.Lowland flooding is expected to develop along the upper Wabash this
week from a combination of previous precipitation, snowmelt and
additional rainfall on still frozen ground. Expected minor flooding
could be made worse by any ice jams that develop as river ice breaks
up with the warmer temperatures and moves downstream.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive

Wabash River, from Lafayette downstream to Riverton.
.Lowland flooding continues along much of the Wabash River, from
Lafayette down to Riverton. There is low potential for flooding to
develop during the second half of the week of January 28 at
Vincennes. The river is rising at all locations south of
Lafayette. Flooding could be made worse by any ice jams that
develop during ice break up, but this threat is diminishing due to
the amount of time air temperatures are spending above the freezing
mark.
River levels on the White River at Elliston, Edwardsport,
Petersburg, and Hazleton will be monitored for possible upcoming
flood warnings.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.
Flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood related deaths
occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges,

as long as Tuesday, February 6. Lowland flooding is either expected
to develop, or may develop, on the lower White River by Monday night
from about Edwardsport downstream to the Hazleton area. Flooding

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 1240 PM EST Wed Jan 24 2024 .Key Messages... - Dense fog to continue through mid morning, potential return later this evening into tonight - Becoming much warmer with multiple rounds of rain through the rest of the week. River flooding and ice jams are possible - More rain is expected late this weekend && .Forecast Update... Issued at 955 AM EST Wed Jan 24 2024 The forecast is going mostly as expected across Central Indiana this morning. A strong southwesterly flow pattern persists across the region with ample amounts of moisture advecting northward into the state. An elongated surface low stretches from Central Illinois southwestward into Texas. Temperatures are running a few degrees warmer than what guidance suggests for this hour, so have bumped high temps up a few degrees for most areas bringing the 50 degree line closer to the I-70 corridor. Expect rainfall rates to lighten up from southwest to northeast over the next couple hours as the best forcing for ascent and low level jet push off to the east. Deep low level moisture should still be present through the day resulting in low clouds, patchy fog, and areas of drizzle. There is still a thick 6-9 inch layer of frozen ground from the recent stretch of arctic air. With warm air flowing over a cold ground, advection fog creating low visibility will be an issue through the day today and tonight. While visibility may improve some through the afternoon hours as low level mixing occurs, expect visibility to drop below a mile at most locations again after sunset tonight. && .Short Term...(Today and tonight) Issued at 229 AM EST Wed Jan 24 2024 Rest of Tonight. No changes needed to the ongoing Dense fog advisory with most observations sites across central Indiana continuing to show 1/4 mile visibilities with road cameras across the area also showing the very low visibilities. The expected rainfall is slowly moving into the area with the heaviest precipitation expected after 12Z and will be discussed below. Today. The wet pattern continues as a surface warm front continues to surge to the north across central Indiana with a broad trough across the Central United States. This trough is causing the LLJ to strengthen which is advecting large amounts of Gulf moisture into the Ohio Valley with expected moderate to locally heavy rainfall to continue through the day today. Heaviest precipitation looks to remain to the south with good model agreement that the best forcing will just graze the southeastern counties. The main timeframe for precipitation will be through 3PM with drizzle continuing afterwards. Thick cloud cover and periodic fog will continue through the day today but expecting that the dense fog will end by 10AM with the arrival of heavier precipitation. There may be some residual dense fog near Lafayette which may require a brief extension but will make adjustments if confidence increases. Not much increase is expected for temperatures through the day today with thick cloud cover and surface WAA not quite as strong. Tonight Mild temperatures will continue into the overnight hours with the return of fog with the rich surface moisture still locked into place. Any residual snow will be long gone by tonight but with winds dropping to near calm, conditions will be favorable for radiation fog even with the thick cloud cover still in place. Don't think fog will be dense for much of the night but periods of locally dense fog look likely. Not planning a new Dense Fog Advisory at this time, but will continue to monitor trends. With recent rainfall over a frozen and mostly saturated ground, runoff will be high over the next 12 hours which will lead to rises across rivers and streams through tonight and into the long term period with the potential for flooding outside of any ice jams that form. && .Long Term...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 229 AM EST Wed Jan 24 2024 Widespread rain at times, ice jams and subsequent potential for flooding are the main concerns late this week and weekend as a pair of waves lift northeast across the Great Lakes and the Ohio valley within southwest flow aloft. Thursday and Thursday night... Models and ensembles in good agreement that a southern branch wave will lift northeast from the southern Plains to the southern shores of Lake Michigan by Thursday evening. Southerly flow off the Gulf will draw deep moisture and mild temperatures to central Indiana with PWATs from 1-1.25 inches or near the max moving average for late January and 850 millibar temperatures 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. A 40+ jet will nose in late in the day, just east of the area, over southwestern Ohio. In addition, a SW-NE 120+ jet will be over the area. The synoptic lift, warm advection, deep moisture and potential jet streak enhancement will support widespread rain on Thursday. Suspect QPF is a little on the low side because of the above. Regardless, the warm advection alone should allow temperatures to be well above normal with afternoon temperatures some 15 to 20 degrees above normal, or in the 50s. Both the rain and warm advection will lead to ice melt and likely ice jams and potential flooding. The Ohio River Forecast Center Ensemble River Forecasts support minor flooding on the Wabash by this weekend. Looking at my QPF and after collaboration with LOT, IWX and ILN, models, raised evening PoPs to likely Thursday. After that, the rain will quickly move out into Ohio as a cold front moves through from the west. Friday and Friday night... Surface high pressure and an upper ridge in the southwest flow will provide subsidence and dry weather early this weekend, albeit short- lived. That said, BUFKIT soundings suggest plenty of clouds will be around as moisture becomes trapped under an inversion. The clouds and weak cold advection should keep temperatures contained to the middle 40s to around 50, still well above normal. Saturday and Saturday night... A southern stream trough will become negatively-tilted as it moves from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley on Saturday. This will spin-up a surface low that will quickly track northeast across northeastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon to the Appalachians Saturday night. There is some difference in timing and how far north the surface system tracks which lends to lowered confidence on where the best QPF will be. But overall, the Saturday and Saturday night time period should see all or the bulk of the precip. Critical thicknesses and BUFKIT soundings suggest the rain could change or mix with snow Saturday night over mainly northeastern sections as the system departs. If there is snow at the tail end, accumulation looks minimal at best with low liquid to snow ratios. Sunday through Tuesday... Surface high pressure will be moving in late this weekend and provide dry weather. Would not rule out a few showers next week with waves embedded in northwest flow but with the best moisture to the west, over the Missouri Valley, will keep it dry with slightly above normal temperatures. && .Aviation...(18Z TAF Issuance) Issued at 1240 PM EST Wed Jan 24 2024 Impacts: - LIFR to IFR cigs and vis generally expected through the TAF period - Dense fog expected to redevelop overnight tonight Discussion: Low visibility and cigs persist across all of Central Indiana this afternoon. With the weather pattern remaining largely the same over the next 24 hours, expect these conditions to continue into the overnight hours and through tomorrow. Rainfall will become more sporadic this afternoon and evening, tapering off to areas of drizzle this evening into the overnight hours. Warm air advection over a frozen ground in addition to a saturated boundary layer supports IFR to LIFR cigs and vis due to low clouds and fog the rest of this evening and overnight. Expect visibility to fall back towards 1/4sm to 1sm overnight at most locations. Rainfall moves back into the region from the south late Thursday morning, which may work to slightly increase visibility. Have a slight improving trend at all TAF sites towards the end of the TAF period, however still expect sub MVFR conditions through Thursday. Southeast winds this afternoon will gradually shift and become southwesterly this evening then more easterly and northeasterly overnight as an elongated area of low pressure pushes northward toward the region.
