Very busy past hour. Based on reports of 4 inches of snow since
6 pm in the Warroad, Badger, Roseau areas and what looks like
1-3 inches more based on obs up to Winnipeg felt good idea to
issue a winter wx adv that area thru 6 pm today. Woodlands MB
radar is down so not much help.
Also wind gusts 30 mph or higher range Langdon to Cavalier
behind slowly departing sfc low just just east of Hallock
causing widespread 1/2SM or lower vsby and may continue much of
the day due to 1-3 inches of fresh snow. So winter wx adv there
too.

Issued at 341 AM CST Thu Jan 11 2024
Upper low is located just east of Langdon ND at 09z and it will
progress east and gradually weaken today. Sfc low over Pembina
and also will slowly move east and be near Intl Falls/boundary
water region late today. Majority of the snow will be
north/northeast of the sfc low/upper low with 2-3 inches of
fresh snow after 12z Thu in Angle Inlet area with 1 inch or less
after 12z Warroad and Baudette. Elsewhere some light snow after
12z thru NE ND and NW MN as far south as Hwy 2 but minimal
accumulations. 925 mb wind today highest in the north valley,
esp north side over Langdon/Cavalier/Grafton region. Here is a
90 pct chance of wind gusts 30 mph or higher and this area is
highlighted with areas of blowing snow. Patchy blowing snow
farther south in E ND, but also little new snow fell south of
Hwy 2 in ND but 1-2 inches of older snow on the ground may move
a little.
West winds south of the low advecting in colder air and as temps
fall to just below zero in the Devils Lake basin this morning
wind chills will drop to the 25 to 30 below zero range and wind
chill advisory will be out thru 18z.
Now the big question in coming 24 hours will be how to handle
what turn out to be a long term wind chill advisory period esp
for E ND/RRV into early next week. Expansion on advisory likely
needed later today for tonight into Friday and possibly beyond.
Wind chill warning criteria only met for a time Sat overnight
into Sun AM in DVL basin. Our criteria is -40F and lower.
Also watching a storm system spread snow thru SE parts of MN,
Iowa into Wisconsin tonight into Friday. Also an upper level
wave will drop southeast into western/central ND Friday into
Friday night with some hints at area of light snow expanding
into central ND and possibly joining up with snow over eastern
MN and Wisconsin for a general area of light snow esp south and
west parts of the fcst area Fri night into Saturday. Grand
Ensemble indicates probs for 1 inch or more 10-15 pct in Fargo
and 25 pct in Wadena this period with prob of 2 inches or more
lower. NBM 4.1 probs for these amounts are a bit higher with 1
inch or more at 35 pct SE ND/WC MN. And some gusty north winds
too, though via ensembles higher wind gusts progged to be in E
SD, but still if we can get some snowfall in eastern ND, esp the
southteast part of the state, then enough wind potential to
bring potential for some blowing snow. Did not add it to the
grids yet but later shifts may want to. Will need snow as
snowcover in SE ND is not sufficient to give vsby reductions
without new snow.
Next week will see the core of the coldest air drop well to our
south and what is left is a broad upper low ove Ontario and
Quebec with short waves moving around it giving some light
snow/flurry chances next week. Right now for any one day chances
appear low and thus model blends kept it dry. As coldest airmass
moves out temperaures will moderate slowly.
