The main punch of this winter storm system has moved past this
portion of the state. Winds will remain windy and gusty through
the evening, with some residual blowing dust still hanging in the
air through sunset, but conditions have improved, and will

Cooler weather and strong west winds are expected again on
Thursday as a winter storm brings light mountain snow
accumulations and scattered showers. A quieter weather pattern
will begin this weekend into next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Seasonably cool temperatures again today, but a brief warming
trend has begun as yesteryda's winter storm system has exited to
the east. West flow aloft at the base of the polar jet will drive
Wednesday's benign weather pattern. We'll warm back up much closer
to normal for early January. Lowland highs return to the upper
50's under sunny skies and breezy west winds 10 to 15 mph.

Our next impactful winter storm system will arrive on Thursday.
120-knot jet streak currently over the Gulf of Alaska will dive
south along the Pacific coast on Thursday. A cold front will
accompany this system, arriving Thursday evening and cooling us
back down for Friday.

Deepening upper wave combined with strong mountain wave activity
and lee low development across the TX panhandle is a recipe for
very windy conditions again Thursday afternoon and evening.
Ensemble solutions currently track the jet streak just to our
south over northern Chihuahua, indicating the stronger winds will
exist there and across far west Texas and south-central New
Mexico. Sustained west winds of 35 to 45 mph are possible along
the International Border, with a few gusts to 60 mph along east-
facing slopes such as NE and Central El Paso, WSMR, and Mayhill.
Travel along I-10, US-54, and US 62/180 east of El Paso may become
hazardous for travel due to strong winds. A High Wind Watch has
been issued for most of those zones today. Blowing dust may also
accompany these winds ahead of the cold front, reducing visibility
for several hours along the International Border and far west
Texas.

As for precipitation chances, scattered showers will arrive with
the cold front bringing mountain snow accumulations and a wintry
mix along the desert floor. Latest forecast suggests 1-3 inches
of new snow for the high terrain of the Gila, Black Range, and
Sacramento Mountains. Lowland areas will likely see rain changing
to a wintry mix Thursday evening as temperatures fall. Timing for
lowland snow is worse for this evening than the last, considering
the cold front arrives in the late afternoon and WBZ heights will
have much further to fall before snow reaches the desert floors.
By the time it does, we may already be done with showers. Little
to no accumulations are expected for lowland zones.

At long last, our weather pattern settles down a bit this weekend
into next week as the subtropical high strengthens and pushes the
main storm track to our north. Ensemble members show good
confidence in dry weather next week, as well as warmer
temperatures.

VFR conditions for the next 24 hours. Our ceilings tonight and
Wednesday will be unlimited. Our winds tonight will be generally
light, but by late morning or early Wednesday afternoon we will
see some low end gusty winds. Those gusty winds will drop off
around sunset. Strong winds look to return to the region on
Thursday, so Wednesday will be a good time to prepare for strong
winds and blowing dust for Thursday afternoon.

Good day for burning on Wednesday given the recent precipitation
and cooler temperatures. Min RH 20-35% and west winds 10 to 15 mph
will create Fair smoke ventilation tomorrow afternoon. High winds
expected again Thursday along with light mountain snows. Cold
front shifting winds to the NW Thursday evening. Drier weather,
lighter winds, and Poor ventilation this weekend through much of
next week as the weather pattern settles down.
