.SYNOPSIS...
Northwest flow precipitation will continue through early this
morning along the Tennessee border. Winds will increase and become
gusty as cooler high pressure pushes into the region today, with
frequent strong gusts across the mountains. The high pressure
will maintain dry conditions through much of the workweek and the
eventual return of springlike temperatures Tuesday. Another cold
front will arrive on Friday, bringing the next chance for rainfall.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1230 AM EST: The CAD wedge is history, with last bit of low
stratus having eroded in the NW NC Piedmont in the last hour. Water
vapor imagery shows main axis of shortwave oriented along I-85,
within a larger trough spanning the northeastern quadrant of the
CONUS. Winds/gusts are ticking upward across the mountains as sfc
gradient tightens ahead of incoming high pressure. Enough wind
will persist across the area to ensure we remain mixed thru dawn
and likely free of any fog, despite wet soils. Seeing some radar
returns in East TN and near the NC border such that our mention
of scattered showers still appears reasonable. Sfc readings and
webcams suggest rain is already mixing with snow in some populated
areas in the mountains and a full changeover is likely in the next
couple of hours.

Gusts will increase somewhat after daybreak across the mountains,
and expand into the Piedmont after sunrise, generally peaking at
25-30 mph today in the lower elevations. Gradient aloft will amplify
as an embedded shortwave dives across the Apps and into VA/NC this
aftn/evening, with winds turning somewhat more northerly aloft
and helping to amplify CAA and promote mixing. Altogether this
will boost winds/gusts such that winds on some of our ridgetops
could reach High Wind Warning criteria. Presently this appears to
be isolated to peaks above 5000 ft, but for the morning package,
will evaluate whether an upgrade to Warning is needed in our
usual high-elevation areas (3500 ft or above). Despite some wind
continuing even in low elevations, temps fall a few below normal
across the area tonight with the CAA and with skies remaining
mostly clear; only a few cirrus returning invof jet streak at the
base of the upper trough.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 136 PM EST Saturday: A deep upper low centered over the
Alleghenies will translate eastward on Monday.  Low-level gradient
flow over the NC mountains will remain tight and amplified.
This pattern will continue through the mid-morning hours before
the pressure gradient loosens up and CAA diminishes sharply
going into Monday afternoon. Cooling will be somewhat offset by
a near due-west wind which will promote downslope warming east
of the mountains. Otherwise, upper heights will rise gently as
upper ridging sharpens over the Midwest...and conditions over
the Carolinas will remain dry and unperturbed through Tuesday.
In fact, forecast RHs on Monday will fall low enough over a
broad swath of the forecast area that low-end fire weather
concerns are to be expected. An approaching weak disturbance
will promote an increase in cloud cover Tuesday afternoon and
evening...but this should amount to little more than some
scattered cirrus.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 216 PM EST Saturday: A de-amplifying shortwave trough will
slide east of the forecast area Tuesday night and give way to
more flat upper flow to persist through Thursday.  An extensive
shortwave trough will glide across the Great Plains and arrive in
the Carolinas by Thursday afternoon.  An attendant increase in
low-level moisture and forcing will occur ahead of an advancing
baroclinic zone that will extend from the Ozarks all the way
to Lake Erie Friday afternoon.  The overwhelming majority of
probabilistic guidance depicts some surface-based instability
developing over the Carolinas Friday afternoon and evening...but
with the driving upper feature losing steam as it enters the Ohio
Valley, the kinematics don't look like a slam dunk for any severe
weather.  Perhaps enough shear for some organized convection will
be in order, but the ingredients necessary for a well-defined wind
or tornadic threat look lacking at this time.

Some ensemble disagreement crops up for Saturday and beyond.
The dominant forecast mode appears to be a complete frontal
passage resulting in drying on Saturday afternoon and beyond.
However, there's support from all three of the major global ensemble
systems for alternative scenarios - either a round of warm frontal
activation, or a general slowing of the boundary as it loses
its upper support over the Ohio Valley - either of which would
result in rainfall lingering beyond Saturday morning.  For now,
advertising diminishing PoP for the end of D7.  Temperatures will
remain some 10 degrees above normal through the period.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and sites other than KAVL: Restrictions have cleared out
following erosion of CAD wedge, but some shallow streams of cu have
been generated via the shortwave now crossing the terminal area. A
brief cig at low VFR to MVFR level could occur esp at KCLT and
KGSP, but not likely enough to warrant a TAF group. Excepting these
clouds, SKC will prevail thru today. Breezy WNW to NW winds will
continue this morning and will keep fog at bay. A few gusts will
occur but will become much more frequent mid to late morning, mainly
in the 20-25 kt range but peak gusts could exceed 30 kt. Continued
VFR tonight with gusts subsiding and a few cirrus returning.

At KAVL: Cigs will come and go in NW flow regime until low-level
moisture diminishes later this morning. Periodic MVFR will be
possible before dawn. By late morning skies should be SKC. Winds
will remain gusty through the period, strengthening this aftn and
evening as gradient reaches peak. Sustained 20-25 kt with frequent
gusts of 30-35 kt are possible in that time, and peak gusts of
40-45 kt are a reasonable bet.

Outlook: Gusty winds linger through Monday across the mountains,
with VFR persisting through most of the workweek.
