.KEY MESSAGES...

-  Above normal temperatures are expected on Friday, with
   elevated to perhaps near-critical values in the afternoon
   near and especially west of the James River valley.

-  High probabilities (>90%) for rain arrive late Saturday
   evening into Sunday. Stable model trends allow for a higher
   confidence forecast. QPF amounts between 0.25-0.75" favored
   by Monday morning.

-  Advisory or higher level winds are expected early Saturday
   morning and then again Saturday afternoon into Saturday
   night. Winds associated with rainfall Saturday evening may
   exceed 50-55 mph at times.

-  High winds may lead to widespread elevated to critical fire
   danger Saturday afternoon. Any and all burning should be
   avoided Saturday, and caution should be used if performing
   field work.

-  Unsettled weather into early next week, with high
   percentages of cloud cover (>70%) anticipated for eclipse
   viewing on Monday.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 339 AM CDT Fri Apr 5 2024

THIS MORNING: Widespread cirrus continues to expand across the
forecast area this morning.  This increased cloud cover is holding
lower temperatures in the lower 30s.

TODAY:  A couple things have been evident the past two days.  First,
models are underforecasting afternoon high temperatures by a couple
degrees as we are still seeing the impacts of dry vegetation.
Secondly, afternoon dew points continue to fall further than the NBM
suggests as models are underestimating the depth of mixing. With
that in mind, have trended the temperatures up a few more degrees
towards or above the NBM 75th percentile and dew points much closer
to that of the RAP/HRRR.  With winds gusting over 25 mph at times
late this afternoon through the James River valley, this results in
some expansion of elevated fire weather conditions.

TONIGHT: Winds are expected to steadily increase through the
overnight hours as the SPG begins to tighten in response to
deepening lee-side trough development.  The LLJ will focus itself
through central South Dakota and Nebraska after midnight, with
considerable LLWS throughout the Central Dakotas into Saturday
morning.

SATURDAY:  A day filled with several concerns is on tap for
Saturday.  Primarily will be wind, as we should see a marked
increase in sustained winds and gusts shortly after daybreak along
and west of the James River as mixing increases.  Some elevation
areas may already see advisory conditions prior to daybreak, but a
widespread advisory is expected further east through the day.  As
noted earlier, sharp southeasterly winds may tap into a much drier
boundary layer environment over Iowa, along with a stubborn low-lvl
dry air layer layer around 850 mb. This will again result in
significant drying of the surface layer dropping RH values closer to
30% at peak heating.  See separate fire weather discussion for
further details on what might be an increasing fire danger risk.

Those aforementioned winds will increase sharply through the
afternoon with potential for 40 to 50 mph wind gusts at times in the
afternoon.

Further southwest, expectations are that a sharply forced
linear band of convection will develop across central Nebraska
into northern Kansas by mid-afternoon on the leading edge of
strong vorticity advection. As the upper low pivots NE into
central Nebraska, this band of convection will race towards the
Missouri River valley by 00z. Additional showery convection may
develop ahead of this stronger line of thunderstorms within a
wing of warm advection into the early evening. Have expanded the
probability of thunder further northeast in the evening. While
the greatest corridor of instability is likely to be waning as
thunderstorm reach the MO River valley, I would not rule out the
potential for a few stronger 60 mph wind gusts forced downward.
There remains only a modest inversion at the top of the mixed
layer as this band of rain continues moving northeast in the
evening, which given high cloud bases and sub-cloud dry air,
could result in some downward rushing gusts between 50-55 mph
into the evening. Considered a high wind watch for Saturday
evening, but not confident enough on potential to see those
higher gusts to issue ATTM.

SUNDAY:  We'll see quite a bit of low cloud cover, perhaps some
drizzle, and continued gusty winds into Sunday.  One thing to watch
for will be the track of the upper low in the afternoon.  A few
pieces of guidance track the upper low into northern Nebraska,
developing a surface low a bit to southeast of the upper low.  The
not quite vertically stacked upper low may develop an occluded
front stretching east through areas south of I-90 (or perhaps
closer to Highway 20) in the afternoon. If this happens, and
it's a bit "if", we'd have to watch for any potential clearing
along the boundary, which could boost low-lvl CAPE values
towards a few hundred J/KG along the front. The increased
stretching along the boundary could represent a very slightly
increased potential for a few funnels to develop (evident by
non-zero values of the non-supercell tornado parameter along the
boundary). It's a low-probability event, but something to
monitor. Further north, we should see a continuation of low
clouds, and scattered rain/drizzle into the evening.

MONDAY: The upper low is now favored to move a bit further north on
Monday, which will in return keep the greatest potential for any
lingering showers along or mostly north of I-90. Total 3 day QPF
amounts remain clustered between 0.25" and 0.75" through the
upcoming weekend. Cloud cover still looks quite extensive in the
forecast area for the eclipse. Temperatures rise towards the 50s,
but may struggle if clouds are stubborn.

TUESDAY-THURSDAY: Quiet conditions are likely through the middle of
the week as the Tri-State area remains split between the departing
upper trough moving through the Great Lakes, and secondary upper
trough crossing the Southern Rockies.  Outside of some increasing
cloud cover and potentially a few sprinkles by Wednesday, most of
the region will stay dry. Temperatures gradually warm through
the 50s and end up in the 60s by Wednesday and Thursday.

Main aviation impact through the period will be the increasing
winds tonight into Saturday. Southeasterly winds will begin to
increase from west to east through the evening and overnight
hours with gusts near or in excess of 35 kts in many locations
by daybreak Saturday. Any periods of a relative lull in surface
wind speeds could result in brief periods of LLWS with a stout
LLJ overhead. VFR conditions will prevail with plentiful cirrus.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Several concerns into the upcoming weekend related to
fire weather conditions.  Afternoon dew points have been lowered for
Friday afternoon, and deeper mixing may present the potential for
gusts to 25 mph at times through the James River Valley.  This
results in very high GFDI values in the afternoon along the James
River and Missouri River valley areas, with moderate values
elsewhere.  It should be noted that winds WILL NOT relax Friday
evening, but may continue to increase through the night.  Any active
planned burn in the late afternoon will only see worsening wind
conditions into the night.

Greater fire weather concerns are focused on Saturday.  Deep
southeasterly flow will develop strong sustained winds over 30 mph
with gusts to 45 mph at times in the afternoon.  Recent model trends
continue to lower dew point values in the afternoon, with forecast
adjustments now suggesting RH values may fall between 30 and 35% in
the afternoon.  This may be one of those situations where high wind
gusts may compensate for the higher RH values in the afternoon and
lead to critical fire weather conditions into the early evening. The
GFDI values are pushing extreme values for most of the area Saturday
afternoon, while the RFTI suggests only "elevated" conditions
approaching "critical" due to the higher RH consideration.  While
further coordination with local fire partners will be had on Friday,
will go ahead and issue a broad fire weather watch for a large
portion of the forecast area for Saturday.  This watch may be
expanded in later updates.

Low relative humidity values and increasing late afternoon winds will
lead to moderate fire danger through the area. Winds gusts will
increase through the night gusting towards 40 mph by daybreak
Saturday. Caution should be used with any planned burning activities
Saturday afternoon as winds will not weaken after dark.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.

Strong winds with gusts greater than 40 mph are expected throughout
the daytime hours of Saturday and will continue into Saturday night.
Wind gusts may exceed 50 mph at times Saturday evening as scattered
showers and thunderstorms move through. A few stronger showers could
even produce wind gusts over 55 mph Saturday evening.

Very dry grassland and brush, combined with high winds, and lowering
humidity values will lead to elevated to critical fire weather
conditions Saturday afternoon and evening. Outdoor burning should be
avoided.

Gusty conditions will continue through Sunday as scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms will be possible. Severe storms are not
anticipated at this time.
