After ~87 hours below freezing the last few days, our area has
surged back above freezing and are on track to make it well into the
50s and 60s. Temperatures dip back into the low to mid 30s across
the Permian Basin with a few spots near or just below freezing. 40s
are expected for places west of the Pecos River Valley. A short wave
trough passes just to the north of the region tonight and tomorrow
with flow shifting westerly. This will increase winds across the
mountains, thus have upgraded the High Wind Watch to a warning for
the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains. Have shortened the warning
as winds decrease quickly ahead of a cold front and confidence is
low on gap winds occurring even after the front moves through.
The cold front pushes through from the northeast late Thursday night
with the front entering the Permian Basin and southeast New Mexico
just before midnight local time. The cold and dry air will be
somewhat delayed behind the front and does not look to arrive until
the early morning hours on Friday. Even then, lows across the Basin
and southeast New Mexico tumble into the low 20s with the northern
tier of counties possibly getting into the upper teens. Breezy post
frontal conditions will send wind chills into the teens and single
digits for much of the Permian Basin making it feel bitterly cold
once again. No precipitation of any type is expected in the short
term, even with the coming cold front.

Friday, an upper ridge will be moving into the Rockies, leaving West
Texas and Southeast New Mexico under dry northwest flow aloft. At
the surface, the cold front will be pushing through the higher
terrain southwest, if not already at the border by 12-15Z.
Unfortunately, this will yield the coldest day this forecast,
although nothing like the past few days. Models are in pretty good
agreement in taking highs ~ 16-18F below normal. Post-frontal
breezy conditions will make for a blustery day. Gap winds
through KGDP will be bumping right up against criteria, but even the
NBM90 keeps them below, and suggests a watch is not warranted attm.
We'll leave a mention in the HWO.
Friday night looks to be the coldest night this forecast, despite
surface winds veering to east and remaining somewhat elevated, as
well as cloud cover increasing from the west. Overnight minimums
should bottom out 6-8F below normal, Again, nothing like the past
few days, but cold enough for these parts.
The upper ridge moves through the region Saturday, but to little
effect. Surface winds will veer back to return flow, but the cold
airmass will be difficult to dislodge, and temperatures may
increase a degree or so over Friday's.
Southwest flow aloft follows the ridge, with a warming trend
as thicknesses increase through Monday. Even so, highs should
plateau Monday afternoon just above normal, with a downslope warming
assist. Long-range models bring a shortwave through the area
Monday, possibly kicking off a few showers Sunday night.
Chances for showers look better Tuesday as a deeper trough digs into
Sonora/Chihuahua. However, long-range models are out of sync is
strength/timing of this feature. At this point, best chances for
showers look to be Tuesday afternoon, w/a slight decrease in highs
as thicknesses come down and cloud cover increases. A weak front
Tuesday night will try to backdoor the area Wednesday, shaving a
couple of degrees off Tuesday's highs and maintaining a chance of
showers east as the trough arrives.
