.SYNOPSIS...
A very active weather pattern will continue over the next seven days
with multiple storm threats. Today's storm moves into the
Canadian Maritimes late today. Relatively quiet weather returns
to close out the work week. Another storm system crosses the
region this weekend. Colder weather returns late this weekend
and early next week with another storm possible by late Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
730AM Update...Low pressure is peeling away from the coastline
so dropped High Wind Warnings for southern Maine and New
Hampshire coastline. Winds are also subsiding across the
interior so dropped a majority of the Wind Advisories as well.
Currently the only wind headlines exist on the Midcoast and
Maine Foothills, as well as Coos County. Dropped all Winter
Weather Advisories, save for Coos County, as slush on the roads
have largely melted. Lastly made minor changes to Wind, Sky, and
T/Td to reflect observational trends and headline changes.

Our system continues today as low pressure moves through the
area. At this hour only Coos, Oxford, Franklin, and Somerset
counties are still seeing wintry precipitation as the rest of
the area has transitioned into the warm sector of the storm and
is now plain rain. This rain is falling on snow and creating
slushy conditions on roadways that will cause hazardous
conditions for the morning commute. For this reason I left all
winter headlines in tact for this package.

Heavy rain is also being observed in portions of the CWA and
with rapid snowmelt also occuring, this continues to pose a
flood threat. Please see the hydrology section below for
additional details.

Minor and locally moderate coastal flooding are expected as we
approach the morning high tide. The observations for the
Portland tide gauge that we are currently experiencing a 3 ft
storm surge with high southeasterly winds battering the coast.
Please see the coastal flooding section below for more details.

The front, currently located in central New York, will be
pushing rain and snow out of the area by this afternoon, save
for up in the mountains where cyclonic flow will lead to
upslope snow showers. Winds will remain gusty behind the front
as they turn westerly at 25-30mph. Skies will be clearing from
the southeast this afternoon as the low departs and weak
ridging builds in. High temperatures will be in the lower 40s
to the north and upper 40s to the south.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY/...
With partly to mostly clear skies south of the mountains
temperatures will drop into the upper 20s, with northern areas
still reaching the low 20s despite the increased clouds, owing
to fresh snow.

Low pressure fully exits the region by Thursday afternoon with
high pressure nosing in Thursday night. High temperatures will
reach the upper 30s and low 40s south of the mountains where
skies remain clear, and upper 30s in the mountains where flow
remains blocked and clouds stay banked up to the terrain.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Overview...

An active pattern continues for the foreseeable future as a
trough continues to deepen across the Contiguous US. A ridge of
high pressure moves through on Friday, and then the next storm
moves through northern New England Friday night and Saturday.
Colder air makes a return by the end of the weekend and
continues into next week, with another storm possible midweek
next week.

Details...

Upslope snow showers come to end by Friday as a ridge of high
pressure moves through New England, yielding the sunniest day
in the forecast period. By Friday night the next storm begins to
move into the area from southwest to northeast.

This storm looks quite similar in track and intensity to the
one we're experiencing now, but looks to be moving a little
quicker. Rain, snow, and wind will all accompany this storm, but
overall they look slightly less intense than the current storm.
Even still, snow is likely to transition to rain progressively
from the coastline toward the mountains with light to moderate
snowfall accumulations, 1-2" of QPF looks likely, and there's
the potential for at least advisory strength winds along the
coast. So the best way to describe it is a slightly toned down
version of today's storm.

Snow and rain look to overspread the area during the late
evening and overnight hours Friday night, with the steadiest
precip coming to an end during the late morning and early
afternoon hours. Winds peak around the time of high tide, and
astro tides will be at their monthly peak on Saturday. Coastal
flooding will be a concern again during the Saturday midday high
tide.

This system tracks northward and stalls near Hudson Bay,
sending modified Arctic air eastward into the Northeast. This
brings seasonably cool into New England by Sunday and continues
into early next week. Additionally, moist westerly flow likely
keeps upslope snow showers going across the mountains into
Monday.

Arctic high pressure remains to our southwest, with low
pressure to the north across central Canada for Monday and
Tuesday. This will keep a cool westerly flow ongoing, and is
likely to feature mostly cloudy conditions as weak shortwaves
pass through the jet. Another more significant storm is possible
again by Tuesday night and Wednesday. While still about a week
away, the storm has consistently been showing up on the models
for days now, and fits with the continuation of the active storm
track. There remains many questions about the track and
intensity of this system, but with more cold air in place there
is reasonable to suspect that any system would at least feature
snow in some capacity. We'll watch it over the next few days.

.AVIATION /13Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term...Still mostly LIFR/IFR and MVFR this morning with
ongoing precipitation, but conditions are improving toward VFR
today as snow transitions to rain and ultimately ends this
afternoon, the only exception would be KHIE due to terrain snow
showers continuing through the first part of Wednesday night.
Southeasterly gusts of 45-50 mph continue through this morning
at KPSM, KPWM, KRKD, KAUG and KHIE. These will gradually subside
through the afternoon.

Long Term...Any lingering MVFR ceilings at HIE improve to VFR
by Friday as all other terminals see mainly VFR through Friday
afternoon. Restrictions are then expected Friday night into
Saturday at all terminals with snow changing to rain, and
increasing southerly winds at coastal terminals, with IFR to
LIFR likely. Conditions improve Saturday afternoon, but HIE and
possibly LEB hold onto MVFR ceilings into at least Sunday. MVFR
to VFR conditions then look likely for Monday and Tuesday.

.MARINE...
Short Term...A strong low pressure system continues to bring
storm force southeasterly winds to the seas, as well as waves
15-20 ft. Hurricane force winds have been observed in the
eastern open seas. Conditions will improve through today and
tonight.

Long Term...High pressure crosses the waters on Friday, and
then southeasterly gale to storm force winds are likely again
Friday night and Saturday as another storm tracks west of the
waters. Westerly gales may then continue through at least Sunday
night behind this system.

.HYDROLOGY...
Heavy rain and snowmelt overnight will raise the risk of flash,
urban, and small stream flooding across southern NH and
southwestern ME this morning. Rainfall and snowmelt combined
will produce around 2 to 3 inches of runoff over frozen ground.
Rainfall rates up to 1"/hr, which will support flash flooding
especially in urban areas. Runoff storage is also limited as
numerous ponds and wetlands across the region are already
holding above normal volumes. Travel is expected to be impacted
with flooded roads in and around low lying, urban, and small
stream crossing areas. The snowpack is expected to hold from the
foothills northward, meaning less runoff in these areas. The
rain will continue do a fair job of ripening the snow
conditions and compressing the pack significantly by late
morning. Most of the snowpack is expected to melt out in the
flood watch areas apart from snow piles and in sheltered areas.

Mainstem river flooding is expected to be limited, and focused
within the flood watch areas. Should runoff amounts exceed 3" then
the potential for low end moderate flooding is possible, with a
focus on the tributaries to the Merrimack River in S NH and SW
coastal ME rivers. Looking ahead, the similar looking system on
Friday night/Saturday is less robust in terms of moisture
content. It could still bring 1-2" of precipitation, which is
expected to fall mostly as rainfall. This is not likely to be a
significant flood producer, however there is the potential for
renewed river rises. Areas impacted over the next 24hrs will
need to be closely monitored for renewed impacts this weekend.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Storm surge is already reaching between 3-4 feet this morning.
Current expectation is that surge will be a bit ahead of the
time of high tide from Portland southwest to Hampton...but
increasingly align with the tide as you reach the MidCoast.
Even without perfect alignment...there looks to be sufficient
surge to reach moderate flood levels at Portland with wind
trajectories favoring moderate impacts at Hampton at well. Per
typical surge model biases...expect water levels to remain
elevated longer than guidance indicates...which will allow for
warning level impacts despite peak surge arriving a bit early.
Also important will be wave impacts with 15-20' nearshore waves.
Significant beach erosion and moderate splash over impacts are
expected as well given the expected waves.

Morning tide at Portland is at 9:36AM Wednesday - 10.3ft MLLW.

Also be aware that a similar system looks to impact the region
Friday night and Saturday with astronomical tides higher (Saturday
tide at Portland 11.2 MLLW at 12:05 PM).  Clearly timing the surge
will again be critical...so please watch for later forecasts as the
details for this second event become clearer.
