Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 618 AM CDT Fri Sep 6 2024 Updated aviation portion for 12Z TAF issuance .KEY MESSAGES... - Lake effect/instability showers are expected today across the entire region and the lakeshore tonight. - Hazardous conditions to small craft are expected through at least Saturday morning. - It will be cooler and breezy today and this weekend, with some frost possible in north-central WI late tonight into Saturday morning and again late Saturday night into Sunday morning. A Frost Advisory has been issued for north-central Wisconsin for the first round of frost potential. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 404 AM CDT Fri Sep 6 2024 Short Term...Today...Tonight...and Saturday An upper level trough will provide continued cloud cover along with the chance (20-30 percent) for isolated/scattered showers today as it pushes southeast through the western Great Lakes region. Highs today will be well below normal for this time of year, ranging from the upper 50s across the north to the lower 60s across central and east-central Wisconsin. The upper level trough will continue eastward tonight, allowing some clearing skies to advect in from the west. The only exception will be far eastern Wisconsin near the lakeshore where northerly winds will keep clouds and isolated showers near the lakeshore given pre-conditioning from eastern Lake Superior. The clearing skies will allow temperatures to plummet away from the lakeshore tonight, with lows falling into the 30s across north-central and portions of central Wisconsin, low 40s in the Fox Valley, and middle to upper 40s near the lakeshore. The cold temperatures later tonight may lead to some frost across north-central Wisconsin in the usual cold spots. Given the expected low temperatures will issue a Frost Advisory for north-central Wisconsin late tonight into early Saturday morning. High pressure will build in across the western Great Lakes region on Saturday, which will end any shower activity across the lakeshore. Mostly sunny skies will allow temperatures to recover a bit on Saturday into the lower to middle 60s. Despite the warmer temperatures, the highs will still be well below normal for this time of year. Long Term...Saturday Night Through Thursday Little to no impactful weather expected in the long term forecast. Surface high starts to sink to the southeast on Sunday with upper ridge building across northern Rockies and starting to approach the Midwest. Temps Sunday morning will be cool, but not as cold as Saturday. 850mb temps are about 6C warmer (around 7-8C) and surface winds around 5kts will help keep temps up, too. NBM probabilities only show patchy areas across northern WI with a 3-15% chance of temps less than 36 degrees. Therefore, think the potential for frost Sunday morning is fairly low. Will keep the mention in HWO for now, but overall frost is not a major concern. Otherwise, expect mostly sunny skies on Sunday with temps already starting to rebound into the lower and middle 70s. Next week...Western ridge continues to push into the Upper Midwest, but flattens at the same time. This will lead to a relatively progressive flow and temps AOA normal. Highs Monday already return to around 80 degrees. Highs will be in the low 80s through the week with lows in the 50s. Precip...Models continue to show subtle hints at a weak midweek shortwave, which could potentially produce a few showers one day. The next system/widespread precipitation event does not arrive until next weekend. && .AVIATION...for 12Z TAF Issuance Issued at 618 AM CDT Fri Sep 6 2024 An upper level low tracking through the Great Lakes will keep a mix of VFR/MVFR CIGs across the area today. Any breaks in the clouds to start the TAF period will fill in quickly after sunrise this morning with mainly high-end MVFR or low-end VFR ceilings expected most of the day. Partial clearing is expected later this afternoon and evening as slightly drier air works into the region from the west. Instability pop-up showers are possible at times today due to the heating of the day. As better mixing starts up later this morning, look for north winds to gust to 20 kts much of the day. Gusts will then subside toward sunset. && .MARINE...
