Overview: A large upper level low along the Pacific coast
(centered invof central California at 09Z this morning) will
track eastward across the Intermountain West (today-tonight) and
Rockies (Sat). An associated lee cyclone developing in Colorado
(today-tonight) will intensify and track northeastward into
western and central Nebraska (Sat-Sat night).. where it will
reach peak intensity (980-985 mb) in the form of a mature,
vertically stacked mid-latitude cyclone.

Today: Expect strengthening southerly flow as the MSLP-H85
height gradient tightens in response to upstream pressure falls
/lee cyclone development/ in Colorado. A Red Flag Warning is in
effect for the western half of the area (west of Highway 83)..
where southerly flow will be stronger and deep vertical mixing
will yield exceptionally dry conditions.

Tonight through Sunday: The track/evolution of the
aforementioned lee cyclone, per current and recent operational
guidance, indicates a more robust system (relative to what was
indicated 24-hr ago). A High Wind Watch is in effect for the
entire Tri-State area this evening through Sunday afternoon.

Strong, perhaps damaging, NW winds are expected on the southern
and southwestern periphery of the mature mid-latitude cyclone
Saturday evening into Sunday.. where forecast soundings suggest
a potential for robust sustained winds and gusts in the 55-60
knot range, strongest along/north of I-70.

Guidance suggests that heavy precipitation associated with the
maturing cyclone will largely be relegated to eastern WY and the
NE Panhandle. Even if locally heavy precipitation were to
develop on the west and southwest periphery of the maturing
cyclone (northeast CO and adjacent KS-NE border areas) late Sat-
Sat night, wintry precipitation appears unlikely.. i.e. this
system lacks an Arctic airmass tap/feed and environmental
temperatures (SFC to 850 mb) are progged to be well above
freezing (+5 to +10C).. warm enough that evaporative cooling and
melting are unlikely to affect a transition from RA=>SN (in the
GLD CWA, at least).

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

00Z Monday the area is under west-northwesterly flow aloft as the
upper low which brought active weather to the area over the weekend
becomes situated northeast - over eastern NE/SD and western MN/IA.
At the surface, the low pressure system pulling away will allow for
gradual relaxing of the winds. Another upper low moving through the
Desert Southwest throughout the day Monday will have flow aloft
backing towards the southwest. This system will re-introduce chances
for rain showers from Monday evening through Wednesday, generally to
around 20-40%, highest across southern portions. Current forecast
position of the system looks to concentrate majority of
precipitation well to our south; as such, amounts for the CWA are
expected to be minimal, around a few hundredths to near a tenth of
an inch or so. Some ensemble members do hint at a more northern
track, which if it were to occur, would increase amounts at least
for parts of the area - will continue to monitor. During the latter
part of the work week flow aloft veers towards the north-northwest
as the low progresses eastward and upstream ridging builds in,
allowing for a warming/drying trend.

Temperatures during the long term period are forecast to start out
near to below normal with highs in the middle 50s to middle 60s and
lows in the mid-upper 20s to middle 30s, climbing near to above
normal with highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s to near 40 by mid
week.

winds gusting up to 30kts at taf issuance will increase a bit

15z veer to the southwest with similar gusts.

KMCK...sub VFR visibilities due to wildfire smoke are
anticipated through the rest of today with southeast winds

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT...

Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected across portions of
the area today, mainly west of Highway 83, where a Red Flag Warning
is in effect.

Smoke from wildfires in Oklahoma will impact areas generally east of
Highway 25 today with reduced visibilities and poor air quality.

A High Wind Watch is in effect for the entire Tri-State area,
beginning this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY...

A High Wind Watch is in effect for the entire Tri-State area through
Sunday afternoon.

A cold front will sweep eastward across the area on Saturday. A few
thunderstorms may develop along the front in northwest Kansas and
southwest Nebraska Saturday afternoon. A brief severe storm is
possible. At this time, thunderstorm development, coverage and
severe weather potential appear greatest over central and eastern
portions of Kansas and Nebraska, generally east of Highway 283 and
north of Highway 6.

Some blowing dust is forecast Saturday, both ahead of and behind a
cold frontal passage, basically impacting the entire area at some
point during the day. Visibility reductions and poor air quality are
likely.

Blowing dust, producing reduced visibilities and poor air quality
is possible late Sunday morning through the afternoon for locations
generally north of a line from Flager to Leoti.
