Main forecast issues this morning are the potential for severe
weather late tonight and Friday morning, along with rather gusty
winds on Friday.

Temporarily fairly zonal flow across the Gulf Coast states, with a
shortwave streaming some high clouds across the area. A much
stronger trough was moving through the Intermountain West this
morning with the base of the trough near Las Vegas. At the
surface, high pressure had shifted well east of the area and was
centered over Florida this morning. Temperatures that had dropped
off during the evening have leveled off, with most of the area
reporting readings in the 40s and lower 50s at 3 AM CST.

The shortwave near Las Vegas this morning will move to Texas this
evening, and into the middle Mississippi River Valley by midday
Friday. Deep moisture ahead of the system is going to be on the
sparse side, with mid level RH values along the 20-30 percent
range. Additionally, forecast soundings indicate a 2-3C cap
between 800-700 mb overnight for most of the area. Can't rule out
some showers overnight, with any significant threat of thunder
holding off until very close to sunrise Friday. We do, however,
see a 3-6 hour window, where surface based convection has a much
better chance of occurring, as moisture and instability will be
sufficient, especially north of Interstate 10. The better threat
will be north of our area, but if a supercell can become organized
and sustained, the severe threat is there, with all 3 modes
(wind/hail/tornadoes) at least possible. Instantaneous areal
coverage isn't expected to be solid by any means, but over a 6-12
hour period, most areas will see some rain. The front will move
quickly eastward across the area, with most or all precipitation
likely ending by noon Friday. Most rain amounts are expected to be
well under one half inch.

One thing that will be pretty definite on Friday is wind with
deepening low pressure near Memphis Friday morning. Sustained
winds are expected to be 25-30 mph across most of the area by or
shortly after sunrise Friday with gusts to around 40 mph likely.
Will issue a Wind Advisory for the area for much of the daytime
hours on Friday.

Rather warm temperatures expected today, and ahead of the front
Friday morning, with upper 60s and lower 70s common. Temperatures
are likely to peak prior to noon Friday, with temperatures falling
through the 50s by sunset.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Wednesday)

Hope everyone enjoys the warm temperatures today and tomorrow
morning, because they'll be gone after that. Major cold outbreak
is expected early to mid week next week, with the coldest air of
the season. The coldest air is expected to arrive late Monday and
continue through Wednesday before moderating somewhat late in the
week.

Multiple shortwaves will be moving through the quasi zonal flow
across the southern states late in the weekend and early next week
with the best moisture availability on Monday. The arctic boundary
should remain to our north until perhaps late in the day Monday
with precipitation on Monday being rain. A very strong northern
stream trough will plunge southward through the mid Mississippi
River Valley Monday, shoving the arctic front off the coast.
Timing of the southward push isn't being handled well by the
global ensembles with wide temperature spreads in both ensembles,
upwards of 25-30 degrees F in many cases.

Temperatures by sunrise Tuesday are likely to be below freezing
across most or all of the area, with wind chills in the teens and
lower 20s. Freeze and/or Hard Freeze Warnings, and possibly Wind
Chill Advisories should be considered a probability for much of
the area Tuesday morning, and pretty much a sure thing Wednesday
morning. High temperatures will struggle to get out of the 30s
Tuesday in many areas. While some rather light wintry
precipitation can't be totally ruled out late Monday night or
early Tuesday, the bigger threat will be the unseasonably cold
conditions, with all 4 protection P's threatened in a good chunk
of the area (people, pets, plants, pipes), especially Wednesday
morning. Maybe some moderation in temperatures by the end of next
week into the following weekend, but even then, probably only
returning to climatological normals with highs near 60 and lows
near 40.

Would note that the NBM deterministic guidance is running below
the deterministic numbers from the GFS and ECMWF operational runs,
but there's certainly enough evidence in those ensembles to not
shy away from the current forecast from Monday onward.

VFR conditions will prevail through around or shortly after 00z.
Thereafter, cigs will drop with widespread MVFR to IFR conditions
by 02-04z. Winds will also strengthen through the evening and
overnight hours as a low pressure system approaches. Showers and
storms should hold off until after 06z. But introduced some
showers in the late part of the MSY TAF which goes through 12z.

With high pressure off to the east, onshore flow has returned.
Wind speeds will be on the upswing by late in the day. Small Craft
Advisories will go into effect this evening across all waters,
with a Gale Watch in effect starting at mid morning Friday through
Friday evening. Will need some sort of headline behind the Gale
Watch late Friday night, but winds drop off pretty quickly by
Saturday morning. Additional headlines will likely be needed late
Monday or Tuesday, as the arctic front pushes offshore.
