Broad troughiness aloft will sag southward through Monday which will
result in continued very cold conditions. While winds are about 10
to 20 mph today, the pressure gradient will increase on Monday and
result in some gusts to around 30 mph at times. Given the expected
surface temperatures, wind chill values tonight into Monday morning
will remain in wind chill warning criteria. The challenge becomes
Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning as winds slacken a bit and
temperatures are not quite as cold, many locations climb more into
wind chill advisory range. Since winds remain a bit breezy Monday
night into Tuesday will not change the warning that extends into
Tuesday yet, but will need to watch these trends as school tend to
cancel or start late with wind chill warnings in place. No snow is
expected tonight into Tuesday.
A series of weak embedded mid-level waves continues Tuesday and
Wednesday. As with Monday's trough, we do not expect any
precipitation. The first set Tuesday turns surface winds westerly
and brings a push of WAA that helps break us out of the worst of the
bitter cold temporarily. Highs for Tuesday will be above zero!
Warmest temps will be central SD with teens for highs cooling as you
head east into the low single digits. Another weak wave Wednesday
continues with WAA as a surface high works in from the northwest.
Winds start out westerly but after the passage of a weak cold front
they become northwesterly and gusty. Wednesday will be the warmest
day for the week with highs in the low to upper teens, again with
the warmest temps over central SD. Wind chills will still be very
cold, minus teens to minus 20s.
Thursday and Friday, a more defined upper and mid-level wave brings
the next chance for precipitation. Moderate vorticity and CAA look
to be the main triggers, as there doesn't appear to be much for
instability. BUFKIT soundings indicate weakly negative omega
(positive upward motion) at the top of the DGZ. In fact, omega
appears to be weakly positive overall in the 0-3 km layer, meaning
sinking motion. However, soundings also indicate we are saturated
relative to ice from the top of the boundary layer throughout the
air column. Thus, we only need weak instability to trigger snow
showers. For areas west of the James River, a deep layer of
saturation in the DGZ (roughly from the top of the boundary layer
through 600 mb) indicate that though the probabilities for heavy
snow are low, the stratus should be efficient at making dendrites,
and will result in higher totals in this area. Though, the ensemble
probabilities of an inch or greater are only moderate, 70-90%. To
the east, colder temperatures through the column indicate less
efficient dendrite growth, and more of an environment favorable to
plates and columns which aren't as fluffy. Probability of an inch or
greater is less than 50%. Since the deterministic and ensemble
agreement on system evolution is still low, have decided to leave
NBM PoPs as they are.
We dry out as a weak ridge builds in aloft Saturday and a surface
high moves through from west to east. Winds become southerly with a
mid-level WAA push that begins a warming period for the weekend. By
Sunday, the 5400 line scoots back north into Canada and we finally
warm back to near or above freezing.
