Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 1048 AM MST Fri Mar 1 2024 .SYNOPSIS...A passing system will bring gusty winds, cooler temperatures, and chances for precipitation through the weekend. Fair weather returns Monday and Tuesday, with additional disturbances possible mid to late next week. && .UPDATE...Areas of low stratus clouds developed overnight along the higher terrain from Flagstaff northwest toward the Grand Canyon. These should gradually decrease through the morning. Southwest winds will increase today in advance of the large trough moving into the western states. Wind will be the main weather story over the coming weekend and Wind Advisories remain in effect starting Saturday morning. && .PREV DISCUSSION /457 AM MST/...A major low pressure system moving onto the west coast today will cause southwest winds to increase over Arizona today. It will remain mild and mainly clear, but look for wind gusts of 25-35 mph this afternoon and evening. Saturday through Sunday - the low moves slowly eastward, bringing further increases in wind speed to northern and central Arizona. Southwest winds of 25-35 mph with gusts 40 to 55 mph will be common through this period, especially from the Mogollon Rim and White Mtns northward. There continues to be some support for a period of stronger wind gusts of 60-65 mph in the downslope regions including Doney Park, I-40 from Cosnino to Winslow, Show Low, Vernon, Springerville-Eagar. The threat of higher winds in these areas is from late Saturday afternoon through mid day Sunday. If these trends continue, we will look at converting the Wind Advisory to a High Wind Warning for this period in these areas. The other story with this system will be cooler temperatures and a chance for precipitation. Shower chances will be highest for the Kaibab Plateau (70%), with 30-40% chances down to the Flagstaff area, mainly from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon. Precipitation amounts are forecast to remain light for most areas, with a few hundredths in the Flagstaff area up to 0.25-0.50" over the Kaibab Plateau. Snow levels fall from around 7000 feet Saturday evening to 5500-6000 feet late Saturday night into Sunday. Snow amounts under 1" except for the Kaibab Plateau where 2-5" are forecast above 7000 feet. Monday and Tuesday - dry and continued cool weather with highs slightly below average. Breezy on Monday, southwest 15-25 mph, then lighter wind Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday - the next trough is forecast to move from the west coast toward Arizona, bringing cooler temperatures and a chance of rain and snow. Precipitation chances are currently in the 20-30% range, but stay tuned for later updates. && .AVIATION...Friday 01/18Z through Saturday 02/18Z...VFR conditions are expected through the period with FEW to SCT low-level stratus clouds over high terrain and SKC everywhere else.
