The primary forecast concern through the short term is a powerful
low pressure system expected to develop today into Friday. This
system has the potential to bring heavy rain, strong winds, some
snow and very cold temperatures to central Indiana.

SYNOPTIC SETUP AND EVOLUTION

Currently across North America, the 250mb polar jet stretches
zonally from central California to the mid-Atlantic states. A few
short waves exist within the broader flow; one having passed by
quickly last night with gusty winds. Another is making its way
onshore in northern California and will be the feature of interest
going forward.

As the western shortwave rapidly advances eastward on the back of a
100-150 knot 250mb jet, it will gradually gain a negative tilt, and
subsequently trigger cyclogenesis in the lee of the Rockies over the
Texas Panhandle. This low then moves east-northeastward, quickly
strengthening as it does. By Friday morning, the low will be on our
doorstep across southern Missouri. The system reaches peak intensity
over northern Indiana or southern Michigan before the occlusion
process begins.e is lower, but still good, regarding
potential impacts including strong winds, heavy rain, and
snow/cold...the details of which will be discussed below.

WEATHER HAZARDS AND IMPACTS

A very cold continental polar air mass resides across the northern
Plains, and should move southeast on the back side of the departing
low. Cold air advection will be strong after the system's cold front
passes through with temperatures dropping rapidly into the 20s. Very
cold conditions are expected this weekend and into next week, which
will be discussed in the long term section below.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE

Guidance is in good agreement regarding the evolution described
above, and minor variation exists regarding system strength and
track. Variation that remains, however, is mainly confined to
details in the mesoscale. These features, while smaller in scale,
may be important in determining significant weather impacts across
the area. As such, exact wind gusts and precipitation amounts remain
subject to change.

NAEFS/ECMWF Situational Awareness Tables show anomalous parameters
across the board, exceeding the 99th percentile or even maxed out.
What this means is that there is high agreement within ensemble
guidance that a highly anomalous event is likely to occur. For
instance, sea-level pressure is at a minimum for the climatological
percentile indicating that record low pressure is possible. And
indeed, should pressures fall below 982mb (a record that was set at
Indy earlier this week), a new record low pressure would be
achieved. The majority of guidance deepens the system into the 970
to 980mb range.

As such, forecast confidence is high regarding an anomalously strong
low pressure system developing and then moving across Indiana during
the day Friday. Confidence is lower, but still good, regarding
potential impacts including strong winds, heavy rain, and
snow/cold...the details of which will be discussed below.

WEATHER HAZARDS AND IMPACTS

Given the strength of the approaching system, potential impacts
could be high and widespread. As of right now, wind appears to be
the primary threat with this system. Despite an anomalously strong
850mb low-level jet (over 80kt),Rain is now being observed over SW
central Indiana, and is quickly expanding north. Wet bulb
temperatures currently support rain all the way up to the southern
portions of the I-70 corridor, whereas locations further north
have a much more ideal wet bulb temperature for snow fall,
currently reading at 35/29 T/DP. This will likely lead to a quick
transition to mostly snow fall along a line from Crawfordsville to
Frankfort and locations to the north and west.

Further east (including Anderson, Muncie and Winchester), wet bulb
temperatures also support a transition to snow, but a more SE wind
direction could lead to slightly less frontogenetical forcing for
weaker QPF rates, a slower onset of precipitation and therefor a
delayed snowfall transition in comparison to the region described in
the previous paragraph. For this reason, snow totals are likely to
be less in this area. Given some ambiguity, the eastern portion of
the Advisory will be kept for the time being, but confidence in
greater than 2 inches of snow in this area has waned. boundary
layer stability may inhibit these stronger winds from reaching the
surface. However, as the system's cold front swings
through...lapse rates steepen and strong winds aloft begin making
it to the surface. Additionally, the MSLP gradient is likely to be
quite strong by this point (Friday afternoon into the evening).
Per DESI, moderate to high potential for 50mph wind gusts exists
for the majority of our CWA (70 to 90 percent). Lower probability
exists for High Wind Warning criteria (58mph), which is mainly
concentrated north and west of Indianapolis. Still, probability of
achieving 58mph reaches 50 percent Friday afternoon. We have
issued a High Wind Watch to cover the potential for strong wind
gusts up to 60mph. The axis of strongest winds will likely be
closer to the low center...and some counties may be changed to a
wind advisory or to a high wind warning, depending on the eventual
low track.

Secondly, heavy rainfall with minor flooding / ponding of water and
river flooding is possible. Rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches
will be common, with potential for pockets of 2 to 3 inches. These
higher amounts depend on embedded convective elements with higher
rainfall rates. Various CAMs depict elevated CAPE (up to 500 J/Kg)
rooted around 850mb, and this could lead to a few heavier
showers/thunderstorms.

Thirdly, snowfall and cold temperatures. Given our position in the
system's warm sector...this is anticipated to be less of a concern.
That being said, impacts from snow and ice are certainly possible.
The strong cold air advection behind the sharp cold front will
rapidly change precipitation to snow on the back side of the low.
Amounts should be low, since the system will be moving quickly and
wrap-around snow showers will be light. A coating to an inch or two
is possible, with the greatest amounts more likely the further north
one goes. Best chance of snowfall accumulations are generally north
of I-70.

As mentioned before, temperatures post-front fall quickly into the
20s and possibly into the upper teens by Saturday morning. Wind
chills into the single digits are possible Friday night through
Saturday. Residual water/puddles may become patches of black ice
overnight Friday. Should power outages occur during the strongest
winds, these cold temperatures could become quite dangerous.

.Long Term...(Friday night through Thursday)

Saturday and Saturday night...

The exiting system will still have an influence on central Indiana
on Saturday. The pressure gradient along with strong winds aloft
will keep the morning windy, with potential for gusts over 50 mph
continuing into the morning, especially northeast. Thus, the High
Wind Watch continues until 18Z Saturday. As details become clearer,
refinements will occur in the Watch and subsequent products.

Cyclonic flow will keep the threat for some snow showers around on
Saturday, especially Saturday morning. Will keep some chance PoPs
around. Temperatures will remain below freezing, with highs in the
20s.

Another shot of Arctic air will move in Saturday night, and this
could squeeze out a little light snow out of any moisture that
remains. Will keep some slight chance PoPs, mainly Saturday evening.
The cold air will bring temperatures down into the single digits
above zero for low temperatures. Wind chills will fall into the 10
to 15 degree below zero range.

Sunday through Tuesday...

This will be a period of very cold temperatures as Arctic high
pressure remains in control at the surface.

A system moving across the southern USA may have enough forcing
aloft to bring some fluffy snow to mainly southern portions of the
area around Sunday evening. Uncertainty is higher than average due
to the strong high pressure's influence on the area. Will continue
with some chance PoPs.

Another upper disturbance could bring more light snow around Monday
night into Tuesday morning. Questions remain about moisture
availability and the continuing influence of the surface high.

Highs will be in the single digits above zero to the teens, with
lows from around zero into the positive single digits. Temperatures
will be influenced by cloud cover timing and any snow that does
fall, so these numbers may change.

Wind chills will be below zero, with readings down to around -15 at
times for portions of the area.

Wednesday and beyond...

Some moderation in temperatures may occur Wednesday and Thursday
with highs returning to the 20s to around 30, but confidence is
lower than average as models disagree on timing of the next Arctic
blast. They do agree though that another blast will arrive by next
weekend.

The arrival of the colder air will bring another chance for light
snow. For now will put that in on Thursday, but this will change as
the timing of the arrival of the colder air changes.

Impacts:

- IFR Conditions overnight deteriorating to MVFR and IFR by late this
morning.

- Strong low-level wind shear developing near daybreak and
continuing into Friday afternoon.

- Widespread IFR restrictions developing for Friday in rain.

- Gusty winds for Friday with peak gusts at 30-40kts

- Period of intense wind gusts likely for Friday evening with gusts
in excess of 45kts

Discussion:

A deepening area of low pressure will push toward Central Indiana
overnight. The low will pass across the state on Friday afternoon,
before exiting to the northeast on Friday night and early Saturday.

Expect mid clouds to remain across the TAF sites much of the
overnight as the low approaches and clouds continue to stream in to
the area on SW flow aloft. HRRR shows an initial precipitation
shield arriving near 10Z-12Z, before an more substantial shield
arrives around 17Z. Thus have used periods of prevailing rain in the
tafs through the day, with the heavier rain coming during the
afternoon.

All through this time, the deepening low pressure system will allow
a strong 850mb LLJ near 50 knts across Indiana and even higher
values found across KY. This will result in gusty surface winds
along with the presence of LLWS mainly due to speed.

On Friday night the low will depart northeast and a cold front will
push across the TAF sites. The deepening low will continue to result
in a very strong pressure gradient as cold air advection begins on
Friday night. Again this will result in very gusty winds. Wrap
around snow showers will be be possible, however it appears
uncertain how organized these showers may be. Thus have included a
blowing snow mention and VCSH mention on Friday night perhaps
limiting visibilities.

A potent storm system will bring strong winds on Friday into
Saturday. There is potential for 50 to 60 mph wind gusts,
primarily in the Friday afternoon to Saturday morning time
frame.

Some light snow will fall Friday night into early Saturday,
with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches expected. Snow may blow
around overnight Friday night, reducing visibility. Slick spots
may develop on roads.

A prolonged period of frigid temperatures are expected Saturday
night into next week. Air temperatures will fall to below zero
for parts of the area Sunday night and Monday night. Wind chills
may approach 20 below zero for parts of the area by Tuesday
morning.

The bitterly cold temperatures will raise concerns for ice jams
along area rivers and streams from late this weekend into next
week.
