Upper level ridge begins to slide eastward over the course of today.
Southwesterly flow takes hold and helps temperatures warm well into
the 70s for most with the exception of the higher elevations. Low
level flow remains southerly across the Plains and brings in
moisture for Friday morning. Lows, especially over the eastern
zones, only dip to near 50F with low to mid 40s elsewhere. A
shortwave trough moves in ahead of the main trough tonight and
increases rain chances, particularly over the Presidio Valley.
Showers will gradually push to the east over the course of the day.

The main upper level trough enters the region Friday morning with a
mid-level jet oriented west to east across Northern Mexico. Winds
begin increasing over the mountains during the late morning, so a
High Wind Watch begins for the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains.
Breezy conditions expand to the adjacent plains and further
expansion of wind products will likely be needed in future
forecasts. A Pacific front traverses West Texas and southeast New
Mexico over the course of Friday afternoon and limits warming for
areas west of the Pecos River. Western areas reach into the mid to
upper 60s and areas east end up in the low 70s.

A significant wind event is becoming more likely across the area
this weekend.

An intense storm system will develop along the Front Range of the
Rockies early Saturday. The pressure gradient will tighten as
surface low pressure deepens rapidly over SE CO. You will wake up
Saturday morning to already windy conditions across much of the
region and it will only get worse from there. The associated upper
trough will become negatively tilted during the day Saturday as a
strong mid level jet develops along its southern periphery. This
jet will cross directly overhead with winds >50 kts at 700 mb over
most of our region. Latest ensemble guidance suggests a medium to
high (60%-80%) chance of wind gusts >60 mph along and west of the
Pecos River. Due to the increased confidence in these winds a
High Wind Watch has been posted. Further east, winds will still be
strong with a medium (50%) chance of wind gusts >50 mph. Due to
the expected track of the surface low moving from NW to SE across
the S. Plains, this will be a prolonged wind event with high winds
likely lasting through Saturday night and into early Sunday.
Areas of blowing dust are likely and given similar recent wind
events, we could see dust plumes develop and move into the region
originating from N. Mexico. The airmass associated with these
winds will be of Pacific origin so temperatures will remain above
normal.

The winds will finally relax late Sunday as mid level ridging builds
in across the region. Mild, but quiet conditions are expected
Monday/Tuesday before another storm system brings more wind
midweek.

02Z Friday, when winds are expected to back more to the south and
south-southeast along and northeast of the Pecos River, with

River. From 12Z to 16Z Friday, IFR CIGs and MVFR VIS are possible
at MAF, due to BR. From 15Z to 17Z, winds will be veering back to
the south-southwest for most terminals, with winds becoming
increasingly gusty near or above 20 knots after 17Z. VFR CIGs and
VIS will prevail after 16Z Friday at all terminals.
