Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A robust low pressure system will track across the Southeastern
States thru tonight bringing widespread rain to our area. Dry
high pressure will spread back over the region on Sunday and
allow temperatures to climb well above normal by mid-week.
Another cold front arrives with more rain at the end of the
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 100 AM: To some degree, still waiting on in-situ CAD to
really lock in. Sfc ridge remains over the East Coast, but as main
synoptic low has moved thru the eastern Great Lakes, MSLP readings
have largely fallen slightly under the ridge. Secondary low now
over Alabama and still on track to move to our south across the
I-20 corridor thru midday. Light precip has made it across most of
our CWA, with sfc dewpoint depressions largely shrinking. As far as
in-situ CAD events go, this one is certainly less than impressive,
with the dry air evidently keeping it at bay. However, pressure
rises are recently noted over central NC which is a positive sign
if you like CAD, and furthermore we still have yet to see the
best isentropic lift over the wedge, which should occur as the
low makes its closest pass in the 10-15z timeframe.

For today, a key element of our forecast remains the sharpening
of the wedge boundary south of the fcst area closer to I-20. Even
though the wedge does not appear especially strong in the guidance,
the precip lasts into the afternoon before tapering with the
passage of the low level jet and the better mid/upper forcing,
which doesn't provide the opportunity for the boundary to lift
northward. This has two ramifications. For the severe weather
potential, the guidance keeps us locked in with no sfc-based CAPE,
and maybe an outside shot at bringing something into the southeast
corner of Union County NC. So, altho shear will be very strong,
it will be very difficult to get any severe storms in the fcst
area. SPC has backed off with the Day 2 Outlook and that seems
reasonable, keeping only a Marginal essentially along and S/E of
I-85. For the flood potential, once again the QPF has dropped. The
better probability matched mean precip seen in the HREF sticks
closer to the boundary near I-20, and maybe into the Blue Ridge
Escarpment area where we already have a Flood Watch. The guidance
does not support expanding the Flood Watch, so it will be kept
intact. Temps will remain cool for the most part with the ongoing
rain. Bottom line...no changes in messaging.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 132 PM Friday: A positive tilt southern stream trough will be
in the process of phasing with a northern stream wave diving out of
the Great Lakes tomorrow night. The subsequent trough axis will take
on a neutral tilt through the overnight as it slides across the Ohio
Valley and into the Appalachians by Sunday morning. This will drive
a surface cold front through the area with the front forecast to be
pushing into the mountains by early tomorrow evening. Cold advection
will ramp up overnight and last through the day on Sunday as a
chilly airmass with a source region in northern Canada spills out of
the Great Lakes region. Any lingering showers east of the mountains
are expected to push out of the area by tomorrow evening with the
only precipitation being lingering showers along the spine of the
Appalachians. Decent low-level moisture pooled against the mountains
within a northwest flow regime will likely continue to foster
showers along the Tennessee border counties through the overnight.
Temperature profiles eventually cool as cold advection ramps up with
temperatures falling below freezing across the high elevations above
3500ft. Initially, with shallow moisture confined generally below
800mb, ice crystals won't be present with freezing drizzle/rime ice
favored. With time, as profiles continue to cool, a period of snow
showers will be possible through daybreak Sunday morning before
lingering shallow moisture finally gets scoured out by overwhelming
dry air. A light glaze of ice and up to 1 inch of snow will be
possible across the Smokies and northern mountains along the
Tennessee border above 3500ft.

The other concern will be for gusty winds, especially across the
mountains, late Saturday night through early Monday morning. Strong
40-50kt 850mb winds within the cold advection regime along with a
tight 5-7mb pressure gradient across the mountains will support 45-
55mph gusts, primarily across the higher elevations of the Blue
Ridge escarpment. The most wind prone locations, such as Grandfather
Mountain, may see gusts up to 60mph. Very deep mixing above 850mb on
Sunday afternoon will also help to mix down 30-40mph gusts across
much of the area, even outside of the mountains. A wind advisory
will eventually be needed across the mountains where the highest
gusts are expected. Otherwise, temperatures on Sunday will feel
chilly with highs in the 40s to mid 50s with breezy winds. The
boundary layer will stay well mixed Sunday night, but Monday morning
lows are still expected to fall into the mid 20s to mid 30s. By
Monday, the mean trough finally shifts offshore with the core of
cold air pulling away from the area as well. Temperatures will
quickly rebound with cold advection shutting off and highs returning
to the mid 50s to mid 60s beneath warming 850mb temperatures. 850mb
winds also weaken along with surface high pressure sliding into the
area from the west, which will bring an end to any gusty winds
Monday morning.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 218 PM Friday: Surface high pressure sliding across the Lower
Mississippi Valley will settle over the Southern Appalachians by
Tuesday morning beneath broad quasi-zonal flow aloft. This will
support at least one morning of efficient radiational cooling with
clear skies and light winds within a dry airmass. As such,
widespread upper 20s to low 30s temperatures are expected Tuesday
morning. An early spring frost/freeze will be possible for locations
outside of the mountains where impacts to an early growing season
may be realized. Thereafter, rapid airmass modification will
continue through late week with high temperatures soaring back into
the low 70s by Tuesday and mid to upper 70s by Thursday. Large
diurnal temperature swings are expected each day within the dry
airmass. The pattern becomes active again by late week with a fast
moving compact shortwave trough lifting out of the Lower Mississippi
Valley and into the Southern Appalachians on Friday. This will bring
rain chances back to the area Thursday evening into Friday, but
guidance depicts notable differences as to how the wave evolves.

.AVIATION /07Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Bands of -RA will traverse the region in
the first 2-3 hours of the period. Cigs remain low VFR to MVFR
at many obs sites at issuance time, with sfc wedge airmass still
relatively dry. Precip bands should promote saturation nearer the
surface and thus lowering cigs, although rain may taper off for a
time. Isentropic lift over the wedge will amplify nearer daybreak as
sfc low moves from GA toward SC, likely resulting in a short period
of RA to +RA and IFR vsby. Cigs will lower during this activity as
CAD locks in, and LIFR cigs are possible across much of the region
thru the morning hours. Westerly low-level cold advection will
develop behind the low, and improvement in cigs is expected from
SW to NE from mid-afternoon thru early evening, with VFR likely to
return to the Upstate sites by sunset. Have leaned slower esp at
KCLT/KHKY in timing the improvement, given CAD. Excepting KAVL, ESE
winds to start should back into the NE quadrant toward dawn, then
returning to SW as wedge erodes and finally NW with strengthening
cold advection. KAVL instead will remain in the S half until late
afternoon before turning NW; upslope clouds could result in variable
low-VFR to MVFR cigs from late afternoon into Sunday morning.

Outlook: Continued improvement is possible Saturday night, but
more likely on Sunday. VFR conditions return Sunday with gusty NW
winds. The winds may remain brisk until Monday, but VFR is expected
to persist until the next frontal system moves in circa Friday.
