north to south longshore current. There is also a Moderate Risk
of rip currents.

* IMPACTS...Portions of Battleship Road and USS North Carolina
Road may become impassable. In downtown Wilmington, flooding
expands on Water Street from Orange Street to Red Cross
Street. The lowest portions of Water Street between Princess
and Orange Streets may become impassable. Flooding worsens on
the lowest spots of River Road and adjacent residential roads,
south of River Road Park. Route 133 at Little Mallory Creek
may be flooded. Highway 421 Truck near Carolina Beach Road
begins to flood. Check with local officials for any road
closures or impacts.

.SYNOPSIS...
With high pressure in control from the north, cooler and drier
than normal conditions can be expected through the remainder of
this week before temperatures and humidity return to normal
early next week. A coastal trough will bring shower and
thunderstorm chances for coastal areas Friday and Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Broad surface high pressure encompassing most of the eastern
half of the CONUS will maintain cooler and drier than normal
conditions through the period with a steady northeasterly wind.
Looking aloft, a shortwave currently diving down the backside of
broad troughing centered over New England will continue into
the Deep South on Thursday, potentially closing off as a weak
low just beyond the end of the period over Georgia. The main
effect of this incoming shortwave is an increase in convection
well offshore along a stalled front. Closer to home, the main
impact of this should only be an increase in cirrus clouds
emanating north-northeastward from these offshore storms, mainly
during the afternoon and beyond. This may limit afternoon highs
somewhat depending on the timing and thickness of these high
clouds, but generally expect similar highs to today in the low
to mid 80s. Morning lows should dip into the upper 50s inland to
low 60s south and east.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A piece of upper trough to the north breaks off and develops
into a separate upper low to the southwest Friday into the
weekend. At the surface, a coastal trough far offshore will move
towards the coast Thursday night into Friday while remaining
off the coast. This will lead to a sharp PWAT gradient across
the CWA Friday afternoon, with near 2" forecasted along the
coast and 1" or less along I-95 with a wedge of high pressure
inland. Therefore have pops 30-40% near the coast for scattered
storms with less than 10% for our northwest counties Friday.
Well below normal temps continue in the short term, with lows
near 60F Friday morning and low 60s Saturday morning and highs
Friday in the low 80s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Coastal trough lingers just offshore Saturday before
dissipating on Sunday. Moisture gradient appears to be a bit
more inland Saturday than on Friday, and so have nudged pops
just slightly in that direction. Pressure pattern gets a bit
messy/weak Sunday into early next week, and can see a few sea
breeze thunderstorms Sunday and Monday. Weak high pressure
develops at the surface Tuesday into mid- week with a mid-level
ridge to the west. Pops are minimal during this time, though
can't rule out isolated sea breeze convection. Below normal
temps Sunday return to near normal by Tuesday with typical
summertime humidity.

.AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the TAF period.
Persistent northeasterly flow will keep mist at bay through tonight
and abnormally dry air for this time of year should keep any
ceilings above MVFR through tomorrow morning.
Extended Outlook...Predominantly VFR through the week as
high pressure maintains control to our north. A stalled front
offshore and persistent easterly winds poses a risk for
restrictions due to passing low clouds and showers, mainly near
the coast late this week and over this weekend.

.MARINE...
Through Thursday...Steady northeasterly winds on the south side
of broad high pressure will persist through the period. A
somewhat tightened gradient between the surface high and a
stalled front offshore will lead to winds in the 10-20 kt range,
with some gusts potentially reaching 25 kts on Thursday.
Primarily ENErly waves will respond by rising slightly from 2-4
ft through tonight to 3-5 ft tomorrow, except in protected
waters west of Cape Fear. The dominant period looks to hold
around 5-6 seconds through tomorrow.
Thursday Night through Monday...Northeast winds remain slightly
elevated Thursday night and Friday around 15-20 kts with gusts
to 25 kts as a coastal trough far offshore moves closer to the
coastline. Seas will be 4 to 5 feet through Friday afternoon,
with a few 6 footers possible in outer coastal waters early
Friday. Northeast winds decrease in strength by Friday night,
remaining around 15-20 kts through Saturday before becoming ENE
10 kts or less Sunday into Monday. Seas 3-4 ft Friday night into
Saturday will continue to lower through the weekend and into
next week, with forecasted wave heights of 2 ft by Monday. Seas
primarily a ENE wind wave from Thursday night through the
weekend, with a SE swell joining the mix late Saturday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
High astronomical tides from the recent full moon along with
residual runoff from recent heavy rainfall, and persistent
northeast to east winds will keep tide levels elevated into the
weekend. Thus, minor to perhaps moderate coastal flooding is
expected, especially along the Lower Cape Fear River.
