.KEY MESSAGES...

*  A fast-moving weather system will impact the area tonight. Light
   accumulating snow (1-3 inches), increasing northwest winds, and
   plunging temperatures will create favorable conditions for
   blowing/drifting snow going into Friday morning.

* Bitterly cold air returns late tonight through Saturday night,
  with the coldest wind chills (-15 to -25) expected Friday night
  into Saturday morning north of I-70.

* Above normal temperatures and precipitation are favored going
  into the new week, though there continues to remain some concern
  for a light freezing rain event on Monday.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 326 AM CST Thu Jan 18 2024

Pretty tranquil conditions are ongoing early this morning with
temperatures sitting at seasonal norms (upper teens to low 20s).
Water vapor imagery depicts an upper shortwave trough approaching
the middle Mississippi Valley as of 3 am. Radar imagery depicts a
band of snow stretched from Havana to Lexington, which coincides
with a few layers of weak frontogenetic banding noted on RAP
analysis. Peoria ASOS, Bloomington ASOS, and a few mping reports
nearby the band confirmed snow is reaching the ground, but
elsewhere pretty dry low to mid-level dry air may be preventing
much of this from reaching the ground. The frontogenetic forcing
should work to further saturate the column over the next few
hours, which should allow some light snow or flurries to reach the
ground I-72 and north through this morning. Ultimately cut back
on snow amounts some through 12Z due to drier air eating away at
some of this with generally a 0.5" or less possible near/north of
I-72.

Another weather system will bring better chances (70-100%) for
accumulating snow tonight with the highest amounts being focused
north of I-72. This system is currently taking aim at the northern
Plains states, where winter weather headlines span over 1500 miles
along its track. We are included in that mileage, with the addition
of a Winter Weather Advisory for counties north of I-72 tonight
through Friday morning. The 18.00Z run of the HREF has snow
arriving west of the IL River as early as 5-6 pm then spreading
southeast later tonight. QPF ranges from a few hundredths of an
inch over southeast Illinois to closer to 0.15" north of I-74.
Snow ratios of 15-20:1 should easily allow snow amounts of 1 to 3
inches to be seen north of I-72, with around or less than 1 inch
south of there. HREF 1-hr snowfall rates generally range from
0.2-0.5"/hour, though some speckles of closer to 0.7-0.8"/hour are
noted for a brief time between 9 pm and midnight north of I-74.
Although these snow amounts wouldn't usually drive a snow
headline, strong northwest winds gusting to 35 mph and rapidly
falling temperatures will create favorable conditions for blowing
and drifting snow that will greatly reduce visibility and create
slippery roads conditions for the Friday morning commute. Wind
chills will quickly fall overnight as well, with values looking to
range from -10 to -20 by Friday morning.

Bitterly cold temperatures stick around through a good portion of
the weekend as Canadian surface high pressure fills in behind the
the clipper system. The surface high will settle into the Plains
Friday night and then the middle Mississippi Valley Saturday night.
Overnight temperatures Friday night will dip down into the single
digits above and below zero, with breezy northwest winds sending
wind chills as low as -10 to -25. Although winds will be lighter
Saturday night, ~1040 mb high pressure overhead paired with clear
skies should allow air temperatures to tank especially where a
snowpack will exist. Wind chill headlines will be needed for most of
the area Friday night and a portion of the area Saturday night.

Surface high pressure will meander east on Sunday, with southerly
return flow initiating a warm up going into early next week. High
temperatures should return to normal values (low to mid 30s) by
Monday, with well above normal values expected midweek onward as
upper ridging amplifies over the eastern CONUS. Further west an
upper trough will deepen over the southwest US and eject several
impulses northward toward the Midwest through the week, with the
first being on Monday. Strong WAA looks to send 850 mb
temperatures above 0C by midday Monday, though the GFS/GEFS
continue to indicate that surface temperatures will lag behind.
This would open the door for a light freezing rain set up across
the area. There does remain some differences this far out, such as
the ECMWF/EPS favoring a faster rise in surface temperatures.
After Monday, temperatures should be warm enough to support all
rain.

VFR conditions will prevail through the afternoon before
ceilings lower and light snow begins across the area this
evening. Based on latest RAP/NAM forecast soundings, have
dropped ceilings to MVFR at KPIA by 22z...then further east to
KCMI by around 03z. Snow will begin at at KPIA by 01z, then will
spread across the remainder of central Illinois over the next
couple of hours before tapering off and coming to an end
overnight after passage of a strong cold front. Winds will
initially be light/variable, then will veer to NW and increase
markedly after FROPA. Wind gusts will reach 25-30kt late tonight
into Friday morning, which will lead to blowing snow and
continued reduced visbys where the most significant snow cover
exists. At this time, it appears the I-74 terminals stand the
best chance at seeing a 1-3 inch accumulation, so have included
BLSN at those sites through midday Friday.

Additional more widespread snow will arrive tonight, bringing 1 to 3
inch accumulations. Northwest winds will gust to 25 to 35 mph by
Friday morning, bringing blowing and drifting snow, especially to
open areas. A winter weather advisory is in effect tonight.

Northwesterly winds will continue to gust 25 to 35 mph leading to
areas of blowing and drifting snow Friday. A winter weather advisory
remains in effect until noon Friday.

Bitterly cold wind chills will return Friday into Sunday. The
coldest wind chills will arrive Friday night into Saturday morning
when values drop to 15 below to 25 below zero.
