Early morning satellite imagery reveals that low clouds continue to
hang on across parts of the area, with the western edge of this
cloud shield remaining slightly east of the Mississippi River and
into the Ozarks. In areas to the west where clearing has occurred,
river valley fog has developed with some fog in other low lying
areas as well. While observations indicate that this fog has been
dense in some spots (as low as 1/4 mile), dense fog has not been
particularly widespread. However, there have been enough
observations this morning to at least maintain the current dense
fog advisory as-is, which encompasses the areas where most of the
dense fog observations have occurred thus far (generally
central/northeast MO, and west-central IL).
As we approach daybreak, surface high pressure will slowly move east
of the area, and breezy southwesterly low level winds will develop
as a result. This will gradually erode fog and cloud cover from west
to east through the morning, and should help to reveal the sun in
all areas west of the Mississippi River before noon. East of the
river though this process may take longer to occur, and there may be
some areas across Illinois that do not completely clear until mid to
late afternoon. Meanwhile, this flow regime will also promote
significant warming, and well above average temperatures can be
expected during the afternoon as a result. In fact, it will not be
out of the question for a few spots in central Missouri to top out
near 60 degrees before the day is over.
For those areas that do clear out today (which should still be a
majority of the region), enjoy today's sun because another round of
cloud cover is expected to build back into the area tomorrow. This
is because a shortwave will pivot into the area from the north
through the day, bringing with it a modest cold front early in the
morning. While this front will not have access to a quality moisture
source, there will likely be enough low level saturation to produce
both resurgent cloud cover and perhaps some waves of sprinkles or
very light showers , both right along the initial frontal boundary
early in the morning and again behind the front throughout the day.
Between the persistent cloud cover and cold front, temperatures will
also drop back to between seasonal averages and a few degrees above -
generally in the 40s by peak heating.

.LONG TERM... (Tuesday Night through Sunday)

As mid-week arrives, the synoptic flow pattern across the CONUS will
begin to transition into a highly amplified Omega-Block pattern,
with a pronounced ridge roughly centered across the Rockies and
central Plains. By late in the week, a large, negatively tilted
trough will then undercut this ridge after producing significant
rain and mountain snow across the west, eventually impacting the
southern half of the rest of the CONUS late in the week.
However, there remains considerable variance in the potential
outcomes locally as this pattern evolves, especially late in the
week. Between Wednesday and Thursday there is high confidence that
southwesterly low-level flow will develop yet again, producing dry
conditions and another warmup with temperatures peaking week above
average Thursday.
However, confidence decreases significantly Friday through the
weekend, all driven by significant differences in the timing, track,
and strength of the substantial upper low as it undercuts the
blocking ridge. LREF cluster analysis highlights this variability
well, albeit without many concrete conclusions regarding our
potential for precipitation. In short, clusters that produce a
stronger upper low with a more northerly track tend to produce more
rainfall across the region late in the week, while weaker and more
southerly lows tend to keep precipitation to our south. Ensemble
mean precipitation values remain very low throughout this period,
and a slight majority of ensemble solutions to tend to favor these
drier outcomes. This is also reflected in NBM PoPs, which maintain
percentages below 30% across our region. However, there are also a
non-trivial number of members that produce widespread precipitation,
perhaps as early as Friday, and there remains enough model support
that a solution in this vein cannot be outright discounted.
Meanwhile, this uncertainty is also reflected in very wide
temperature spreads Friday onward, with interquartile ranges of 10+
degrees throughout this period as well. There does appear to be a
slight preference for above average temperatures overall late in the
week, but this is far from iron-glad given all of the above.

Primary concerns for the 12Z TAF period continue to be patchy
freezing fog and low ceilings this morning, with another round of
low ceilings likely near the end of the period as well. Early this
morning, patchy freezing fog with LIFR visibilities and ceilings
has been observed at several terminals, most notably UIN/COU/JEF.
This is likely to continue for a few hours before fog diminishes
after sunrise. Meanwhile, low stratus with MVFR ceilings have also
been observed intermittently at St. Louis area terminals. The
western edge of the cloud shield is located very near these
terminals, so ceilings are expected to fluctuate through the
morning before skies clear prior to 18Z.
VFR conditions are then expected the remainder of daylight hours
at all major terminals. A cold front will bring more low ceilings,
potentially to MVFR or even lower, near the end of the period,
along with a wind shift to the northwest.
