After a quick review of the higher res and rapid refresh models this
afternoon, we decided to add Bexar and Comal counties into the Watch
as there was a noticeable uptick in rainfall amounts to what looks to
be about twice what was earlier assessed. This means large areas
expected to get around an inch as opposed to half an inch. Given the
swollen streams and saturated soils already, it made sense to bring
them into the watch area. PoPs were also boosted quite a bit, mainly
for this evening over the Hwy 281 corridor.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Thursday night)
Issued at 147 PM CST Wed Jan 24 2024

An upper level trough is entering West Texas this afternoon with
southwesterly flow over the state. A moist airmass remains over our
CWA. An upper level shortwave trough is generating showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the eastern half of the area. The main
upper trough will become more progressive tonight and another round
of showers and isolated thunderstorms will move from west to east
across our CWA. PW values will again be above normal along and east
of I-35 and this will mean a chance for locally heavy rain. Rainfall
totals of 1-2 inches with locally higher amounts will be possible
over the Coastal Plains between now and Thursday morning. The ground
there has been saturated from heavy rain over the past few days and
any additional rain will runoff quickly leading to flash flooding.
We have extended a Flood Watch for this area until noon Thursday. As
the upper trough moves to the east POPs will also move eastward and
gradually decrease. Showers should come to an end during the morning
Thursday. As the system moves away, clouds will decrease through the
afternoon Thursday. Temperatures will warm to near to above normal.
The warmer temperatures will be out west where skies will clear
earlier. Thursday night will continue to be dry and temperatures
above normal in the upper 40s and lower 50s.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through Wednesday)

Much quieter weather overall for Friday through the first half of
next week. At 12Z Friday, upper trough axis will finally be moving
into W TX, crossing our region late Friday night/Saturday morning.
This will spin up a sfc low that will send a Pacific cold front
across the area Friday night. Rain chances have decreased some over
the past few forecast packages, but some low rain chances remain
mainly for areas north of Austin and our US-77 counties Friday
afternoon and evening.

Behind the front, cooler temperatures are forecast Saturday, a bit
below seasonal normals. Breezy conditions will develop on Saturday
as well with 10-20 mph sustained winds areawide, and up to 25 mph in
northern areas. Some 30-35 mph gusts are likely as well. Some
locally elevated fire weather conditions will be possible near the
Rio Grande in the afternoon where RH will briefly dip below 30
percent. Winds will diminish through the evening, and with Ridging
building out west, surface high pressure will begin to settle into
the central CONUS. By Monday morning, decoupling combined with clear
skies will lead to cool lows, with freezing temperatures likely for
a few hours in low-lying Hill Country areas. We'll start a gradual
warming trend through the middle of the week with no precipitation
expected through Wednesday. The tail end of a positively tilted
trough could clip the region Monday or Tuesday, but with no impacts
to sensible weather expected.

Rain should pull out of all sites in the next 1-2 hours vith VFR
conditions likely to show up in the wake subsidence pattern. Then we
think the clouds and fog should return closer to daybreak and some
potential for dense fog. Skies should improve again quickly at DRT in
the daytime since not much rain fell in the area. Over I-35, it's
much more soupy, and it will probably take much of the day to dry out
the low clouds and patchy fog. VFR skies again should be common for
the late afternoon and early evening hours, followed by more low CIGs
and patchy fog later in the evening.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for South-Central Texas..

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

A Marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather exists through
tonight mainly for areas along and south of an Eagle Pass to San
Antonio to Giddings line. The main severe weather threats would be
strong winds and large hail.

There is a Marginal to Slight risk (Level 1 to 2 out of 4) for
heavy rainfall resulting in potential flooding through tonight
from the Interstate 35 corridor eastward through the Coastal
Plains. A Flood Watch is in effect until Noon Thursday for areas
east of the Interstate 35 and Interstate 37 corridors.

Areas of fog will develop once again tonight and could become
locally dense. The best chances for Sense fog will be in the Hill
Country and northern Austin Metro Area.
