to develop and move across the peninsula
on its way to the Atlantic. Amounts of 2 to 3 inches cannot be
ruled out in localized areas, particularly if an area were to see
the accumulation in a few hours and is prone to flooding due to
poor drainage. A few strong thunderstorms may be possible mainly
across Southern portions of the area this afternoon just south of
the front, although the more widespread activity should remain in
the form of showers.
Shower and thunderstorm activity should begin to wane pretty
rapidly after sunset as the parent low pushes into the western
Atlantic. A few showers will be possible on Monday on the backside
of the low, but most of the day should remain dry - especially
the latter half of Monday.
As the boundary is expected to push through the area through
the day today, temperatures could vary widely across the area.
Highs should generally reach the lower 70s for southeast portions
of the area but could remain in the 60s for northern and southwest
portions of the area.
Models depict the surface low migrating eastward and moving away
from the peninsula by early Monday, with high pressure quickly
building across the region in its wake. A more stable and drier
air mass will follow, with most of the showers ending before noon
on Monday.

The majority of the rest of the week should remain fairly stable
as broad and deep high pressure firmly establishes over the SE
CONUS, with little to no rain expected each day. Temperatures will
remain near or just below normals through the middle of the week
as cool air advection prevails. Expect highs to remain in the
upper 60s north to low 70s elsewhere through Wednesday, then
gradually warming up into the mid-upper 70s towards the weekend.
Lows will likely drop into the 40s/50s through Thursday and then
warming up on Friday as the high shifts to the east and southerly
flow returns.
