.Short Term...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 241 AM EST Sun Jan 14 2024

Surface analysis early this morning shows arctic high pressure
centered over KS and OK. Deep low pressure was found over western
Quebec. This was resulting in cold northwest flow across Central
Indiana. Aloft, water vapor imagery showed a deep upper low over
Ontario and Quebec, with a large broad trough carved out from the
Rockies across the mid-Mississippi Valley to the New England. Radar
shows snow showers, associated with a departing short wave, exiting
central Indiana. Temperatures across Central Indiana were falling
into the single digits.

Today...

The main story will be the continued cold. Strong cold air advection
continues today as 850mb temperatures fall to -16C by tonight. This
will lead to a very cold day with temperature unable to rise above
single digits. A moderate pressure gradient in place will still
result in winds of 10-20 mph. This may result in wind chill values
through the day near -20F. Thus the ongoing wind chill advisory will
continue for these very cold conditions. Be sure to cover any
exposed skin if venturing outdoors today.

The broad cyclonic flow across the region is shown to become more
westerly today aloft. Models show little in the way of upper support
and no short waves passing through the day within the flow.  The
very cold surface high is shown to move slight eastward, but more
notable is the a ridge axis noted to protrude from the high and
begin to build across Central Indiana. Forecast soundings today show
a very dry column, as expected with this arctic airmass. However A
thin layer moisture and saturation is shown near the surface beneath
a sharp inversion, indicative of some stratocu clouds Thus will
trend toward partly sunny.

Tonight...

Ongoing cold air advection is expected to continue tonight. The
surface ridging extending from the high pressure system to the west
will allow for lighter winds, resulting in slightly better
radiational cooling conditions. A bit of uncertainty regarding the
cloud cover forecast, which could have large impacts on cooling.
Forecast soundings trend toward a dry column by 12Z, showing the
clearing of a lower level stratocu deck. However moisture fields
show lingering lower level moisture. For now will trend toward a
partly cloudy sky, and this should lead to the coldest night of the
winter season so far. Look for lows in the lower single digits with
values near -5F possible in outlying areas. Again, with temps this
cold, the wind chill advisory will remain valid with wind chill
values overnight between -15F and -20F.

Monday through Wednesday...

Early next week will remain very cold with arctic high pressure
still near and the Polar Jet overhead. With the high's placement to
the SW, there will be no opportunities for WAA to remove the cold
air mass. This will likely result in highs near 10F with lows near
0F both days. A Rex Block over the Northern Atlantic is clogging the
low progression eastward keeping broad low pressure over the Mid-
Atlantic region into early next week. Luckily, CAA will help promote
height gains, filling the low and weakening the winds enough to keep
wind chill values slightly higher than today. The one caveat to this
is areas keep a sustained snow depth. In this case, air temperatures
are likely to be slightly cooler than currently forecasted

With the low still spinning the the NE, tightening pressure
gradients will create another mid-level jet around 3000m AGL. This
will create another marginal snow threat Late Monday and Monday
night. The bulk of the lift associated with this jet streak will
remain south of central Indiana, but even weak lift could be enough
to produce a few snow showers. Snow ratios around 20:1 will allow
for more efficient accumulation, and a few tenths to an inch of snow
will be possible.

Following this jet streak passage, the mid to upper level trough
will be far enough east to end the threat of snow showers for
Tuesday and Tuesday night

Thursday and beyond...

The Arctic high begins to move out mid week, with slight moderation
possible as surface winds veer towards southerly. This could allow
for highs back into the 20s by Thursday. This will be short lived
however, with another through passing through late this week, and
continued arctic air behind the trough.

The more apparent threat with the aforementioned wave will be modest
moisture return (dew points above 15F!), in combination with broad
lift. Ensemble guidance is still varied on timing, but the broadness
of the lift places central Indiana in a greater than 50% chance of
receiving at least some measurable snowfall sometime Thursday
afternoon through Friday morning. Given the potential for efficient
snow ratios and prolonged precipitation, more significant snowfall
(greater than 2in) is possible over central Indiana; however,
ensemble variance is too high to build much confidence in
forecasting snowfall totals at this point.

Impacts:

- MVFR ceilings expected through much of the TAF period.

 Discussion:

Radar shows a few thin bands of very light snow showers across
central Indiana. However these bands were not impacting the TAF
sites, MVFR Cigs remained at IND and LAF, while some clearing was
found along the ridge axis across southern Indiana.

MVFR Cigs will likely be a bit variable through much of the morning
as GOES16 shows BKN MVFR cigs upstream of northern Central Indiana
across Illinois. As forecast soundings show a trapped deck of
stratocu across the TAF sites through the day, we have used mainly
MVFR Cigs today. Some brief unlimited cigs will be possible at LAF
and BMG this morning, but given upstream trends, this will be the
exception and not the rule.

Some improvement to VFR Cigs will be possible tonight as the flow
aloft becomes less cyclonic. Thus have trended toward VFR Cigs at
that time.

DISCUSSION...

Arctic high pressure over the region will allow for wind chill
values to reach -15 to -24 much of today and tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

A prolonged period of frigid temperatures is expected to continue
through the coming week. Air temperatures will fall to below zero
for parts of the area Monday into Monday night. Wind chills may
approach -20 degrees for parts of the area.

The bitterly cold temperatures will raise concerns for ice jams
along area rivers and streams from late this weekend into next
week.
