* Another winter storm will impact portions of the region Thursday
  night into Friday but has shifted farther north. There is
  increasing confidence in heavy snow north of the Illinois River
  Valley, while a sharp cutoff in snow totals will occur southeast
  where rain is expected to be more prevalent.

* Strong winds gusting 35 to 45 mph are expected behind the
  departing system Friday evening and overnight. Areas that do see
  snow accumulations will experience blowing and drifting.

* Bitterly cold temperatures will arrive this weekend and continue
  into next week. Temperatures will begin to fall below zero
  Saturday night followed by more widespread sub-zero temps Sunday
  night and Monday night. Wind Chill Advisories and Warnings will
  likely be needed.

Evening water vapor loop indicated a compact but potent shortwave
swirling across south central IA, while at the surface a 998 mb
surface low was analyzed over central IA at 7 pm. Regional radar
mosaic showed returns as far east as east central IL, though a
significant dry wedge below 700 mb was noted on the 00z ILX
sounding, preventing any snow from reaching the surface. This dry
layer is forecast to hold through the night as the system shifts
east, primarily impacting northern IL. A couple high resolution
models depict snow showers reaching as far south as the Galesburg
to Lacon areas from 10 pm to 3 am, and have confined 30% chance
PoPs to these areas. Otherwise, warm advection clouds and south to
southwest winds gusting 20-30 mph will dominate the bulk of the
CWA, leading to unseasonably warm lows in the mid 20s to lower
30s.

This afternoon, water vapor imagery reveals a compact shortwave
over eastern Nebraska which is progged to move across central and
northern Illinois late this evening and overnight. Light snow is
possible with passage of this wave which has trended slightly
further south compared to yesterday's model guidance. HREF 75th
percentile suggests a dusting of snow is possible as far south as
roughly the I-74 corridor though some of the regional models
(NAM/GEM) bring light snow down through the I-72 corridor.

Thursday night into Friday morning, a deep upper trough will lift
from the southern Great Plains across the mid Mississippi Valley
while at the surface, low pressure deepens significantly as it
lifts across central Illinois and the Midwest through the day
Friday. There has been a notable northward trend in the low track
which has cut down on previous snow forecasts and resulted in much
more rain across central Illinois. A few thunderstorms may even
be possible mainly south of I-70 as weak instability within the
warm sector is transported into portions of southern and central
Illinois.

900-800mb layer-max wetbulb temps from the GFS suggest that precip
will initially begin as snow north of the Illinois River and rain
south, but the rain/snow line will shift as far north as Galesburg
around midday Friday with almost all of the forecast area
experiencing rain at that point. Colder air starts to filter in
from the west behind the low through the remainder of the day
Friday, though after forcing has peaked resulting in periods of
light to moderate snow. Forecasted snow totals have come down
substantially for much of the area. NBM probabilities for
exceeding 6 inches of snow during the event are highest (50-70
percent) across the far northern forecast area (Knox, Stark,
Marshall counties) where a Winter Storm Watch will be hoisted.
These counties have the best potential to see mainly snow
throughout the entirety of the event with only a brief mix or
change over to rain. Further south and east, warmer temps and
longer periods of rain will cut down significantly on snow totals
during the day Friday with the main period of snow accumulation
being Friday evening and overnight within the deformation axis
where minor accumulations are possible.

Winds will be strong again with another deepening low lifting
across the region. Cyclogenesis will result in a strong pressure
fall/rise couplet with the latest GFS predicting 9-11mb/3hr
pressure rises behind the departing low. The corresponding
isallobaric response coupled with steep low level lapse rates and
an overall very tight pressure gradient will all contribute to
very strong winds across the region. Winds will peak as they turn
northwest to westerly Friday evening and overnight. LREF
probabilities of exceeding 45 mph wind gusts are in the 30 to 50
percent range roughly along and east of I-55 while the probability
of exceeding 40 mph jumps to 60 to 80 percent. Any falling snow
may remain lofted by these strong winds contributing to lower
visibility across the area.

A very cold air mass associated with a strong, nearly 1050mb high,
originating along the Canadian Rockies late this week will build
southeast across the mid Mississippi Valley over the weekend.
Below zero temperatures will begin to overspread portions of
central Illinois Saturday night and will be in place for most if
not all of central Illinois Sunday night and Monday night. A Wind
Chill Advisory for wind chills -15F or colder may be needed as
early as Saturday night. A Wind Chill Warming for wind chills -25F
or colder may be needed Sunday night and Monday night.
