Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 408 AM PST Tue Feb 27 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Snow showers continue through the early morning hours across central and eastern Nevada. Look for gradual clearing today with partly sunny skies by this afternoon. Winds will be breezy to locally windy across central and northeast Nevada. Temperatures will be much cooler. Looking ahead, another strong storm system will be making its way towards northern and central Nevada Thursday through the weekend, with a return of strong winds and accumulating moderate to heavy snow through the weekend. && .UPDATE...Winter headline products were allowed to expire at 4am this morning as only isolated snow showers with little to no accumulation is expected. No other updates are planned. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 234 AM PST Tue Feb 27 2024/ SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night. Radar is depicting snow showers over portions of northern and central Nevada. These showers are expected to diminish later this morning with skies slowly clearing for the afternoon. Winds will be breezy to locally windy, especially in northeast Elko county. Highs today will be in the 30s and 40s. Quiet weather will continue tonight with cold conditions. Overnight lows will be in the teens and 20s. On Wednesday and Wednesday night, models are showing a flattening ridge over this time frame. The quiet and dry weather will remain over the area. Winds will be breezy in the afternoon, especially near the border with Idaho, but will remain below advisory thresholds. Highs will be in the 40s and 50s, with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s. LONG TERM...Thursday through Next Tuesday. Thursday, a strong upper level trough with an associated cold front and jet streak will move across Nevada. Impacts from this passage will be strong gusty winds across northern and western Nevada. Ensemble guidance is already showing Winnemucca airport having an 82% chance of seeing 50 mph wind gusts and a 50% chance of having gusts reaching 58 mph. As such, issued a high wind watch for Humboldt county on Thursday. Winds will precede any precipitaion, and may be in the form of valley rain and mountain snow north of the I-80 corridor in Humboldt and Elko counties. Friday, winds will remain elevated, with many areas seeing sustained winds out of the southwest 20-30 mph, gusting to 35-40 mph. Snow levels currently look to remain to high for all snow in valleys, thus valley rain and mountain snow looks to be the name of the game. Snow levels do look to drop below 6000 feet everywhere Friday night into Saturday as the trough axis begins to move over the state Saturday and Sunday. Valleys Friday can expect anywhere from a trace up to 3 inches across the highest mountain passes and summits. Saturday and Sunday snow levels remain well below valley floors (< 3000 feet) This will allow for bands of snow showers to produce rounds of accumulating snow on Saturday. Ensembles are showing Ely Airport having a 61% chance of picking up 2 inches of snow, and a 23% chance of 4 inches of snow on Saturday. Most valleys across Central and eastern Nevada look to see a few inches of snowfall on Saturday. With a trough axis over the state, filtering in the coldest available air, lows Saturday night will drop into the single digits and teens for most. Sunday, lingering snow showers will generally produce a couple tenths of an inch over some valleys of eastern Nevada. Lows Sunday night will be just as cold if not slightly colder, with clearing skies. Lows are currently forecasted in the single digits to teens. Some colder valleys may approach or dip below zero. Monday and Tuesday a ridge builds into the area leading to a brief period of quiet weather before the next potential system next Wednesday. AVIATION...Snow showers taper off over most of the region before 18Z this morning, with VFR conditions expected at all terminals the rest of today and tonight.
