High pressure center has moved offshore the the coast of the
Carolinas. A wedge will continue to build in from the east today
through early Wednesday. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico has begun
to move up and over the cooler wedge this morning. The radar shows
some very light echos, but any precipitation falling out of the
clouds is having a difficult time overcoming a dry layer aloft.

The dry layer aloft will slowly erode today. Forecast soundings show
that patchy light rain, drizzle and fog will become very likely by
the late afternoon/early evening within the wedge. The wedge will
should expand slightly southward overnight...along with the drizzle
and fog.

The models are showing the wedge eroding on Wednesday. Not confident
on exactly how far north the wedge will retreat, since BL winds
remain light. Do expect the far NE zones to remain within the wedge.
Tuesday's high temps have the potential to be too high, especially
if the wedge doesn't erode.

The extended forecast begins with the wedge of high pressure loosing
its grip on NE GA and a large moisture plume extending from the TX
Gulf coast to the Mid Atlantic states. The wedge transitions to more
of a Bermuda like ridge allowing this moisture plume and incoming
frontal boundary from the Mid MS River valley to move across North
and Central GA Thu/Fri. All in all we are going to be in store for
some unsettled and abnormally warm/moist weather through Sat/Sun
morning.

The models have been fairly consistent over the past few days with
with respect to precipitation output and location. There have been
some minor differences with intensity and convective output but it
hasnt been that big a deal with the forecast process. As of right
now it looks like the more significant moisture arrives with the
2nd wave Wed night/Thu morning with PWATs climbing upwards of
1.6". Convective parameters are mild with CAPE around 500 J/kg and
sfc-500mb shear of just over 30kts developing through Thu/Fri
behind the initial warm front. This could indicate that a few
storms may become strong, but not expecting much in the way of
severe weather. For right now, the main threat looks to be locally
heavy rainfall with some flooding.

Forecast rainfall amounts through the week continue to be
unseasonably high. Current forecast 7 day totals range from 2.5 to 5
inches for areas north of a line from LaGrange to Athens. Locally
higher amounts are possible. The Weather Prediction Center has this
same area under a day 3 Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) and a day 4
Marginal risk (Level 1 of 4) of Excessive Rainfall.

There will be a second frontal boundary following directly behind
the first one moving across the area Sat. This next front appears to
be a bit more organized with decent moisture but still lacking in
instability. Will see mainly showers with isolated thunderstorms
across the state. The front clears the area by Sat afternoon/evening
but we will still see some precip chances with the wrap around
moisture through Sun afternoon. A cooler/dryer airmass finally moves
back in across the region Monday.

Temperatures will be well above normal Thu through Sat with high
temps expected in the upper 60s to even low 80s, and lows in the
50s and 60s.

Wedge will continue to support lowering ceilings and visibilities
in fog into the evening hours along with a return to drizzle or
light rain later this afternoon and tonight as isentropic lift
increases across the area. Exact ceilings and visibilities will be
tricky due to the influence/position of the wedge along with
patchy nature of the rain. Winds will remain mostly under 10 knots
and easterly through most of the period, although winds will begin
to veer to more SE very late in the period (particularly in the
longer ATL TAF period). Winds at ATL may become almost due S
toward the end of the TAF period, but predominant direction
should remain E of S.
