Issued at 251 PM CST Sat Jan 6 2024

he main theme of the short term will be strong winds as a pair of
upper troughs moving through keep strong winds aloft in place. The
first trough is a shortwave currently overhead and should pivot to
north Texas later this afternoon. Gusty winds have already picked up
across the region today brought down by diurnal mixing. A weak front
accompanying today's shortwave is also nosing into the northern
Permian Basin and northern Lea County this afternoon. This front
won't bring much impact other than some clouds.

Even stronger winds build tomorrow as a larger/deeper larger trough
digs into southern AZ/NM by 12z Monday morning. Ahead of this
trough, while the afternoon will be gusty again, a stark low level
jet develops Sunday evening, bringing likely Advisory criteria winds
to the southeast Permian Basin and lower Trans Pecos overnight
Sunday. With the stronger winds expected Monday afternoon, have held
off on any updates to the wind hazards in an effort to
simplify/streamline messaging, though an Advisory is likely needed
in the next forecast update or so here.

As for temperatures, today's highs are shaping up to be near-
identical to yesterday. The weak front should have minimal impacts
on the temperatures though surface high pressure moving through
promotes light winds, when paired with clear skies should lead to
efficient radiational cooling and lows in the 20s for most. With
the strong southerly winds, sunshine, and subsidence behind today's
shortwave, tomorrow is shaping up to be a few degrees warmer. Sunday
night's lows feature warmer lows than tonight thanks to the LLJ and
increased winds.

Ascent ahead of Sunday/Monday's larger trough is expected to bring
rain and snow showers chances to our far western zones late Sunday
night into early Monday morning. QPF amounts are negligible and
accumulations aren't expected, though snow showers paired with
strong winds may lead to areas of blowing snow and visibility
reductions along portions of Highway 90 between Marfa and Van Horn
and I-10 between Van Horn and the I-10/I-20 split.

A dynamic start to the week is expected for the region as an upper
level low digs across New Mexico and West Texas. Associated 700mb
jet pivots from a west-east orientation to northwest-southeast and
will bring high winds to the mountains across southeast New Mexico
and West Texas. Strong winds advect and hold cold air along the HWY
90 corridor where weak snow showers may develop. Any snow that falls
will immediately be blown, so no accumulation is expected. For
Monday afternoon, wind speeds increase with sustained winds reaching
into the 30-40mph range with gusts gusts exceeding 50mph becoming
likely areawide. Areas of blowing dust will likely develop during
this time and lead to brief periods of reduced visibility along
roads.

Colder and drier air filters in behind the front that will shove
through on Monday leading to temperatures staying below normal with
40s in the higher elevations and low 50s across the Basin. Wind
speeds decrease late Monday night and early Tuesday morning with
breezy conditions remaining across Big Bend and eastern portions of
the Permian Basin. Advected cold air settles in with teens across
the Marfa Plateau and portions of Culberson County and low to mid
20s for SE NM and the Permian Basin.

Into the middle of the week, more zonal(west to east) flow takes
hold over the Desert Southwest and Texas. Winds take a westerly to
southwesterly turn and bring daytime temperatures above normal into
the low 60s. The next system to approach comes late Thursday and
into Friday bringing windy conditions and pushing through another
cold front that knocks temperatures back below normal.

VFR conditions are forecast at all area terminals through 08/06Z.
Light winds initially early Sunday morning will become southerly
and start to crank up as a surface low develops over the central
High Plains. As a result, winds of 20 knots or more sustained with
gusts over 30 knots are expected across much of the region
Sunday. As the surface low continues to strengthen Sunday night,
LLWS calls are warranted at KMAF, KHOB, and KFST with winds 45-50
knots just off the deck. Look for these conditions to persist
beyond 08/06Z.

reduce visibility.

A wintry mix is possible late tonight, mainly over the Guadalupe
Mountains, Van Horn and the Highway 54 Corridor, Marfa Plateau, and
upper Presidio Valley.  Little to no accumulation expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

A wintry mix is possible Monday, mainly over the Presidio Valley,
Marfa Plateau, and Chinati Mountains.  No accumulation expected.

A High Wind Warning is in effect through Monday evening for the
Guadalupe, Delaware, Davis, and Chinati Mountains, Davis Mountain
Foothills, Marfa Plateau, Eddy County Plains, Van Horn and the

possible over the rest of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.
