.SYNOPSIS...
Warm high pressure lingers over the region today. A cold front
crosses the area late tonight through Monday, ushering in much
colder air. A second cold front by midweek could lead to frost and
freeze concerns across the mountains and portions of the Piedmont.
Continued dry weather and warming temperatures expected for the end
of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1020 am EDT Sunday: High pressure will finally loosen its grip
across the forecast area today. A short wave trough digging across
the Great Lakes/upper Midwest will tighten the gradient aloft and
push a cold front toward us from the northwest this afternoon. Warm
advection and increased downslope flow will raise temps another 3-5
degrees this afternoon, bringing high temps back above normal
everywhere. Short term model guidance indicates moisture and forcing
associated with the cold front will not reach the mtns until after
sunset, so expect another dry afternoon. This evening, moisture
finally arrives on a developing WNW flow aloft as the cold front
crosses the mtns. Forcing will be minimal with this feature, and
mainly limited to the low level upslope flow on the TN side of the
mtns. Precip probabilities climb into the chance range along the TN
border by late eve, but this looks like a quick shot with the front
and for a few hours thereafter. The QPF is minimal. The lack of
forcing should prevent the precip from reaching the eastern slopes
to any great degree, and expect no rain east of the mtns with the
front. Low temps will be seasonally mild with the front stretched
across the Upstate/Piedmont regions by sunrise Monday. Wind gusts
will increase after midnight at elevations above 4k feet, but not to
the point where an Advisory is indicated at this time. Still, there
is some concern for additional tree fall across the region.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 AM Sunday: A sharp temperature change will be in store for
the area, as a strong cold front ushers in the coldest air of fall
so far. This is thanks to a deep upper trough that will dig across
the eastern CONUS thru midweek. Monday will still be mild east of
the mountains, thanks to downslope flow negating the strong 850 mb
CAA. But temps will be noticeably cooler in the mountains. Temps
will fall into the 30s across much of the mountains Monday night,
and into the low to mid 40s elsewhere. There may be enough mixing
to limit frost potential in the mountains, with some patchy frost
possible in the sheltered valleys.

A very dynamic shortwave will dive thru the longwave trough
providing a surge of deep-layer forcing and reinforcing strong CAA
atop the forecast area. The latest guidance is trending a little
wetter with this wave, so expect an increase in clouds Tuesday
aftn thru evening. The 00z GFS is a wet outlier with QPF response
spreading out east of the mountains Tuesday evening. But most of
the guidance does have at least some NW flow shower activity. The
850 mb temps will fall below 0C, suggesting an advection freeze for
elevations above 3500 ft, and with the moisture, a few snowflakes
cannot be ruled out. But no accums are expected. Breezy conditions
will be possible, but gusts are expected to be below 30 mph anywhere
below the highest peaks. The clouds and winds again will limit
frost potential, with a light freeze being the bigger concern in
the higher elevations. Lows outside the mountains will be in the
upper 30s to lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 300 AM Sunday: The deep upper trough will shift east
of the area starting Wednesday, as the pattern remains fairly
progressive. The center of the cold sfc high pressure will settle
over the forecast area Wednesday night. So Wednesday will be
the coldest day of the week, with highs 10-15 deg below normal,
struggling to get into the upper 50s to lower 60s in the Piedmont,
despite sunny skies. Good radiational cooling conditions will allow
temps to drop into the upper 20s to mid 30s in the mountains and
mid to upper 30s in the Piedmont. So areas of frost can be expected
across most of the area, except for the Lakelands and urban areas
of Greenville and Charlotte.

From Thursday onward into next weekend, temps will gradually warm
back toward normal, as the cool sfc high pressure remains over
the region and slowly modifies. With upper ridging building in,
expect mostly clear skies and dry weather thru the period.

.AVIATION /15Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: VFR at all terminals through the period,
with clear sky and no restrictions. There is a small chance of fog
around daybreak at the usual suspects, but the chances are too low
to mention right now. After sunrise, the wind should come up from
the SW, with some gusts possible in the mid/late afternoon. High
clouds should invade late in the day and during the evening,
as a cold front approaches from the west. The front will make it
into the mtns before daybreak Monday. Model guidance keeps the
precip chances close to the TN border, so KAVL only gets a VCSH for
now. A wind shift from SW to NW will accompany the frontal passage,
which appears toward the end of the period.

Outlook: A cold front will cross the area early Monday, bringing
scattered showers and perhaps a few TS to the mountains, along with
a shift to gusty NW winds. These winds may continue into Tuesday
as the front stalls just to our south. Otherwise, a drying air
mass should result in VFR conditions through at least mid-week.
