- Passage of a strong cold front early Monday brings blustery
  winds and cooler temperatures Tuesday onward.

- Enhanced to near critical fire weather conditions across
  central and western Nebraska through next week. Potential for
  critical fire weather conditions Sunday and Monday,
  especially from the sandhills into the panhandle

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 250 PM CDT Fri Sep 27 2024

Little change is expected in the weather pattern across central and
western Nebraska through the weekend with the remnants of Helene
acting as a block and high pressure surface and aloft over the
region. This will lock us into warm and dry conditions through
Sunday. Temperatures aloft will remain around the 90th percentile
and EFI/SoT guidance shows a good signal for temperatures well above
normal through the weekend, especially from I-80 northward. Ensemble
means show highs both days generally ranging from the mid/upper 80s
south of I-80 to the lower 90s up toward the Hwy 20 corridor near
the SD border. Even some of the coolest guidance down to the 10th
percentile shows highs Saturday and Sunday well into the 80s so
confidence in a very warm weekend is high. Overnight lows will also
be notably warm with readings generally in the 50s Saturday night
with even some lower 60s near Hwy 20 Sunday night which will be
close to 20 degrees above normal for lows. Sunday will also become
breezy as a strong cold front approaches from the northwest with
gusts 25 to 30 mph from the sandhills into the panhandle. The dry
and breezy conditions will be especially problematic for fire

As the remnants of Helene fill over the Mississippi valley, a
vigorous trof will move out of the PacNW and break down the upper
ridge as it sweeps through the High Plains on Monday. This will push
a strong cold front through Nebraska early Monday morning. As high
pressure surges down behind the front it will become quite breezy
with a signal for windy conditions evident in EFI/SoT guidance
mainly north of Hwy 2 and especially toward Hwy 20 where
probabilistic guidance show a 30 to 50 percent chance for gusts
of 40mph or more. Unfortunately it continues to look quite dry
with very limited moisture so no precipitation is expected to
accompany the front as it passes. The dry and windy conditions
will be especially problematic for fire concerns. See the Fire
Weather section for details.

Much cooler air moves in behind the front with potential for some
frost if the center of transitory high pressure building down from
the northwest can keep winds down enough Monday night and possibly
Tuesday night especially from the sandhills into the panhandle.
Tuesday will be quite cool with highs generally about 10 degrees
below normal as readings top out in the 60s. Otherwise ensemble
guidance is in good agreement developing a progressive zonal flow
regime across the US through mid to late next week with a series of
breezy systems quickly moving through. However aside from a
temperature resurgence with highs near 80 on Wednesday, the flat
flow will prevent an immediate return to heat with temperatures
reaming near normal into late next week. Ensemble guidance continues
to show very limited moisture with precipitable water values
trending into the lower percentiles Tuesday onward, so a continued
dry forecast through next week and the continuation of dry and
breezy conditions will keep fire concerns at the forefront.

VFR conditions are expected to prevail across western and north
central Nebraska through tonight. Light and variable winds this
morning become southerly this afternoon, at around 5 to 10kts.

The overall pattern will remain very dry through the next 7 days
with no wetting rainfall expected and many fuels are cured and
available to burn. Temperatures this weekend will be well above
normal with highs into the upper 80s and lower 90s. The hot
temperatures and dry airmass will create elevated fire weather
conditions as minimum humidity levels during the afternoon to drop
down into the teens, mainly from Hwy 83 westward. However winds will
be increasing with gusts of 15 to 20mph across fire zone 204 and
boost fire conditions to near critical Saturday afternoon.

Humidity recovery Saturday night will be poor from the sandhills
into the panhandle with humidity struggling to rise above 60 percent
through early Sunday morning. Concern starts to increase Sunday
afternoon as dry conditions persist but southerly winds start to
increase ahead of a cold front approaching from the west as the
upper ridge breaks down. Wind gusts 10 to 20 mph will be common east
of Hwy 83 but will increase quickly further to the west.
Probabilistic guidance shows a better than even chance for gusts to
reach 35mph from the western sandhills into the northern panhandle
with a 40 percent chance for humidity at or below 15 percent. Given
these probabilities, confidence is high enough to issue a Fire
Weather Watch for fire zone 204 from the western sandhills into
the panhandle for Sunday afternoon. Humidity recovery is poor
Sunday night and winds are expected to amplify as they veer around
to the north with passage of a strong cold front early Monday
morning, though confidence in overlap of low RH and gusty winds
is not high enough yet for additional fire headlines. Overall
anticipate Sunday afternoon through Monday will offer potential
for critical fire weather conditions at least across fire zones
204 and portions of zones 206 and 208 with consideration for
additional headlines if later guidance continues to support the
dry and windy solutions.

Not as windy Tuesday onward but still breezy with low humidity so
elevated to near critical fire weather conditions will persist
through the end of next week.
