.SYNOPSIS...Widespread light to locally moderate precip sweeps
through this afternoon with a cold front. Strong southerly winds
develop Tuesday afternoon and evening as the next storm approaches.
Steady rain is forecast Wednesday into next weekend. Heavy snow is
possible in NE Trinity Wednesday morning.

.DISCUSSION...Presently the passage of a defined cold front
will usher in unsettle wintry weather at higher elevations.
Widespread light to locally moderate rainfall and snow for the
interior mountains are a likely result of the tropospheric fold
associated with this cold front. Also to be expected on the backside
of this front is the possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon and
tonight along the northern Humboldt and Del Norte coastlines. Total
rainfall today will range from 1-2 inches, locally higher, in Del
Norte and northern Humboldt counties to 0.25-0.75 in southern
Humboldt, much of Trinity, and northern Mendocino counties, and a
trace to a quarter inch in southern Mendocino, Lake, and eastern
Trinity counties. Snow levels are forecast to drop from about 7k ft
to 3k ft this evening as this feature sweeps overhead...however by
the time the coldest air moves in precipitation looks light,
showery, and disorganized. In any case, snow is possible down into
the 2500-3000 ft range tonight, primarily in interior Humboldt and
Del Norte. Zonal flow persists through Monday, supporting the
ongoing potential for light rain and snow showers in Del Norte and
Humboldt counties through Monday night, with snow levels likely
persisting around 3k ft.
A significantly more potent storm system is forecast to impact the
region mid week. Ensemble cluster guidance has finally consolidated
on the general pattern, with all clusters depicting an atmospheric
river developing Tuesday and parking itself over NWRN CA Tuesday
night through late in the week, possibly into the weekend. This will
bring a prolonged period of moderate rainfall with the threat of
small stream and urban flooding, and potentially even main stem
river concerns. Around 2 to 4 inches are likely each day Wed through
Fri in Del Norte, Humboldt, southern Trinity, and northern
Mendocino, with locally higher amounts expected in the King Range
and mountains of Del Norte. Plus, the initial front is forecast to
bring a tight pressure gradient to the coastal counties with very
strong southerly wind gusts Tuesday evening. Sustained winds over 45
mph with gusts of 60 to 70 mph are possible on exposed ridges,
coastal headlands, and portions of the coastal plain in Humboldt and
Del Norte counties, and a High Wind Watch has been issued for these
areas.
Meanwhile, cold air may get trapped in Trinity county on Tuesday
night and Wednesday morning as this system approaches, which may
allow for a period of heavy snow in the northeastern portions of
Trinity county before warmer air can move in. This looks most likely
east of the Alps and around Trinity Lake, where there is a chance
for a few inches down nearly to lake level, as well as over Buckhorn
Summit and Oregon Mtn...and possibly over a foot on portions of
Highway 3 up at Scott Mtn Pass. This could impact travel in and out
of Weaverville Wednesday morning. /TDJ /EYS

.AVIATION...A front has moved through early this afternoon, bringing
rain and MVFR to IFR conditions at the terminals. Conditions are
expected to improve periodically as the front moves out and steady
rain is replaced with rain showers. Conditions could swing between
VFR and MVFR or IFR as these showers move in, and rain could be
moderate to heavy at times, especially for Humboldt and Del Norte
Counties. There is a chance for thunderstorms as well for CEC this
evening and overnight. Gusty northwesterly winds are forecast this
evening at all the terminals behind this front, which are expected
to diminish overnight into Monday morning. JB

.MARINE...Northwesterly winds have increased behind a front that has
moved through. These could bring gusts up to 25 kts and are forecast
to diminish overnight into Monday morning. A large mid-period swell
is forecast to fill in this evening into Monday morning, peaking
around 16-18 ft at 13 seconds. This will diminish into Tuesday, but
significant wave heights are forecast to remain above 10 ft.
A significant system arrives to the area Tuesday afternoon. Southerly
wind gusts are forecast to quickly increase to 45-65 kts. The
highest winds will be found in the northern outer waters Tuesday
afternoon, while the southern inner waters may only see gales up to
45 kts. Hazardous seas will be associated with these strong winds,
with significant wave heights peaking up to 20-25 ft north of Cape
Mendocino and 15-20 ft south of the Cape. These winds will diminish
behind the initial system to 20-25 kt peak gusts. An uptick of wind
again is forecast late week, with gales possible once again. JB
