.SYNOPSIS...06/409 PM.
Periods of rain, mountain snow, and possible thunderstorms will
continue through this evening. A few hours of moderate rain are
possible later Wednesday afternoon and night. Snow levels will
lower each day with mountain snow issues increasing. Gusty west to
northwest winds will form Wednesday and continue into Thursday.
Saturday through at least Tuesday will be dry and warmer.

.SHORT TERM (TUE-FRI)...06/917 PM.
***UPDATE***
The upper low has moved eastward and is over the San Joaquin Vly
now. The trof axis is running through LA county and will exit over
the next few hours. The NVA filtering in behind the trof has
greatly reduced the shower activity. Gusty NW winds are filtering
in behind the trof. The winds will be gusty but with gusts only in
the sub advisory 25 to 35 mph range. The NW flow will create some
upslope showers and with the colder airmass snow levels will fall
to near 4000 ft and travel across the Tejon Grapevine I-5 where a
winter weather advisory is in effect.
Looks a fairly if not completely dry day tomorrow with another
system arriving in the evening and overnight. This system will
only bring an additional half inch or so of rain to the area.
Will update the forecast to lower pops and clouds.
***From Previous Discussion***
More and more ensemble solutions are on board with a trough of low
pressure, currently just off the Alaskan Panhandle, zipping down
the west coast and through southern California on Thursday. This
system will be able to interact with the lingering moisture from
our current storm to bring one last band of organized precipitation
Wednesday afternoon and night. All areas should see about a 3
hour period of steady rain and mountain snow. Rain rates look to
peak around 0.25 to 0.50 inches per hour, highest in the
mountains. Some computer solutions show pockets of slightly
higher rates. On any other week, rain of this nature would not be
much of an issue, but considering that much of our area is water
logged, we might see some flooding issues in creeks and roads.
There is also a 10 percent chance of thunderstorms. Snow levels
lower down to around 3,500 feet with this band, so several inches
of snow is expected for the mountains. Winter Storm Warnings and
Winter Weather Advisories have been extended as a result. Some
showers will linger around on Thursday, but all areas should
finally see an end to the precipitation by Friday afternoon or
evening except for light snow on the north slopes into Friday
Night.
From now through Friday, additional rainfall totals of 0.25 to
0.75 inches are expected, with 1.0 to 1.5 inches in the favored
hills. Los Angeles County is the one exception, where additional
totals should be about double those numbers.
Temperatures will remain below normal through the week. Low
temperature will cool further through the week however, and some
interior valleys will approach freezing by Friday morning.
.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...06/408 PM.
Finally quiet conditions setup for Saturday through Tuesday.
Temperature should warm to near normal as high pressure settles in
aloft. Surface pressure gradients should turn offshore with weak
Santa Ana winds possible. Extended projections continue to show a
chance for another storm system for the end of next week with a
wide range of outcomes.

Thunderstorms remain possible through tonight. Any thunderstorms
can produce dangerous lightning and gusty winds.
High confidence in northwest to west winds will continue to
increase tonight over most if not all waters, including near
shore. These winds will persist through most of Thursday
(including overnight) at Small Craft Advisory (SCA) strength along
with SCA level seas, although a brief break is possible Wednesday
morning into afternoon. There is a 20 percent chance of low- end
Gale Warning conditions across the outer waters and in the Santa
Barbara Channel, including near the Ventura Coast, Wednesday
afternoon into late night.
For Friday and Saturday, moderate confidence in SCA conditions
staying confined to the typical areas off the Central Coast.
Seas will be building through Wednesday and Thursday. There is a
mixture of longer period (18-20 seconds), moderate period (12-14
seconds) and wind swell (7-9 seconds). This will create hazardous
waves near the coast, with a small chance of breaking waves at
the Morro Bay and Ventura Harbor entrances.

.BEACHES...06/204 PM.
A northwest to west swell will build into the area through
tonight, peaking Wednesday through Thursday, then lowering but
staying elevated Friday and Saturday. There is a mixture of longer
period (18-20 seconds), moderate period (12-14 seconds) and wind
swell (7-9 seconds). High surf is likely for the Central Coast
(12-18 feet) and Ventura Coast (7-10 feet) by tonight, with the
rest of the west-facing coasts possible (5-8 feet) later on
Wednesday.
Meanwhile the tides will continue to build. Observed tides are
running much higher than predicted (by around 1 foot), and our
tide models continue that bias through the week. As such, the
high tides have the potential of peaking in the 7.5 to 7.8 feet
range (7.8 feet would match the highest on record). With the
combination of these tides and the high surf expected, there is a
risk for Coastal Flooding for west facing beaches during the
morning high tides (7am to 9am) through at least Friday. Thursday
morning carries the highest risk with the best combination of the
highest surf and highest tides. While the flooding will likely
not be as severe as what occurred in December 2023, there is a
risk of widespread flooding of beach areas including bike paths,
parking lots, and vulnerable roads like near Ocean Beach and
Ventura.
