.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Issued at 414 AM CST Fri Jan 12 2024

The main forecast concern in the short term is with snow
chances continuing this morning, then impacts from strong winds and
snow cover tonight into Saturday. As for the ongoing snow this
morning, did decide to extend the Winter Weather Advisory for the
north central counties until noon CT. System has been a little
slower moving than anticipated with the deformation setting up
mostly across north central Nebraska, extending southward. Trended
towards the RAP model as this seems to have the best handle on the
deformation setup and timing, anticipate most of the snow to be out
by noon.

A secondary impact from the recent snowfall will be the potential
for blowing snow/ground blizzard conditions. There will also be the
potential for some additional new snow accumulations around 0.5 inch
or less late afternoon and evening. Winds are expected to increase
heading into tonight with gust of 35 mph or greater possible,
however at this time confidence is low in blizzard criteria being
reached, thus have held off on any blizzard headlines with this
forecast. Once concern leading to the lower confidence, observations
over the last 12-18 hours visibility was generally around 3/4 of
mile or more with these fine, needle type snowflakes, with only a
few brief observations during the heaviest snowfall dropping to 1/4
mile. To meet blizzard conditions would need to be at a 1/4 mile for
3 consecutive hours.

As for temperatures today, did trend cooler as most models were in
consensus coming in a few degrees colder, which seems to be the
trend over the last several model runs, trending colder. Strong
northwest winds combined with cold high temperatures, only in the
single digits to low teens today will lead to wind chills as cold as
-29 degrees today. Then temperatures will plummet this evening as
air temperatures will be around 10 to 20 degrees below zero and
winds increase tonight, dangerous wind chills will reach -50 degrees
across the northern Sandhills.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Issued at 414 AM CST Fri Jan 12 2024

Frigid temperatures will continue through the weekend as a
reinforcing cold from will bring even colder Arctic air southward.
EFI guidance continues to lead to greater confidence that
temperatures may approach record cold for high temperatures on
Saturday. Some relief will come on Tuesday as the Low begins to
move eastward and a weak upper level ridge builds in across the
west giving some reprieve with highs in the 20s on Tuesday and
reaching the mid 20s to mid 30s by Wed. Another front may move
in Wed night and bring colder temperatures and a chance for snow
Thursday.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z SATURDAY/...
Issued at 1150 AM CST Fri Jan 12 2024

North winds will begin to pick up across the area, especially
by tonight. Areas of reduced visibility will develop due to
blowing snow. In addition falling snow is possible which will
further the potential for blowing snow. Widespread MVFR
conditions will prevail tonight. Ceilings lift on Saturday with
VFR expected to prevail by midday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and north
central Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...This afternoon and tonight.

Snow will continue through mid afternoon, across portions of north
central Nebraska with up to an inch of additional accumulation over
Holt, Boyd, Wheeler and Garfield counties. Gusty winds may also
contribute to blowing snow, especially in open areas. Be prepared for
slick roads and reduced visibility. Wind chill values will also drop
as low as -20 degrees this afternoon across north central Nebraska.
There will be additional chances for snowfall late this afternoon
through the evening, mainly over west central and southwestern
Nebraska. Light accumulations are expected. Winds become strong out
of the northwest tonight as an arctic cold front pushes through the
area. Gusts of 35 mph or higher will be possible and will lead to
blowing and drifting snow along with dangerous wind chills of
-30 to -50 degrees.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.

Brutal cold continues through Tuesday morning across the forecast
area. A Wind Chill Warning is in effect with wind chills as low as
-50 in northern Nebraska and -35 in southern Nebraska. Frostbite will
be possible in as little as 5 to 10 minutes for exposed skin over
the weekend.

Additional snow chances exist essentially each day through Monday.
Minor accumulations or a dusting will be possible Friday night into
Saturday. Blowing and drifting snow will be an issue particularly on
Saturday as gusty winds will combine with fresh fallen snow. Low
visibility will make travel hazardous especially on Saturday.
