Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 1127 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2024 .KEY MESSAGES... - Moderate to high chance (40-80%) of snow into tonight. High confidence in periods of wind chills of 20 to 35 below zero Saturday morning through Monday. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 351 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2024 THIS MORNING/TODAY: Starting off the morning with temperatures in the single digits and teens. Light snow is beginning to move into areas West River, with a more focused band across southwestern SD, which will be moving east through the morning. This is due to the next next mid/upper trough trekking westward. Low level warm front precedes this low, bringing some relatively warmer air and WAA into the region into the early afternoon hours as the trough slides east. The best forcing via the WAA and frontogenesis around 850mb has shifted now to be along and south of I-90 during the morning hours, pivoting northeastward into southwestern MN/northwestern IA by the early afternoon. Thus, overhauled pops to better reflect the forcing, noting that much of the guidance is struggling with the anticipated evolution of pops today. Soundings indicate that we may initially struggle with saturation - especially in the DGZ - with many showing only a couple of hours of saturation. As mentioned in the previous discussion, ensembles continue to show low to none (25% or less) chance of any location seeing an inch or more of accumulation through tonight. However, deterministic guidance maintains the broad accumulations over our forecast area, with half an inch to 2". These higher totals are expected along the higher elevation of the Buffalo Ridge and along the MO Valley, where the better forcing resides. Locally higher amounts (2-3") are possible for the MO River Valley with higher QPF. HREF guidances keeps snowfall rates mostly near or below 0.5" per hour, with isolated and brief pockets of 0.5-0.75" per hour rates. Winds today into tonight remain fairly light (gusts around 20 mph), limiting blowing/drifting snow potential. Otherwise, lowered highs for today by up to 5 degrees F for areas east of the James River given the new snowpack and anticipated cloud cover, despite WAA in the area. Highs in the upper teens and 20s for most, although south central SD climbs near 30. TONIGHT: Snow tapers off this evening as the wave slides into eastern IA. Cold front and robust CAA dive into the area this evening through the overnight, bringing even colder temperatures. Decreased lows from the previous forecast a bit, again with the new snowpack and colder air moving in. Lows in the single digits either side of zero. Wind chills drop to the teens below. THURSDAY/FRIDAY: By Thursday morning, next wave is already ejecting out of the Rockies, running across NE ahead of the next deepening trough. Snow chances increase through the day Thursday from the south, as models begin to bring in the initial WAA. Deterministic guidance is widely varying in how quickly the wave moves in, and thus have overall left the NBM pops for the most part. Confidence is low in the accumulations during this time frame, but trends maintain the greatest chances for accumulations south of I-90 as the low pressure deepens Thursday night/Friday across the south central Plains. For now, greatest totals will likely line up near/south of Hwy 20, where there are moderate (40-60%) chances for 2+ inches. Leaned on colder guidance again for highs on Thursday, as CAA and northwesterly flow prevail in combination with the snowpack. Highs in the single digits continue with lows below zero. Breezy winds due to the tightening surface pressure gradient could lead to patchy blowing or drifting snow. Wind chills by Thursday night and early Friday fall to -20 F or colder. FRIDAY NIGHT ONWARD: As the aforementioned low moves east and deepens over IN Friday night, surface pressure gradient continues to compress leading to breezy conditions. On its heels is a northern stream mid/upper jet diving south. This keeps lingering light snow chances in place through the first half of the weekend. Low confidence in these details. High confidence continues in the bitterly and dangerously cold temperatures this weekend into early next week as the northern upper jet dives southward. We'll stay in northwesterly flow and CAA regime. Once temperatures drop below zero Friday night, most locations likely won't see temperatures above zero again until Tuesday - especially those east of I-29 where there is the most new snowpack. Although breezy conditions are anticipated through most of this period, even a light breezy will cause wind chill values to plummet, especially with temperatures in the teens below zero at night. Expect wind chills 30 below or colder. Coldest values will be Saturday night through Monday morning.
