.KEY MESSAGES...

- After another day of above normal temperatures, a combination
  of cooler air and fresh snow pack bring temperatures back to
  our seasonal normals from Thursday through the weekend.

- Periods of light to moderate snow return to the region on
  Wednesday with accumulative amounts between 2-6 inches
  expected north of I-90. Falling snow along with slightly
  breezy winds could cause rapid reductions in visibility which
  will impact the evening commute.

- Confidence continues to increase in another round of snow moving
  through the region Thursday night into Friday. While the
  details are far from certain, several inches of snow remain
  possible especially along the Missouri River Valley.

The Short Term (This Evening/Tonight):

A mild and dreary day continues! Taking a look a satellite imagery,
a mid-level cloud deck continue to sit over the area with
intermittent pockets of light sprinkles/rain as a weak wave pushes
through. While widespread development isn't expected, the
intermittent precipitation will continue to spread eastwards over
the next several hours before diminishing this evening with little
to no accumulation expected. Otherwise, a temporary lull in activity
will occur overnight as light southerly winds become more light and
variable. Temperatures-wise, expect similar conditions to last night
as lows drop into the mid to upper 20s for the night.

The Long Term (Wednesday-Sunday):

As we head into the extended period, the main story continues to be
the Valentine's Day Snow. Taking a look aloft, mid-level
frontogenesis will strengthen ahead of another incoming shortwave on
Wednesday leading to the development of a narrow snowband. While
there is still some uncertainty on where the band will set up,
deterministic guidance continues to show the east-west band
developing over southcentral SD and pivoting northeastwards towards
eastern/southeastern SD. As a result, the Winter Weather Advisory
has been expanded to include our first and second row of
southwestern MN counties plus both Brule and Aurora counties in
southcentral SD. The advisory will now start at 16z on Wednesday
with an end time of 03z on Thursday.

Nonetheless, snow will accumulate rapidly underneath the band with
HREF guidance showing snowfall rates in the 0.50"-0.75" inch/hr
range with low confidence (30%-40%) in 0.75"-1.00" inch/hr rates.
Shifting gears to amounts, accumulative snowfall amounts are
expected to be in the 2 to 6 inches range north of I-90 with the
highest amounts expected along and south of the Hwy-14 corridor.
With temperatures expected to be slightly warmer over portions of
the Missouri River Valley and northwestern IA, any precipitation
that moves through will likely fall as either a light wintry
mix of rain/snow or just rain. Shifting gears to temperatures,
highs will vary across the area on Wednesday with highs expected
to be in the low 30s to upper 40s with the warmest conditions
expected to be along the Hwy-20 corridor. Lastly, the combination
of falling snow along with slightly breezy conditions (20-25
mph gusts) could lead to periods of reduced visibility and
hazardous driving conditions especially on the evening commute.

Looking into the latter parts of the week, confidence continues to
increase in another round of measurable snowfall moving through the
region from Thursday night through Friday morning. Looking aloft,
this set up will be very similar to Wednesday's system. However, the
difference is the enhanced area of 700mb frontogenesis will develop
over central SD and pivot southeastwards towards the Missouri River
Valley. As a result, while banding potential will be possible;
medium to long-range guidance diverges on the location and intensity
of the band which has led to some uncertainty. Nonetheless, a few
additional inches of snow will be possible underneath the band with
ensemble guidance showing low to medium confidence (20%-60%) in
snowfall exceeding 2 inches. Otherwise, temperatures will drop
towards more seasonal conditions heading into the weekend with daily
highs sitting into the 20s and 30s through Sunday.

Low VFR stratus continues to spread eastward of the I-29
corridor overnight. VFR conditions will prevail overnight with
light variable winds. Near and north of a passing weak front,
including at Huron and Sioux Falls, winds will shift northerly
by early Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, attention turns to deteriorating conditions
as stratus and light to moderate snow spread in from the west.
Prevailing IFR to MVFR ceilings should remain mainly north of
the I-90 corridor Wednesday morning, shifting further south and
east toward Sioux Falls during the afternoon and to Sioux City
Wednesday evening. Within the band of heaviest snow near Huron
on Wednesday afternoon, low IFR conditions are likely for a few
hour period with snowfall rates near or exceeding 1 inch per
hour.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for northwest Iowa, southwest
Minnesota, south central South Dakota and southeast South Dakota.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

A band of snow will develop on Wednesday morning and continue
through Wednesday evening, with the heaviest amounts occurring north
of the Interstate 90 corridor. At this time 1 to 3 inches of snow is
expected, with lesser amounts the further south you go.

There is a moderate to high, or 40% to 70%, chance of another round
of light to moderate snow from Thursday evening through Friday
morning. Gusty northwest winds will may cause patchy blowing and
drifting snow on Friday.

Rain is likely to transition to light snow Wednesday evening with
most locations seeing less than one inch of new snow accumulations.
The heaviest snow will near and north of Interstate 90 in South
Dakota and Minnesota.

There is a moderate to high, or 40% to 70%, chance of another round
of moderate snow from Thursday evening through Friday morning. Gusty
northwest winds will cause patchy blowing and drifting snow on
Friday.
