AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Unsettled weather conditions continue today across the
northern portion of the region. Steadier precipitation will
continue across areas farther north of Trinidad into this afternoon,
before becoming more showery. A brief lull on Thursday will lead
into a more active pattern for Friday and this weekend with moderate
rain, mountain snow (over the Trinity Alps) and strong gusty winds.

.DISCUSSION..The well defined closed low has transitioned to an
open wave progressing east across Oregon toward Idaho early this
morning, while clipping the California border. During this
transition, PWAT values will remain anomalously high into this
afternoon as the westerly flow aloft continues to bring a weakening
moisture flux across the northern portion of the area and promoting
periods of moderate rainfall, mainly for Del Norte County...with a
brief uptick in precipitation bringing max hourly rain rates up to
0.40" this morning. Steadier precipitation will continue across
areas farther north of Trinidad into this afternoon, before becoming
more showery. Farther south into northern Mendocino County, trailing
light rain showers continue moving across the area. Snow levels
exceeding 5,000 feet will limit snowfall to the highest areas in the
Trinity horn, with Scott Mountain pass expecting a dusting of snow
today.

A 35-50 kt low level jet barrier brought a brief burst of strong
wind gusts overnight. Gusty SW winds up to 45 mph were observed
across the coastal headlands and exposed ridges in Del Norte County,
while gusty winds from 25 to 40 mph in Humboldt County were
recorded. Breezy conditions will remain across the area through this
afternoon, with gusty winds persisting in Del Norte County into this
evening.

Following a period of light ridging on Thursday, ensembles are
coming into agreement on a high amplitude upper trough swinging
multiple shortwaves into the PNW Friday through early next week,
forcing for a strong surface low pressure system. The first
shortwave is expected to evolve into a closed low off NW California
on Friday and swing toward OR/WA. A disorganized system of low level
jet streaks is predicted to develop upstream of the trough,
enhancing a strong SSE flow regime over the northern CA coast. The
orientation of the flow is favorable for higher rainfall rates along
windward slopes especially in Mendocino County. NBM probabilities
are predicting a high likelihood for 1.5 to 3" in the 72 hours of
Friday afternoon to early Monday morning for most of the CWA, with 3
to 4.5" in the windward facing terrain. Models are also hinting at a
more substantial downsloping effect for the coastal flats in and
around the Eureka area.

.AVIATION...The passage of a low pressure system to the north
has impacted KCEC and the other terminals to a lesser degree.
Conditions have been primed for stout winds with llws at KCEC, but
will diminish as the fast moving system departs PNW. Shower activity
continues through the afternoon as frontolysis and wrap around
moisture persist with the weakening thermal gradient. Expect flight
categories to prevail with MVFR conditions and periods of IFR at the
coastal terminals. KUKI has overcast skies with 300 to 400 foot
ceilings as of 13z but is expected to lift out to MVFR categories by
the afternoon. Otherwise, another more intense low will arrive with
high winds and rain by Friday late morning. This one will aim most
of the moisture below Cape Mendocino.

.MARINE...Gusty SSW winds continue through the morning, but will
diminish by the late afternoon as the exiting short wave has less
influence over area waters.  The next frontal system will be fast on
the heels of the departed low. Main forecast concern for the latter
portion of the week (Thu and Fri) will be gales and potential for
brief storm force gusts. Right now the gales and storm force gusts
look to occur over the outer waters. The usual wind prone locations,
like around Cape Mendocino, will probably have gales, but overall
coverage for the inner waters is uncertain. A third system will
likely bring another round of strong winds and elevated seas over
the weekend. A series of westerly swells will spread into the waters
through the week and this weekend.
