(Through Saturday Night) Issued at 325 AM CST Fri Jan 26 2024 The Dense Fog Advisory will remain in effect this morning. While the current observations indicate only patchy dense fog at worst, there's still plenty of time before sunrise for visibilities to tank, so we feel it best to hang onto the advisory for the time being. Weak high pressure centered over the eastern Plains this morning will keep our weather dry for today. Temperatures will be similar to yesterday, mainly in the 40s under the continuing overcast sky. We may see readings few degrees warmer in the upper 40s to near 50 in southeast Missouri due to lack of precip. A broad mid-upper level trough over the Great Plains and eastern Rockies will shift east and deepen over the next 36-48 hours. This forces low level cyclogenesis over eastern Texas into Louisiana tonight, and the resulting surface low moves northeast through the lower Mississippi Valley into the Tennessee Valley by Saturday evening. Latest model guidance keeps the vast majority of the precip generated by this system south of our forecast area across far southern Missouri and Illinois. However, the GFS and ECMWF both show a broad area of 700mb divergence over an area of 850mb moisture convergence wrapping around the low level circulation...both indications of a well developed deformation zone. The def-zone moves through southeast Missouri and southern Illinois Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening, dropping another round of light rain in these areas, mainly along and east of I-44 in Missouri and along and south of I-70 in Illinois. Current forecast soundings show temperatures in the column will be too warm for frozen precip-- particularly in the lowest 3-4000ft, so I expect the precipitation to remain liquid through the event. Ensemble cluster analysis shows very little variance in the track and amplitude of the trough as it moves from the Plains across the Central and Southern U.S. Saturday, and 90+ percent of the ensemble members show zero snowfall, so confidence in an all-liquid forecast is high. (Sunday through Thursday) Issued at 325 AM CST Fri Jan 26 2024 The remainder of the forecast continues to look dry, with temperatures moderating during the work-week to 10-15 degrees above normal. Another weak surface high will drift from the Plains into the Mississippi Valley on Sunday in the wake of Saturday's low. This ridge will drift across the Central U.S. through Monday ahead of another short wave trough which is forecast to dig into the Mississippi Valley on Tuesday. There are timing differences between the deterministic models, and the ECMWF and GFS spit out a few hundredths of an inch of precipitation as this wave strengthens and closes off just east of our forecast area over the eastern Ohio and Tennessee Vallies. LREF cluster analysis shows 4 clusters with all 4 showing significant variance from the Grand Ensemble mean. EOF patterns are showing primarily amplitude variance with this wave but are also showing some position variance with the upstream upper level ridge. Even though the majority of the ensemble members are dry (65% plus) as this system moves through Tuesday into Wednesday, I have only moderate confidence in a totally dry forecast during this period due to the aforementioned variance indicated in the cluster analysis. The upstream ridge will build from the Plains over the Midwest and Mississippi Valley for the latter 1/2 of the week, locking in the mild temperatures and dry weather. Carney && .AVIATION... By late this evening, will see visibilities lower back down to less than a mile at KUIN due to light winds, lingering low level moisture and cold ground from the snow pack. Otherwise, rest of the TAF sites will only see visibilities lower to around 2 to 4 miles in patchy fog.
