Expect another quiet night, but with warmer temperatures as
southerly winds return. Lows will bottom out in the upper 40s to
near 50 degrees. Our next storm system will approach from the west
Friday and you will notice some big changes. Lee surface troughing
will set up across our area and with a tightening gradient, winds
will increase drastically by late morning. 20-30 mph sustained with
higher gusts will affect mainly the Lower Trans Pecos and Permian
Basin. A low level jet intensifies after sunset allowing winds to
only increase, especially across the Stockton Plateau. Will issue a
Wind Advisory for this and surrounding locations through the
overnight hours Friday. Increasing moisture will keep low much
warmer with nearly everyone staying in the 50s. Overall conditions
worsen as we head into Saturday.

.LONG TERM...

Still eyeing up a windy weekend to start the long term as a trough
and associated jet swing through the region. The base of the trough
ejects from the New Mexico from 12-18z Saturday, which is a somewhat
fortunate time-table in that the strongest jet core doesn't
align with peak heating despite clear skies and mixing to near
700mb. Furthermore, the trough timing also pushes the Pacific
Front through earlier in the day, with fairly good ensemble
agreement in FROPA at KMAF as early as 15z. This early front
timing may limit winds some but it will still be quite a windy
day, especially across the Guadalupes and adjacent plains. We have
expanded the High Wind Watch to include Eddy County and eastern
Culberson County as such with Lea County and the Davis Mountains
being borderline for high winds. Advisory-level winds will likely
be quite expansive outside of the lower Trans Pecos/Big Bend. With
the upper trough becoming negatively-tilted and a secondary
shortwave rounding the southern edge into Sunday, elevated winds
linger through Sunday as well. However, the main core of the jet
lifts to our north and winds will be much weaker than Saturday but
still quite breezy, even for our standards.

Upper flow never turns northwesterly on the back-side of this
weekend's trough as the next upper disturbance digs through the
Desert Southwest on Monday. This next system won't bring overly
strong winds given how far south it looks to track and may
actually bring some precipitation chances. Typically for March,
low level moisture remains fairly low back in our neck of the
woods behind this wekeend's system but moisture return could bring
some quality rainfall chances to our far eastern zones early/mid
next week.

As for temperatures, the Pacific front on Saturday brings highs
back down to the 60s and 70s, recovering back to the 70s areawide
for Sunday. Monday serves as the warmest day (low 80s) before a
cooling trend comes Tuesday/Wednesday as a surface low and cold
front bring easterly to northerly winds.

As a robust upper trough swings through the Desert Southwest
tomorrow, southerly flow ramps up in the afternoon. Meanwhile,
dry air and temperatures well into the mid/upper 80s sends RH down
to 7-11 percent leading to widespread RFTIs of 3-4 with some
locally higher values. While ERCs are generally in the 50th-75th
percentile (highest along the lower Pecos Valley and Terrell
County), are leaning more towards near-critical wording and a
Rangeland Fire Danger statement will likely be issued in the next
forecast package for Friday.

As the main jet associated with the upper level system draws
closer for Saturday, winds turn westerly and become quite strong.
The one saving grace for Saturday is the timing of the upper
trough and associated Pacific Front passing through somewhat
earlier in the day. This front will ease how low humidity and how
high winds may get but even still, RFTIs reach 6-7 for most
along/north of I-10. High ERCs down south overcome the more
marginal ERCs so an areawide Fire Weather Watch has been issued
for Saturday.

Very dry conditions linger for Sunday and into Monday but lighter
winds keep fire weather concerns to elevated at best. Some relief
looks to come beyond Monday as the next storm system brings cooler
and less dry air.
