Early afternoon observations show southeast winds have returned,
with some gusty conditions noted from the Hill Country westward into
the southern Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande plains. Current
temperatures range from the upper 50s to mid 60s with some scattered
high clouds moving in from the southwest. Moisture return in the
form of lower level clouds is also noted along the Rio Grande.

Surface pressure falls over central New Mexico combined with high
pressure well to our east will serve to tighten the pressure
gradient across all of south central Texas. This will result in
continued gusty southeast winds for the evening into early Monday
morning. The only change we made to the existing Wind Advisory was
to add a few counties (Maverick, Zavala and Dimmit) as winds pick up
this evening. Otherwise, look for rapid low cloud development
beginning late this evening and continuing through the overnight
hours. In addition, the stout southerly flow will help generate some
showers across the Hill Country by late evening, with rain chances
expanding eastward into the I-35 corridor after Midnight.

An active weather day is still in store on Monday as a strong upper
low takes shape over northern New Mexico and the Texas panhandle. A
strong Pacific cold front accompanying this system will move into
the Rio Grande plains during the mid to late morning hours, then
make steady eastward progress across the remainder of south central
Texas during the afternoon. Immediately behind the Pacific front,
gusty northwest winds will develop initially over the Rio Grande
plains, then spread eastward as the day progresses. We will likely
need a Wind Advisory for a good portion of the area on Monday to
account for the gusty west to northwest winds behind the front.
While model data has backed off just a little with regards to wind
speeds, we still have some low end concerns for a brief window of
winds to approach High Wind Warning thresholds over Val Verde county
during the afternoon hours. Forecast soundings from the GFS show a
well-mixed boundary layer up to ~5k AGL around 20Z. This may allow
for some stronger winds to develop during the early to mid-afternoon
hours along the Rio Grande. The winds and dry air will also lead to
an increasing fire weather threat across the Rio Grande plains and
southern Edwards Plateau. Please see the below Fire Weather section
for more information.

Areas from the Hill Country eastward through the I-35 corridor and
coastal plains will see shower and thunderstorm development ahead of
the above mentioned Pacific cold front. The latest update from SPC
has expanded the Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) farther west to cover
the I-35 corridor from near San Marcos northward and also portions
of the adjacent Hill Country. A small portion of eastern Fayette and
southeastern Lavaca counties remain in the Slight Risk (level 2 of
5) area. While strong forcing for ascent and plenty of shear remain
in place, much will depend on how warm we can get ahead of the
front. Thick clouds will likely be in place through the morning
hours and this will limit surface heating. If we can manage to break
out of the clouds a little sooner, this will aid in the development
of surface-based convection. The latest hi-res guidance appears
relatively tame for most areas through early afternoon. However,
several hi-res members do show a line of convection developing for
areas east of the I-35/I-37 corridors during the mid to late
afternoon hours. While all modes of severe weather are possible,
damaging winds and perhaps an isolated tornado appear to be the main
severe weather concerns at this time. Rain chances will end for most
areas by early evening. The exception being near the Highway 77
corridor through Monday evening where models hang on to low end
chances for convection as the main upper trough axis approaches from
the west. Breezy to windy conditions are likely to continue Monday
night as overnight lows drop into the mid 30s to lower 40s.

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday through Sunday)

A strengthening and increasingly vertically stacked low will be
moving across the Mid-Mississippi Valley toward the Great Lakes on
Tuesday, with it's influence on south-central Texas gradually waning.
It will still be rather breezy in the morning here, and a Wind
Advisory may continue through about the mid-morning hours. However,
by the evening high pressure will be in control and winds will likely
decouple for several hours overnight. Thus, after a cooler-than
normal daytime and with very low dew points in the upper teens and
20s, a cold night is expected. Lows will dip into at least the 30s,
and some mid to upper 20s will be possible in the Hill Country. if SW
flow is slow to develop through the early morning hours Wednesday.

That SW flow, combined with ample sunshine, will allow for a quick
warm-up during the day. Highs in the 60s are forecast, with some 70s
in our southern counties. Even warmer conditions are forecast
Thursday and many areas will reach the low to mid 70s, with some
increasing moisture for the Coastal Plains. Our next weather-maker
will be loading up late in the week over the western CONUS, and may
looks somewhat similar to the system moving in tomorrow. For now,
have included some low precip chances over our northeast where
showers/storms may develop late Thursday night through Friday
morning. But there's a bit more spread between model solutions of
this pattern, especially with respect to timing of the system and how
long CAA holds on behind the front. As a result, the timing of the
next round of gusty winds remains uncertain. EC/GEM have the trough
axis over or even east of our area by 12Z Friday, which would mean an
overnight FROPA and windy conditions by morning, but the GFS holds
the axis back and keep the frontal timing during the day. Regardless,
another day of near-critical to critical fire weather will be
possible, especially for the west half of the region, and another
wind advisory could be needed.

Wide range of possible temperatures for Saturday, as the GFS keeps
northerly flow in place which could mean highs in the low to mid 50s
south. Meanwhile the ECMWF (and to some degree the GEM) has been
consistently producing a return to southerly winds by Friday night,
and is thus much warmer on Saturday. For now, have stuck with the
NBM given the uncertainty and no clear winner in the ensembles.

Chances for appreciable rainfall in the long term are slim, and most
areas won't see any at all. Yet another strong low-pressure system
could be in store by around the 15th, with the potential for a more
potent arctic front behind it. Aside from one or two stray ensemble
members, nothing at this point to indicate temperatures colder than
what we saw in the late Dec 2022 cold snap, but cooler than normal
temps are likely for the first half of the week.

(00Z TAFS)

A developing surface low pressure system across the Texas panhandle
will induce a strong southerly nocturnal low-level jet tonight. This
promotes increasing warm air and moisture advection across South-
Central Texas. Additionally, expect for low-level wind shear within
the lowest 2000 feet of the atmosphere during the overnight. Given
the warm air and moisture advection, Low cloud development will also
be expected overnight with ceilings lowering into the MVFR to IFR
range. Rain showers also begin to establish overnight and increases
in areal coverage into Monday morning over the central and eastern
portions of South-Central Texas, including the TAF sites along I-35
(KAUS, KSAT and KSSF). Showers taper off by or into Monday afternoon
with ceilings also improving back to VFR levels. At KDRT, rain will
not be expected and flight conditions should improve to VFR levels
around mid to late morning. Winds will be a bit problematic through
much of the period. Expect breezy/gusty south-southeast winds during
the overnight before winds temporarily lower as a Pacific front is
expected to move across the region. Winds will then shift out of the
west-northwest behind the front with speeds intensifying to strong
levels. Winds could be strongest at KDRT during MOnday afternoon and
into Monday evening for the I-35 TAF sites. Gusts in the 30 to 40
knot range will be likely at some points.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Return southeasterly flow is well underway across south central
Texas this afternoon. Gusty conditions will persist across most
areas through tonight, especially over the Rio Grande plains,
southern Edwards Plateau and Hill Country. With southeasterly winds
in place, excellent humidity recovery will occur tonight/early
Monday morning. A significant change in the weather will take place
on Monday as a strong Pacific cold front moves in from the west.
Very gusty northwest winds and drier air will move in behind the
front. It still appears the greatest area of concern will be the
southern Edwards Plateau southward into the Rio Grande plains where
winds will likely be strongest. Precipitation deficits and
freeze/drought cured fuels across portions of the Rio Grande plains
mainly south of Del Rio suggest some pockets of high fire danger may
develop within axis of higher winds. We have opted to upgrade the
Fire Weather Watch for the southern Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande
plains to a Red Flag Warning. The warning will run from 9 AM-9 PM
Monday. Later shifts may need to expand the watch farther east on
Monday pending the latest fire danger forecasts. For Tuesday, gusty
northwest winds and dry air will remain intact across the region.
Despite the cooler temperatures, elevated to near critical fire
weather conditions appear in store on Tuesday. We will need to keep
an eye on the Hill Country as stronger northwest winds and lower
humidities may align here. Winds will ease Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning. However, dry air remains in place as gusty south
to southwest winds develop Wednesday afternoon.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for South-Central Texas..

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

Strong southerly winds are forecast to create windy conditions
across the Rio Grande plains, southern Edwards Plateau and Hill
Country this evening into Monday morning. Sustained winds of 20 to
35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph are possible. Some of the higher
elevation sites over the Hill Country and southern Edwards Plateau
could see a few gusts near 55 mph. A Wind Advisory remains in
effect for the above mentioned areas from 6 PM this evening until
6 AM Monday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

A few strong to severe storms will be possible Monday afternoon
along and east of a Llano to San Marcos to Cuero line.

Strong northwest winds are likely mid to late Monday morning into
the afternoon across the Rio Grande and southern Edwards Plateau
and along and east of I-35 in the afternoon and evening. Gusts
between 45 and 55 mph are possible. A Wind Advisory will likely
be issued early Monday. The gusty winds and low humidity will
likely result in elevated to critical fire weather conditions. A
Red Flag Warning is in effect for Monday across portions of the
Southern Edwards Plateau and the Rio Grande Plains. Gusty winds
continue into Tuesday, although gusts will not be as high as those
seen Monday.
