Initial area of mid level warm, moist advection has finally begun
to produce some precipitation across parts of our area. The more
widespread showers and thunderstorms have developed to the south
in Arkansas where that moist advection is more substantial. This
will lift off to the NNE through the overnight hours, arriving in
the southern portion of our forecast area during the 10 o'clock
hour. There is enough elevated instability above the moist
advecting layer that some small hail is possible in thunderstorms
overnight. More stable low levels should mitigate the threat for
stronger wind gusts.

.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Friday Night)

Water vapor imagery shows a mid-level trough over the Arizona/New
Mexico region while at the surface a low is strengthening over the
Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles. Through the remainder of the
afternoon these features will slide eastward in lockstep and by this
evening the surface low will be knocking on the door of the mid-
Mississippi Valley, strengthening from upper level coupled jet
support. Rain will start to push into the forecast area this evening
ahead of the low, enhanced by strong WAA along the LLJ. Snow will
initially mix into rain across northeast Missouri and west-central
Illinois as precipitation starts thanks to cooler low-level
temperatures from the existing snowpack. However, as the WAA
continues low-level temperatures are expected to warm above freezing
and precipitation will transition to all rain. Several guidance
sources are depicting the 850mb layer warming quicker than the
ground, and this warm nose could result in a brief period of wintry
mix as the snow is transitioning to rain. But ensemble guidance
limits this signature temporally in the soundings and indicates a
low (20-30%) chance of ice accumulations greater than 0.01".
Instability will increase through the evening from the increased WAA
and the available 100-200 J/kg of MUCAPE will result in isolated to
scattered thunder is expected within the broader rain shield as it
increases in coverage overnight. The potential for strong to severe
thunderstorms will remain south of the forecast area.
Rain and a few rumbles of thunder will continue across the forecast
area into the morning hours as surface temperatures remain above
freezing. The surface low will move through the forecast area during
the morning and sub-freezing air will push into the region on the
backside of the low. As surface temperatures fall below freezing
during the late morning across our western CWA to mid afternoon
across the central and eastern CWA, rain will transition to snow.
Despite the strength of the cold air, slight differences in timing
of the lowest 200 mb dropping below freezing could result in a brief
period of wintry mix before transitioning completely to snow. Little
to no ice accumulations are expected thanks to very warm surface
conditions. Sub-freezing air is not expected to move quickly enough
into the region to support flash freezing conditions, and the rapid
freezing of water on roadways is not expected.
Confidence is high (90+%) that a majority of the forecast area will
see at least 0.25+" of liquid QPF, with 70% of ensemble guidance
indicating 0.75+" of liquid QPF areas along and east of a line
stretching from southeast Missouri through the St. Louis metro into
west-central Illinois (roughly from Mountain View, MO to St. Louis,
MO to Peoria, IL). A majority of this precipitation is expected to
fall as rain ahead of the cold air moving into the region. Light QPF
in the wake of the low will result in snow accumulations generally
less than 4". The highest accumulations are expected across
northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois where initial snowfall
tonight will boost totals and temperatures are expected to drop
below freezing sooner than many other locations. Guidance continues
to show a signal for an overlap in mid-level ascent and the
deformation zone across a portion of the CWA during the afternoon
Friday. If this enhanced area of precipitation overlaps with the sub-
freezing air an area of enhanced snowfall will occur and boost
snowfall amounts by 1-2". The mid-level trough will eject out of the
region Friday evening and widespread subsidence from rising heights
will help to end snowfall during the late afternoon to evening.
A strong pressure gradient on the backside of the low as it moves
through the forecast area Friday will result in strong sustained and
gusty westerly winds across the forecast area from Friday afternoon
through early Saturday morning. 60+% of ensemble guidance supports
sustained winds at least 30 mph, mainly east of the Mississippi
River, and 60+% members supporting gusts up to 45 mph across most of
the CWA. In light of the strong dynamics with this system I have
issued a Wind Advisory for the entire CWA from 18Z Friday through
12Z Saturday. Winds will be capable of blowing snow where
accumulations have occurred, resulting in periods of reduced
visibility. Additionally, high profile vehicles driving along north-
south roads should exercise caution, particularly in areas where
trees and buildings do not block the westerly winds.

.LONG TERM... (Saturday through Next Thursday)

The emphasis on this period will be a multi-day period of bitterly
cold temperatures, peaking Sunday-Tuesday.
The ensembles and deterministic models are in good agreement with
the overall synoptic pattern through Tuesday featuring a broad deep
long wave trof dominating much of North America. A series of short
wave trofs rotating through the longwave Saturday-Tuesday will
result in continued deepening of the longwave and allow
progressively colder waves of air to pour into the region attendant
with building Arctic high pressure.
Putting the cold in context and potential impacts: The
aforementioned period from Sunday-Tuesday will feature the coldest
air magnitude-wise since the late December/Christmas 2022 cold snap.
However the overall period of bitterly cold in this case will be
longer-lived with a 3-day stretch of 20-30 degree below normal
temperatures, highs remaining below 20F, wind chills remaining below
0F for 3 consecutive days, and periods of dangerously cold wind
chills of 15 to 30 below zero. Central and northeast MO and west-
central IL will feature the most extreme conditions with lows well
below zero and highs Sunday-Monday in the single digits. People
without appropriate shelter or those venturing outdoors without
adequate clothing will be highly susceptible to frostbite and
hypothermia, while the extremely cold temperatures could also result
in scattered infrastructure impacts like broken pipes and water
mains.
As far as snowfall chances, an initial migratory low-amplitude wave
on Saturday and attendant weak elongated forcing and weak
frontogenesis could produce a brief period of very light
snow/flurries translating northwest-southeast across the area.
Should this occur it looks non-impactful. We are still eyeing better
potential for light snow in the Sunday-Tuesday time frame and this
could come in two distinct events. The first event Sunday afternoon-
night has greatest continuity and probability of occurrence at this
time, and remains largely focused along/south of I-70. This is
associated with another migratory low-amplitude short wave trof
moving through the longwave and its attendant large scale forcing
and frontogenetic forcing. This will be a high SLR event. Exceedance
probabilities from the latest 100 member Grand Ensemble are 50-80%
for measurable snow within the aforementioned area. Highest
probabilities would support snowfall amounts up to 2 inches, with
far southern portions of the CWA having a 30+% probability of 2-4
inches. A stronger digging short wave trof Monday night-Tuesday
could bring another period of light snow (< 1 inch) but the
probability is lower (20-30%), thus their is much less confidence
with this later round.
Beyond Tuesday we begin to see more notable differences in the LREF/
ensemble cluster analysis and deterministic models with evolution of
the large scale pattern. These differences and the uncertainty are
centered on the mid-upper flow and whether a long wave trof and
broadly cyclonic flow will be maintained, or the flow will
temporarily flatten and become quasi-zonal for several days followed
by renewed equatorward digging and development of a deep longwave.
How this evolution plays out will impact the longevity of below
normal temperatures and magnitude, and the NBM temperatures bear
this out showing increasing spread in the distribution for both

A complex forecast exists through the remainder of tonight into
tomorrow across the region. Most of the area is in the warm sector
of a developing system with southeast winds and warm advection
showers and thunderstorms moving in over the next several hours.
Some of the stronger storms could have some small hail with them.
Ceilings should lower into the IFR range by morning area wide. To
the north at Quincy precipitation type is more complex owing to
the proximity of a surface front and colder temperatures. Expect
that even Quincy will warm above freezing and transition to rain
rather quickly overnight. Until then some light freezing rain,
sleet, and snow are all possible.
A cold front pushes in from the west during the morning to around
midday on Friday. This will shift winds to the west and gust 30 to
40KT with a sharp drop in temperature. Rain changes to snow as the
front goes through and there could be a brief period of moderate
snow. The snow ends after just a couple of hours and we transition
toward MVFR ceilings and strong westerly winds through the
remainder of Friday.

Accumulating snow is expected Friday into Friday night across the region with the highest amounts across northeast Missouri and west- central Illinois, particularly in the Winter Weather Advisory. Strong winds behind Friday's system has prompted the issuance of a Wind Advisory for the entire forecast area Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. Dangerously cold wind chills are expected Saturday night through Tuesday morning across the entire area with the lowest values across northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois.
