Have went ahead and upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Warning
for the counties that enough confidence in heavy snow and blowing
snow will occur. Guidance still continues to favor the northern
track with the higher snow amounts for the area.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday Night) Issued at 502 AM MST

Main points for the short term:
1. A Winter Storm Warning in the east has been issued while a Winter
Storm Watch has been expanded for Monday morning through early
Tuesday morning.
2. Snowfall accumulations of 2-8 inches expected, more is possible.
3. Gusty winds Monday with the snow will lead to blowing snow and
potentially blizzard conditions.
4. Cold wind chills expected Tuesday morning, mainly in the west.
Clouds are moving in from the west as the ridge we had overnight
moves on to the east and out of the area. Mostly cloudy to overcast
skies will continue to move east over the area today and prevail
until Monday night. Highs today will only reach the mid 30s to low
40s.
Today, an upper-level longwave trough will be moving over the
western CONUS and over the Tri-State area tonight. This will allow a
lee low to form in the lower-levels Sunday afternoon somewhere
around the Four Corners region. The low will create a strong LLJ
overnight and force additional moisture into the Tri-State area,
ahead of the cold front.
The NAM is still showing small areas of patchy fog forming tonight,
but overall confidence in fog has fallen sharply. The reduction
in confidence is due to winds overnight coming from a more
southwesterly direction and not southeasterly. Impactful freezing
fog is not currently anticipated.
Most longer range and ensemble model guidance is still showing the
low taking a more easterly path. This is expected to keep the total
snowfall amounts to generally less than 6 inches except in the
western portions of the CWA where up to 10 inches of snow would be
possible. Short range models, including the NAM and other CAMS, have
the low moving over the southeastern fringes of the CWA at a
slower pace. This path would lead to 6-9 inches of snow falling
across most of the CWA, with only Dundy and Yuma counties not
seeing 5 or more inches of snow. This forecast shift did have a
massive northwesterly shift of the main QPF, which causes
hesitation in adopting the new short range guidance. If the next
few runs of guidance continue this trend and the higher QPF
amounts do stay over the heart of the Goodland CWA, then
confidence will greatly increase with snowfall placement. Also,
CIPS analog guidance does have a couple of previous systems that
are very similar to what the short range guidance is showing. If
the short range models are correct CIPS guidance suggests up to a
foot of snow is possible as well as blizzard conditions. This
potential is the main reason why a Winter Storm Watch was expanded
north into Nebraska. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for
the eastern CWA because both potential paths have this area
receiving 6 or more inches of snow. In both cases, the most
intense snowfall looks to occur Monday morning through the midday.
As the low moves through, precipitation is expected to begin around
0Z Sunday and last until early Tuesday morning. Nearly all of our
precipitation will be from wrap-around moisture. This means it will
be coming from the north/northeast and could begin before the cold
FROPA. The warmer temperatures, especially in the eastern CWA, look
to cause some rain to fall ahead of the FROPA. Locations east of
highway 83 look to experience light rain for around 6 hours before
snow dominates. There will likely be a brief rain/snow mix during
the transition phase to snow. The surface cold front is expected to
enter the northwestern CWA around 3Z Monday and be through most of
the area by 15Z Monday. Pressure rises will occur behind the cold
front, leading to northerly winds with gusts around 35-55 kts Monday
afternoon. The highest wind gusts (47+ kts) will be west of a line
from Goodland, KS to Leoti, KS. These gusts could last for around 18
hours, leading to blowing snow that will reduce visibilities.
Increased snowfall amounts and rates are also looking more possible
in this area, but consistency will be the determining factor. The
HREF is showing moderately strong signs that blizzard conditions are
possible for multiple hours. The is the reason they have been
included in the Watch. The blowing snow could start as early as 12Z
Monday and last through 12-15Z Tuesday.
The NAM had a very good handle on the current conditions at the
start of the forecast period, which is slightly concerning. The NAM
is showing multiple pockets of potentially convective snowfall. One
of those locations is in eastern Colorado around 18Z Monday, in the
prime location for the strong winds. These pockets seems to last
around 6 hours and suggest up to 2 inch per hour snowfall rates at
it's strongest points. This is based mostly on -8 to -15 Omega in
a saturated layer in the DGZ. Lapse rates and equivalent
potential temperatures also support this potential.
Late Monday night, as the system moves out, the sky will be clearing
up as the northerly winds continue. Blowing snow will still be a
hazard for locations that receive multiple inches of snow. The
clearing skies, especially in the western CWA, will allow for low
temperatures to drop into the single digits to mid teens farther
east. Wind chills around -13F to 0F are forecast for the area with
the coldest wind chills in the western CWA warming to the east.
The clear skies will persist Tuesday, allowing the area to warm up
into the mid 30s to lower 40s. The snowpack will keep temperatures
cooler in the southeast, but melting is expected to occur.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Saturday)

Main point: Arctic air mass will move into the forecast area toward
the end of the week. Highs may be in the teens with lows around
zero.
A short wave ridge will move through the forecast area at the start
of this part of the forecast. This will allow for a brief warm up
before the arctic air mass moves in. Immediately following the
short wave ridge will be a short wave trough. This may lead to
light snow occurring across the forecast area.
Behind the short wave trough the upper level flow will become zonal
before the next trough will move through, deepening over the
Southern Plains Friday. Accompanying the deepening trough will be
the arctic air mass.
Latest model data shows the ECMWF is colder than the GFS with this
air mass. The GFS has become deeper and colder with this trough
compared to the prior model run. The models seem to be in good
agreement with this trough considering how far out it still is.
Continue to think the highs for Friday and Saturday are too warm
given the air mass that is moving in. The probability for highs
exceeding 20F on these days has lowered for the northeast half of
the forecast area to 30%, but has increased over the southwest half
to around 70%. The GFS and ECMWF both have the arctic front well
west of the forecast area near the Rockies. However the Canadian
model has the front nearly bisecting the forecast area from west to
east. Based on the temperature probabilities, am beginning to think
the Canadian may be correct.
Looking more into the highs for Friday and Saturday, the 20-30th
percentile agrees very well with the Canadian model. This analysis
shows highs around 15F for both days. The Canadian is known to
perform well with cold air masses, which increases confidence that
highs will end up being around the 15F mark. Lows didn't change
much from what the current model blend has. The most noticeable
change is the lows falling below zero for the eastern third or so of
the forecast area.
Aside from the cold, there continues to be a chance for snow mainly
Thursday night and Friday. Given the dendritic zone will be close
to the ground, any amount of lift will be able to generate snow.
Latest guidance shows a couple inches of snow, which seems
reasonable given the strong lift that moves through quickly and
the very cold temperatures.

period and continue through at least the mid evening hours before
ceilings will slowly start coming down as the potential winter
storm approaches. Snow should start to develop a little before

period. There is potential for LIFR conditions due to the
combination of snow and wind, but confidence wasn't quite there on
start time of these conditions to introduce into the TAF at this
time.
